3. IDENTIFICATIONOFTHENEED
INTROIntroduction
On this page I will identify a need for a new jewelry
storage by giving pointing out the current issues
with jewelry, I will also conduct a questionnaire and
create a mind map to determine my design brief
which substantially give me an outline of my final
product.
Design Brief
For my final product I will design as well as manufacture a
unique and ergonomic storage unit. This will be mainly targeting
girls aged around 20-35. Most importantly my design should
also protect the content placed on or placed inside and hold at
least 20 pieces of jewelry. As well as this, my product should
also feel luxurious and convenient to use. Lastly I would my
design should be durable enough to withstand small drops.
Evidence of the problem
At least once in our lifetime we had
lost a piece of jewelry or small
accessories that are important to
us. The main reason for this is that
we tend to randomly clutter our
belongings around the house. This
is a common problem for me and
many other teenagers around the
world . Below is an example of an a
typical desk of a teenager. As seen
below, all the jewelry and
accessories have been jumbled up
together which makes it very hard
to find specific items, hence this
makes my storage an ideal product
for teenagers. To find out additional
information on what my target user
may demand I conducted a small
survey asking 20 teenagers of each
gender aged 15 to 25...
Questionnaire Analysis
Looking at my questionnaire supported my idea that a jewelry storage would be highly desirable.
From the questionnaire I can also tell that jewelry storages are mostly demanded for woman and girls. By looking at the questionnaire I can also
conclude that my design will be mainly designed to place it in bathrooms. By learning from this questionnaire I can now start my design brief…
Product Idea
For the past 100 years jewelry has become an
obligatory item for women and men to wear.
Although they generally tend to be expensive and
important to us they often get misplaced or even
lost due to their small size.
Through my own experience and those of my
friends I have decided to make a jewelry storage to
prevent this from happening.
Also, despite the amount of existing jewelry
storages, not all compliment the environment it is
in. An example for this is the lack of capacity of
some of the storages. However, In order to make
the best and most suitable storage unit for my user
I will research my market thoroughly.
Questionnaire
To further justify a need for a jewelry storage I
conducted a questionnaire to investigate the
existing issues with jewelry storages and discover
which ones are the most significant. The final aim
for this research is to apply what I’ve learned into
the storage to create the best possible and

Initial Specification

On this page I have conducted a research on plastics. As there are
2 types that differentiate some plastics from one another I’ve
decided to make two tables; one on thermoplastics (left table), the

Thermoplastics are denoting substances that become plastic when heating and harden on
cooling and are able to repeat these processes. Thermosetting plastics are denoting
substances that set permanently when heated.

Glue gun is a type
of thermoplastic

Glue guns can be extremely useful for
constructing models because the glue will dry
within seconds. However, it is not that
commonly used for actual products since the
adhesive doesn’t hold materials together well.
Masking Tape
Masking tape is a type of tape made out of thin paper and a
pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is most commonly used in
painting to mask off areas that shouldn’t be painted.
So if I were to paint my product I could use masking tape to
cover undesirable areas.
Solvent Cement
(dichloromethane)
Dichloromethane is mostly
used by dissolving a hard
surface of a plastic to another.
When using solvent cement
the adhesive may give off
poisonous fumes so I have to
work in a ventilated area.

