In the film Crash (2004), the director's use of internal conflict reveals that the main idea of the film, which is that some people stereotype others based
on their skin color or countries of origin without knowing them, which is dangerous because it can lead to violence and unrest. Haggis, the director,
uses the film to suggest that people should not judge anyone just because of their skin color or countries because it may cause people to hate each other.
In the beginning of the film we see how assumptions and stereotypes sting and cross boundaries in the lives of everyday citizens, as with the story of
Farhad. For example, there is a scene "Play the gehan in your own time, what you want?,i'm i making a...show more content...
Another example is from the scene when" he said he fix the lock come see how fix it is ,i'm not yaling i'm apsat ,i want his name give me his name
". In this scene it shows how the man was threatening to the blame on the man who is fixing the locks and he is saying that it is him without even
having any evidence that it is him. Clearly, the actions that the people have on the other different people are wrong and they are making assumptions
about people when they do not even know anything about them, which leads to have a wrong ideas about others and it leads to violence.
Continually the director uses the subplotsā€“ the stories within the storyā€“to show the hierarchy of oppression and privilege in America to show how
people think of others in a particular way in which they take people's dignity. The way people treat and look to others is really off and they go with
their thoughts to really far places and they imagine things that may not happen, in which they oppress another person.another scene "ā€“come on man

In the scene, it shows how the cop mistreats the boy just because he is black. This scene is related to the message because the cop kills a person who
did not do anything to him, he just thinks that he has gun but he is not sure about it, then

Crash Movie Review
In today's world, there are all kinds of stereotypical comments that people have to deal with. We take the concept of judging others for granted. If
you peak into your past and recall how many times you have assumed the outcome before weighing all the circumstances. There are a large
percentage of people that make quick opinions about people, events, and nationalities based on their little knowledge. In our society, assuming is a
common problem. The public has a problem of coming to a conclusion based on just the person's appearance. In your lifetime, you all must have
stereotyped a person knowingly or unknowingly. Stereotyping is considered to be a problem because it can lead to a conclusion based merely on a
person's appearance and surroundings. But these aspects should not matter when making an opinion about a person. The movie Crash shows the
authenticity of how people negatively stereotype each other's race and ethnicity. It also shows how people are racist towards each other because of their
different race. Stereotypes and mistrust are considered to be barriers that inhibit interracial relationships among people. Crash is a movie that shows
acts about racism and stereotypes within the United States. The first scene is the car crash involving Ria, Jennifer Esposito, and an Asian woman who
is not fluent in English. The Asian woman pronounces brake light as "blake light." At the same time, the woman is stereotyped because of her accent

One must never judge or discriminate a person based on their physical attributes. Prejudice and discrimination directed against someone of a different
race is known as racism. It is evident in the movie "Crash" directed by Paul Haggis, that people misconceive others due to judgement on their physical
traits. Throughout the movie, the characters living in Los Angeles face the challenges of fitting in a town populated by people of different colours.
The offenders are the "white" people whereas the victims are everyone else. The presence of racism is the main cause of every conflict that occurs in the
movie.
The majority of the racism involved in the movie is towards the negro population. They are perceived as thugs, thieves and...show more content...
If he speaks up, not only will he put in jail but he will also be humiliated if his colleagues find out. Racism isn't only towards the black population of
the town, it is demonstrated in many other ethnicities as well. Jean Cabot is a woman who believes her race, white, is superior than any other race
including black and hispanic. Jean is also very rude towards her maid Maria, and she gets angry at her over the littlest things. She is also convinced
that mexicans are gangsters so, when Daniel is changing the locks at her house, she demands that they get redone the next day, fearing that Daniel
will sell a copy of her house keys to one of his gangster friends. Farhad, a persian man with a strong accent, is also humiliated by a gun store owner
when he's trying to buy a gun.
The victims of racism realize that the behaviour towards them is unfair so they find ways to stand up for themselves. Cameron, with his marriage
life a stake, snaps at police officers when he is pulled over once again. Officer Tom Hansen saves Cameron's life otherwise, the other police officers
would've shot him. Cameron was once mistreated which shook his family life and created a gap between him and his wife therefore, he didn't want the
white people to take control of his life. Daniel, who was always mistaken for a gangster was finally fed up with it. As he was fixing the locks of

take notice and question and answer each other why. Them saying she sees two black men and assumes that they are gangsters, hoodlums or just
bad people. After you notice that, two seconds later Rick and Jean are being held at gun point and having their car stolen by Anthony and Peter. It
was pretty bizarre once you saw that happen but than start to get an idea of what the rest of the movie will be like. After that scene occurred, we
see Rick and Jean at home discussing what had just occurred in the previous scene with the holdup and theft of their car. They are filing a police

