General Knowledge
XVI century is the heyday of English culture
England became powerful kingdom, it was respected by
   the other countries.
There were many reforms in the country. They helped to
improve the situation in the Church, with nobles and
   with trade.
The most important Kings & Queens of Tudors are:
1. Henry VII
2. Henry VIII
3. Queen Elizabeth I
What is the culture?
What do we mean when we speak about the
                   culture?
The Culture consists of several parts. They are:
 art
 writing
 science
Art consists of several parts too. We know they are :
painting
Architecture
Sculpture
theater
music
Architecture
Construction of castles and monasteries was in the
past. Those buildings were replaced by secular
 architecture.
We can see the elements of the Renaissance style
in the reign of Henry VII by the example of Henry
 VII Chapel at Westminster Abbey.
The interior still belongs to the Gothic style, but at
the same time, in the patterns already seen classic
motifs that will be characteristic of the
 Renaissance.
At the Elizabeth’s time English landscape park with
their free planning began to spread. But in
Painting
Hans Holbein the younger combined
features of the Italian and Northern
 Renaissance.
His works were done in the genre of
 the portrait
He is unequaled in composition, in
 richness and purity of style.
The most significant achievement of the
 Elizabethan paintings are miniatures.
New influences of realistic art are combined with
 expressive silhouette and bright colors
The most famous miniaturists were Nicholas
 Hilliard and Isaac Oliver.
Sculpture
In England sculpture, especially the monumental,
strongly reflects the influence of the Italian school.
In the first half of the XVI century only the Italians
worked with sculpture and in the second half - only
 the Germans and Dutch.
Torridzhani Pietro (1470 - 1528) created the
monument to King Henry VII and his wife Elizabeth
 of York at Westminster Abbey.
There were also several English famous sculptors,
because there were a tradition to transmit the image
 of ancestors to descendants
Literature
Feature of English culture was the lack of a common
language. Upper class (descendants of the Normans)
spoke French, and official language of the Church was
 Latin.
Literature of England, certainly, is influenced by
 other countries.
The major representatives of the English Renaissance
literature: W. Shakespeare, E. Spenser (The Faerie
 Queen, Prothalamion, etc.)
Theater
Appearance of many theatres
Great number of spectators
Independence of theatre
Conditions for Shakespeare
«Hamlet», «Othello»
Ben Johnson
Music
English Renaissance music kept in touch with
continental developments far more than visual art.
The most leading English composers: Thomas Tallis
 (sacred music; «Remember Not, O Lord God», «Hear
The Voice And Prayer», etc.) Thomas Morley
(secular music; «My bonny lass she smileth», «Now is
 the month of maying», etc.)
Conclusion
All branches of art were developed
The level of culture was high
New types of buildings were spread, even in poorest
 regions
The portraits of the Tudors are still popular today
The Cathedrals and castles of that time are probably
 better than XXI century buildings
The plays of Shakespeare are the best the plays even today
Expression Renaissance turned into a metaphor for
 cultural prosperity
The interest in history