9. RESEARCH:JOINTS
Introduction
Joints are joining methods often used by designers; while some
joints are very strong and effective some may need additional help
from adhesives (see page 6) to keep the pieces in shape.
(Above) This simple joining method is called the butt joint and is
extremely simple to manufacture but also one of the weakest joints.
Most designers use this to make picture frames, hence it isn’t satisfy
my design brief.
(Above) This joining method shown above is known as the mitre joint.
Most products which use the mitre joints are simple boxes and
picture frames.
(Above) This joint shown above is known as the the halving joint (the
picture above shows one of many halving joints). This joint is made
by, as the name suggests, having the pieces of wood using a saw or
a chisel. It is then usually strengthened by using a dowel
(Above) This simple joining method is
extremely simple but is also the weakest.
Most designers use this to make picture
frame, hence it isn’t a joint I am going to
use to make my jewelry storage.
(Right) This joint is very easy to make
and is very effective. This joint consists of
drilling holes in sections of the wood and
then joining them with dowel pegs (which
is why we call this dowel joint). It is
mostly used to make flat pack furniture.
(Left) The Lap joint can be very useful.
Although it is moderate in terms of
strength it is relatively appealing.
This joint is often used in furniture such
as tables and beds.
(Right) This joint is the strongest joint
shown on this page, the reason being the
amount of surface area that can be used
to glue the 2 pieces together. In addition
to that the joining method also looks very
appealing in comparison to the butt joint.

11. MANUFACTURINGPROCESSES
I will be using the CAD program
Spaceclaim a lot since it will give me a
preview of how my product will look like
when manufactured and help me
identify small problems that I might
have.
Using this CAD software ideas can be
changed and optimized quickly and
easily. Spaceclaim is also compatible
with the 3D printer.

This machine however is not always perfect
since it can cause some plastics to crack (such
as acrylic). This machine can be utilised using
the holes for screws or for dowels.
The sizes of the drill heads can also be changed.

The sand belt is an ideal tool to use as a
designer.
Not only does it remove excess materials but
also can make surfaces smoother. Utilising the
sand belt I could also use it to round of any
sharp edges. However, If there is only a small
area to remove sand paper would be more
appropriate and accurate

12. RESEARCH:ERGONOMICS&SIZES
Introduction
In order to start thinking about the appearance of my design I have conducted a
small research on the jewelry in my own household and took an average of the
sizes to be get an idea of how big the storage should be. In addition to this I will
consider the prices of these pieces of jewelry in order to determine how the
jewelry should be showcased.
I will also measure the dimensions of the sink (the place where my design should
be placed) in my house to find a suitable size for the storage.
The first necklace I’ve measured
had the length of 290mm and height
of 30mm.
The earrings that come with the
necklace has a dimension of
15x30mm
The second item I’ve
measured is a necklace
with the dimension of
20x30mm (which is
fairly similar to the one
measured previously)
What are ergonomics and why are
they important?
Ergonomics is the scientific study of people interacting with certain products. By doing
so scientists are able to reduce stress and eliminate injuries. Professional designers
like myself also use the basics of ergonomics; such as gathering the data of the
different heights and sizes of possible target users, then, applying the set of data into
my design.
Both these bracelets have a diameter of
80mm, however, as seen above the
bracelet on the left reminded me that I
may want to consider to make the
storage unit suitable for little beads (so
that they wont get scratched and
damaged).
The 2 types of ergonomics that I think are the most important for this project are hand and eye
ergonomics. If, for example, the product is too short the user would have to bend down to access
their jewelry (this could cause back and neck injury). On the other hand, if the product is too tall
people may have to stand up to access their jewelry, since my jewelry storage must be placed on a
table this has to be.

Here I have measured the sizes of a possible table my
jewelry storage may be placed on.
The measurements are the following:
H= 1270mm l= 711mm w= 406mm
As the surface area on the table is fairly little my product
should have some sort of feature which makes it less slippery
so that it is less likely to tip over.
In addition to this it is important to make my product strong
enough so that the items inside would stay safe after a small
fall.
These rings have a diameter of
13mm and has a gem stuck on it.
Knowing that they are very
valuable I should consider making
my product safe (for example
storing it in a box of some sort)
and/or design a secret section to
hide special valuables

Now that I know the
importance of

average sizes of most
jewelry types I can now
start looking at existing
products and evaluate
them.

jewelry I think the most
sensible thing to do is
creating a storage that
can store up to 25
pieces of jewelry (I will
decide on the
configurations later on
when developing a
product).
To see how many pieces of jewelry my product should be
able to store I have asked 25 different girls in my year
(from ages 15 to 17) to tell me how many pieces of jewelry
they have in their household. The range was between 12 to
31 so I thought that the most sensible storage must be able
to hold at least 25 pieces of jewelry.

13. FINALSPECIFICATION
On this page I have taken all the research concerning materials in account to produce a final specification that I will have to follow when designing and manufacturing process. Here
are the specifications that have to be satisfied:

After conducting research I can conclude that:
Materials
 Wood may be the best material I could use to manufacture my product. Although it may be costly, the durability and strength is very high which ensures that the jewelry storage
will protect the items within.
Manufacturing
 From the research I have conducted into manufacturing process has taught me a lot about how to operate and use a lot of the machinery which can be used to enhance my
work. The programs Spaceclaim and 2D design will be the most useful I think because creating my design on those software's would be both quick and precise since the
measurements can be inserted in the computer. During my development stage I would also want to combine multiple materials such as wood and plastic so that they will
enhance the aesthetics of the product.
Size
 My product must be able to store at least 25 pieces of jewelry
In conclusion my designs should follow all these design specifications in order to become a successful design. To ensure that my designs will follow these specifications I will put all
my designs against my specifications as well as giving it a rating.
I will also refer to my specifications at the end of the manufacturing process.
Next I will start researching existing products to develop ideas which I can implement on my designs which I will produce right after the research on existing products.

On this page I have conducted a research on existing products which are already available in the market. Looking at these products I can then evaluate their advantages and disadvantages
(concerning the design, size, ergonomics etc.). By doing so, this research will make me come up with possible dimensions that I may implement on my product as well as coming up with
techniques I could apply to my final piece.

16. MOODBOARD

On this page I have done quick 20 minute
sketches to generate ideas for designs.

18. DESIGNPAGE1
Element
Developing from my mood board I have decided to create a
storage unit inspired by the renowned brand; Element. Its
simplicity had inspired me to come up with a feature being
able to rotate, making my design stand out from all the
others. I first started off by creating a simple cylindrical
shape. To continue my development, I had to choose how I
would store the jewelry in order to make it able to store as
much as possible. I then thought that the most efficient way
of storing would be by using (vertical) length of the cylinder
as an advantage and adding drawers to make the storage
neater (see fig. 2.1)

To continue developing I have conducted a
small research on the possible space the
jewelry may occupy. Working from this data
I was able to tell the precise, minimum
length of my drawer and the storage unit
itself. (see fig 2.2)
Materials
I have decided for a wood called Oak.
This is because Oak wood is very
durable as they are a type of
hardwood. Also, due to its structure it
can make my product look ‘worth
more’ and luxurious. . Despite that,
Oak is also not too expensive in
Thailand making it an ideal material to
work with.
In conclusion I think that this
design has big potential to
appear in modern-day desks.
It allows a range of jewelry to
be stored as it fulfills the
design brief.
Ergonomics & Safety
In order to make my product provide the best
comfort possible as well as avoiding stress and
injuries I have considered 2 major points I will
follow when manufacturing this product:
 keeping the edges round- This will reduce the
risk of the user getting hurt
 Giving the product a component which
increases the friction between my design and the
floor (to decrease risk of tipping the product over
and damaging the items inside)
Drawers
For the drawers will be made out of the same material the body is mad out of.
The drawer will consist out of 3 parts: front, back and a ‘half pipe-like’ structure
which acts as the sides and bottom of a normal drawer. My drawer will
additionally have support from runners (attached on the sides and concealed by
the inner body) and a drawer stop which prevents jewelry to fall out.

19. DESIGNPAGE2
This is a simple jewelry box I have created. It is extremely
simple and consists out of 4 different components (an outer
body to protect the contents, and 3 inner sections that can be
taken apart to store multiple pieces of jewelry.
Manufacturing
In order to store my jewelry in the most efficient way, I have
decided to produce the product in 3 separate parts; an outer
case and two inner sections (works like a drawer) which are
used to store the jewelry. (see fig. 2.3)
Materials
Unlike my first design I have decided for the wood; Pine since it is
has an elegant texture whilst being durable at the same time.
Conclusion
In conclusion, although this design has a nice idea to it
(using lift able sections rather than basic drawers) it hasn’t
been rated as high as the previous one due to its simplicity.
In addition to this, many variants similar to this design are
already on the market.
Ergonomics & Safety
In order to make my product provide the best comfort possible as well
as avoiding stress and injuries I have considered 3 major points I will
follow when manufacturing this product:
 keeping the edges round- This will reduce the risk of the user
getting hurt
 the product should be
strong enough to support
and protect the loads
involved.
 The lid must be able to be
locked when closed, this
will prevent damage coming
from the surrounding.

20. Pyramid
I used the idea of the Egyptian's pyramid to help me
produce a jewelry storage that comes in 5 parts (see
fig. 3.1). Four of the parts will be held together by
joints while a lid is used to protect and conceal the
jewelry hidden inside.
Materials
Just like the first design I have
decided for a wood called Oak. Not
only is it durable but also resembles
the colours of the pyramid itself. On
top of that, Oak is also not too
expensive in Thailand making it an
ideal material to work with.
I don’t think this design is suitable since it barely
fallows my design brief.
The main reasons why I decided not to manufacture
this product is because it is not safe for the user, in
addition to this it was also not well thought through
since accessing this jewelry storage the user would
have to bend down which can cause back injuries
(see fig. 3.2)

21. Treasure chest
I used the idea of a simple treasure chest to come up with a
secretive jewelry box.
The design takes the shape of a cylinder (like in the 1st
design)
Materials
Just like my second design I went
with the wood called mahogany.
It makes both my design look elegant
as well as giving it a ‘treasure chest
like’ look (see fig. 4.1).
In conclusion I don’t think this design has the potential
to be used because it appears to be weak. Although
the idea with the padlock and the handle are relatively
nice, it appears to be more like a child’s toy than
something a teenager would be using.

22. Narnia
This design was inspired by the first Narnia movie in the
trilogy where the girl enters the magic wardrobe.
Materials
To give it that ‘Narnia-look’ like the
wardrobe in the movies I intend to use
the wood teak.

Even though this design has scored very high, I will not
produce this due to the limit of time that I will get to
spend.

the doors to reveal the jewelry.

Introduction
To find the most suitable design that I will manufacture I have created a table pointing out why I chose to include the design in my design pages in the first place, as well as
comparing it to my design specification in order to see if all (or most) of the points have been met.
After doing so I can identify which design might be the most suitable for my target market.

Problem Explanation
Outer body
In the design page I have not mentioned how
the outer body will be constructed and what
tools has to be used to create it.
Rubber
In my research I have not mentioned where I
be able to buy rubber to create the legs.
Size
Although the amount of jewelry that can be
stored inside is good, I would want to reduce
the cost of producing the product by adjusting
the sizes of certain components such as the
outer body.
Drawer
I will also have to figure out how I would
construct the drawer since it was very unclear
the design page.

I also don’t know how to inside would have to

Introduction
On this page I have created the model of the design with the highest
rating. I have measured out each piece of cardboard using a ruler
and a cutting knife. I have also started thinking about add-ons I
could create to make my product even more luxurious and
convenient using my previous research on ergonomics (page 10).
…From that piece I
then created another
prototype with a ‘halo-
like’ ring entangling the
cylinder. By doing so I
thought of the idea of
making the halo ring
glow so that girls and
women can access the
storage at night as well
as in the morning.
Instead of using one
piece of cardboard to
produce the legs I
used 2 small pieces of
cardboard, folded
them and glued them
onto the outer
cylinder. These 2 legs
represent line bent
acrylic.

Conclusion
By making these models I have discovered a brief idea of the dimensions I will be using. By creating and developing the legs
for my design I have also decided to go for 3rd Idea. Now that I have I broad Idea of the externals I can now begin to create
the outer body as well as the internal components…

FDM Thermoplastic
By making a 3d printed miniature model of how my end product should look like, I’ve
found out that FDM Thermoplastics are extremely suitable for manufacturing my product.
This is because of its tough texture and its ability to shape into different type of objects
when heated. FDM Thermoplastics are also available in various colors which

Through the help of a convection oven in the workshop I was able to bend the acrylic into
a semi circle at 147 Celsius. However, after observing the finished product the material
felt ‘too weak’ and ‘fragile’ for me to reproduce hence I am most likely not to use this
material for the outer body.
Wood
In order to give my design its round, cylindrical shape I have conducted a small
investigation on how wood can be bent. In 2 of the methods I could choose whether to
use bendable wood (see picture above) or by using a steam. When choosing the
bendable wood I would have to glue layers of them together to increase the durability of
my storage unit.
If I would choose to bend wood with steam I could use a slightly thicker wood such as
teak.

Conclusion
In conclusion I think using flexible plywood would be the best option for this product. I have decided not to use the other 4 methods as most of them don’t meet my design brief of
being luxurious, on top of that, materials such as FDM thermoplastic and acrylic may be too light (in weight) to be suitable for my design. The reason for me to select a material
with a slightly heavier weight is because I intent to prevent accidental tipping over (of my product) and destroying objects inside of my jewelry storage.
Introduction
On this page I have made models and tested out different materials which would be suitable for the body of my design.
In order to find the best material to use I have made small models for 3 different materials (FDM Thermoplastic, Acrylic
and wood). I will make a total of 2 development pages in order to make the best decision, later I make a choice between
the 2 final methods along with a brief analysis.

In fig. 8.1 I have tried hollowing leftover logs using fire to
burn down the middle section of wood blocks (In Laos) that
should represent the log itself and sanded down the inside
to smoothen it, giving it a more circular shape (see fig.
8.1).

Another possible way of creating the
cylinder shape I thought would be cutting
out wood pieces (as shown on fig. 8.3)
and then later gluing them together
using Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA glue) in
order to create loops. Using the loops
made I can then glue them together to

Conclusion
In conclusion I still think using flexible plywood would be the best
option for this product. I didn’t choose hollowing the log using
fire, this is because the workshop doesn’t have the required
items to do this task in comparison to the furniture manufacturer
in Laos. I also decided not to use the technique of gluing
separate wood pieces together such as the manufacturing
process will take a long time. In addition to this the technique
doesn’t satisfy my design brief of not using glue.
Introduction
In this section I have made models for my drawers in order to adjust the sizes further
and get final dimensions that will be implemented in my final design.

On this page I started developing my drawers
When developing my drawer I started
creating a Spaceclaim drawing on my
idea which I later got to 3D print and test
out.
However when I first printed off my
drawer I came across some problems
regarding my design (see on the right)
On my second attempt I gave it the ‘U’ shape I wanted.
I have also thought of dividing the drawer in 4 sections (a section each for earrings, rings,
bracelets and necklaces.

I decided to manufacture my drawers using
Spaceclaim since I thought it would be the easiest
way, so that I would not go over the time limit I would
have when manufacturing. Also, from my
development for the outer body I have noticed that it
wont be easy to create cylindrical shapes and would
be even harder if I were to produce small cylindrical
components.
Here I have produced a detailed 3D
printed model of my product using
the 3D printer
Outer body
As shown above I have used the program Keyshot to add colours and textures to the
design I have created on Spaceclaim. Using these models I can choose which one is
the most suitable for my product.
For the manufacturing process I will choose the white and/or grey because I thought It
would look the nicest.
However I would want the user choose the colour or colours for themselves to make it
more personal.
Conclusion
In conclusion this page shows a clear explanation on how I have to manufacture my drawer.
By producing the drawers on Spaceclaim it is evident that the range of colours and the methods
of personalizing the product is almost endless.
Now that I know how to manufacture my drawer I can now focus on how the interior should be
joined together and can later start manufacturing the final product…

First of all, after printing out the acrylic disks I then faced difficulties when attaching it to the inner cylinder.
Hence I decided to get completely rid of the on that connects all inner pieces together (like a skeleton) and forming the inner section of my design (see fig. 9.1). outer

Skeleton
As seen above I’ve created the ‘skeleton’ of my design
using a 5mm dowel and attached them to 4 areas of the
disk (using a electrical screwdriver and a classic
screwdriver). However this didn’t work as well since the
screw would often split the dowel. In addition to this the
weight of the disks would often break the dowels in half.
From the model (fig. 9.1) I
then created a new model
using a cuboid wood
beam with the dimensions
of 10mm x 10mm x
300mm.

in this model I am ready to
make the final skeletal

Introduction
On this page I started manufacturing the disks using the acrylic, the laser cutter and the CNC router. Using these disks I
will be able to develop the inner part of my product since the drawing on page 19 hasn’t clearly specified how the product
will be held together.
When manufacturing the cylinder I felt like the acrylic disk
may be too fragile so I decided to use MDF as a
substitute.
To do this I used the exact
same template for the acrylic
disk (on 2D design), but
instead used a CNC router
instead of the laser cutter.
Here I made a model on Spaceclaim that shows how
each part is assembled together as well as giving me a
clear view of how it should look like once constructed.
To begin with I have created 2 drawings shown on the left and on the right on how I would
want my model to look like.
The drawing on the left shows a x-ray vision of the inside of my product.
The drawing on the right shows all components I will need to produce the product (it shows
4 dowels, 2 cylinders with holes to fit the dowel and 2 cylinders with smaller holes to drill the
screw in).
However instead of using screws to attach the disk to the
wood beam I decided to print 2 disk like the one shown
below.
I later glued these 2
together so that the square
block can be fit in-between
and the beam can rest
inside.
Notice I added another disk in-between… this is assures that if
something were to fall on my product wouldn’t directly damage
the tubes in the inside.
Conclusion
After creating various models and improvements I can now plan
how I will mass manufacture this product.
For the manufacturing section I will create a detailed explanation
on how to spread out my time to manufacture most efficiently.

of unnecessary so I stuck to
the plan of just adding 1 disk in

30. FINAL RENDERED PRODUCT
On this page are final rendered images of the design I intend to manufacture. By
the end of the manufacturing process I would like to produce 2 of these products
but may not be able to since time restriction may limit my output.
Looking at the variety of designs it is evident that the colours and texture are
almost endless. When bringing this product to the market I would allow
consumers to customise the veneer on their own jewelry storage to make it
personal and luxurious.
Ideally, in mass production, I would want this product come pre assembled since
it would be most convenient for the buyer.
If I had more time for development I would make the legs better (perhaps creating
more versions) and developed my drawers further by making it smoother (such
as a roll out shelf).

chart I have also identified how much time I would have to spend o each
section.
Now that I have made a step by step plan I can finally begin my
manufacturing process.

34. MANUFACTURING
Introduction
In this section I will create an outline for my plan for manufacturing.
Below I have created a flowchart that shows the steps that I will follow
(including quality control). I have also estimated the time it will take for me to
complete a task by creating a gnat chart.
Before starting manufacturing I once again looked the finished Spaceclaim
drawing to give me the idea of how the product would have to be manufactured.
Before cutting the disks out on
the CNC router I had to make
sure that the drawings would fit
on the MDF board. I also had to
find the perfect fit for the disk on
the plank in order to decrease
wasted material.
After cutting out the disks I double checked the hole with the tube so I
would be sure it would fit.
Later when the sizes were correct I used PVA to stick the pieces together and wiped of excess glue
squeezed out. I then clamped it together so the disks wont slip apart and waited for a week…
While the CNC router was still cutting my disks I measured out
4 pieces (of length 240mm and a radius of 40mm) of pipes using
the band saw. Before I continue I had to make sure all the pipes
were the same size and used sand paper to make the pipes
equal to each other. (Note that this took me a total of 2 weeks)
The next week I came back I manufactured the legs using the previous template.
On the left and the bottom are the
models created in the development in
the previous slides. The picture on
the left has slots made for the beam
whilst the bottom picture shows the
disk that should be stuck on to the
other.
While the CNC router was cutting the legs I started cutting the wood beams into 4, 240mm
pieces using the scroll saw and the sanding belt to be more accurate.
Right after cutting the wood pieces I began sanding down the edges to ensure safety.

35. MANUFACTURING
When gathering all the separate components to my design I
able to slot them together
Here I glued the end of the pipe to the base of the disk
There was no need for clamping since the force of gravity
would hold the pieces together. I then left my product rest
for another week before creating the drawer.
On that day I wasn’t able to do anything else since printing 1
drawer took me 16 hours to print (I printed 2 on 2 machines).
The following week I then printed off 2 other drawers.
Conclusion
It was very unfortunate that I wasn’t able to cut out veneers to stick on my finished product.
Regarding the construction however the pieces fit into each other perfectly (smooth interface).
If I were to improve my product I would cut of veneers to see how It would look like with it. Nonetheless I
am proud of my design and can now ask girls to take the unit home to test it…
On the 5th week I started using the space claim
drawing to produce my 4 drawers. I chose the
colours grey (same as my development) and
white… However this can completely up to my
user.
When all the
printed drawers

36. EVALUATION
Introduction
In this section I will evaluate my product using the feedback from the users as well as my own
feedback. In addition to this I will compare my finished product with my final design specifications.

Surveying my target market
To see If my product successfully targeted the market I asked 30 different girls in my school ranging
from ages 14 to 18, 4 questions.
From my questionnaire it is evident that my design has been quite the
success since most of them were satisfied with product.
However, despite the positive comments in my questionnaire I wanted
more detailed comments and critics and have asked 3 possible users
to state the positive aspects of my design as well as the negatives.

37. EVALUATION
Introduction
On this page I will be evaluating my design against my final design
specification and will determine how effectively I have or haven’t
manufactured the product.
Specification points Has it been met?
“That the design has to be both attractive as well as serve its purpose of
holding jewelry”
The design has been successfully manufactured. Although I didn’t have enough time to experiment with
the veneers It was able to serve its purpose of holding jewelry.
“A suitable design and color has to be chosen to suit the target audience
(which in this case is 15-20 year-old girls)”
Since I didn’t have enough time to spend on my product I wasn’t able able try different colour
combinations.
“A suitable joining method that will hold together the design” The joining method is both very strong and durable, on top of that it doesn’t distract the overall
appearance of the product which is very good. In addition to this the joining method was fairly easy to
produce since most of the work was done on the computer and the CNC router.
“The right size has to be chosen so that the product doesn't’t end up to small
nor too big for the table it should be set on”
The size ended up being not too small, nor too big and was a perfect compliment to the desk it was set
on.
“The design should also be considered extremely carefully and should evoke
optimum comfort and reduce stress and injury (ergonomically friendly)”
Although I wasn’t able to manage to get the rotation it was still comfortable to use and appeared to
cause no problems regarding ergonomics.
“As well as providing comfort my design has to be durable enough to
withstand small falls and scratches without damaging the inside objects”
This specification point has not been followed yet since I didn’t manage to find time to test its safety out
if something were to damage it.

Conclusion
I believe that my design has been successfully solving the
problem of cluttered jewelry. In addition to this my storage unit
stores jewelry in a stylish and a unique way.
My storage unit can store up to 30 or perhaps even more
depending on the size of the jewelry.
Throughout this project I have learned a lot of things such as
how to use a range of machinery and developing my product
in order to satisfy my design specification.
On the next page I will show how I could improve this product
if I were to work on it again.
Having solved the problem I can say that I am satisfied with
this product.