The Movie ' Crash ' Essay
The movie "Crash" illustrates the reality of the society in which we live. Race, stereotypes, oppression, and marginalization played a major part in the
reaction of the individuals in the movie, as it still exists today. Many will say that times have changed and things have become better since the days of
slavery, but I cannot agree that this statement is true. This learner was yet young during this era; however, my ancestors endured much agony and pain
for no particular reason. Today, minorities continue to deal with misinterpretation of the character without the opportunity to prove who they are
individually; regardless, this reader can identify with some of the stereotypes that minorities have been subjected to over the years. For example, Mrs.
Cabot, the district attorney's wife didn't trust the Mexican locksmith because of his appearance. Mrs. Cabot assumed that Daniel, the locksmith was a
thug since his head was shaved, tattoos, and pants sagging, referring to him as Amigo. Because of her cultural stereotype she asked her husband to have
the door locks changed because she felt he would give the keys to guys on the street to come back and rob them. Mrs. Cabot used Daniel as her
scapegoat for her anger towards Anthony and Peter, who robbed her earlier that night. Earlier in the movie, Mrs. Cabot exemplified fear and stereotype
of the men when she initially recognized them walking down the street. Anthony and Peter were appropriately dressed as college

The movie Crash is an interesting look at a variety of perspectives regarding the interaction and socialization of several different groups of people
and how sometimes their intentions can be misconstrued. In the movie, Officer Hansen proves to be a specially interesting character. Hansen is a
white male who seems to have grown up in a fairly typical environment and doesn't stand out from the normative views of an individual coming from
his social grouping. Unlike his partner Officer Ryan, Officer Hansen tries his best to set aside his differences with out groups and choose to treat
everyone equally from the beginning and one of the main opening conflicts in the film is geared towards Officer Hansen feeling that his partner is taking

Hansen's frame of mind changes slightly throughout the movie, and at times goes a bit back and forth up until the end. He originally goes from
making the assumption that everyone is on an equal playing field and treating it as if everyone generally has the same advantages and
disadvantages, but as events unfold he starts to sway in this belief. Seeing his partner, Officer Ryan, physically assault Christine (the wife in the
black couple that was pulled over early on) opened Hansen's eyes to racism and he seemed to have an awakening experience where he wanted to
help balance out the inequality in the system and help set things right. Unfortunately, even though he is a police officer, he soon discovers that his
ability to fix things and expose an obvious racist are not what he had first imagined. When he went to his superior officer to transfer away from his
racist partner and to distance himself from the situation, he was unpleasantly surprised by the results. His commanding officer, a black man, was not
willing to oust Officer Ryan, as it would make him look bad, and he felt that it was too hard for a black officer to achieve the rank he had achieved,
and therefore making an accusation against Officer Ryan would only damage his reputation and hurt them both in the long run. Hansen had to decide
if he was willing to stay with Ryan who was a blatant racist in his mind, or if he would admit to an embarrassing "flatulence

Impact Of Racism On The Movie ' Crash '
The movie Crash, demonstrates the lives of various individuals from divergent socioeconomic classes, who have life changing experiences in between
their conflicting prejudices and stereotypes. In this brief essay, I am going to discuss the impact racism and stereotyping have on the lives of some
main characters in the movie, considering the development of the storyline and the impact of various incidents that change their perspective towards
themselves and each other. Martin and Nakayama define racial identity as being based on physical characteristics, but they are also constructed in fluid
social contexts (pg. 105). The theme of multiculturalism has also made its influence on the major characters of the movie: a white American district
attorney and his wife constantly scared of "the other"; two African American thieves, a racist police officer who offends an African American TV
producer and harasses his wife, a nonā€“racist police officer, a Latino lock maker. The plot of the movie intersects all characters ' lives and their attitudes
towards each other, while making the audience question the validity of prejudices and racial stereotypes.
In the beginning of the film the white American district attorney and his wife were car jacked. The wife is terrified and the family gets their home
locks changed, but when she sees a "thug" (who in reality is an honest family man who just wants to make a living for his wife and daughter) is in
charge, she asks that her husband changes the

September 29, 2106 Crash Movie Essay Since the beginning of time, the world has been intolerant of people that are different or stand out. People
have an issue accepting others that have contrasting views, values, opinions, beliefs, and even appearances. Whether we like it or not, there is a little bit
racism in all of us, although it may not be as evident in one person as it is in another. In the 2004 film, Crash, race is portrayed as being an abnormality
that negatively sets one person apart from another, which to this day is a reoccurring issue. Racial discrimination is a prominent theme in this
particular screen play, that touches each character in a unique way. The movie demonstrates that although everyone is not exactly the same, we are all
connected to each other in one way or another. Each character has specific traits that make them the person they are, yet somehow each of eventually
become linked to one another despite their various races. One of the most impactful instances where individuals from two different races are linked
together is in scene five. Viewers could automatically be able to detect the immense racial barriers that were existent between various characters.
These racial barriers were evident through the actions of Officer Ryan towards Christine and Cameron. Christine and Cameron are an ideal example of
two innocent civilians who were at the wrong place at the wrong time. Officer

Paul Haggis directed an Oscar winning film in 2004 called "Crash", this movie basically talks about racism and the impact it has on the lives of
people in Los Angeles. This movie got a good response from the viewers, as it concentrated on some real harsh realities of racism and asked some
hard questions which are generally avoided in movies. This movie clearly promotes the a very delicate issue, and hence requires some detailed
assessment. I personally feel the movie was good and it portrayed some very common events of racism, I think "Crash" shows realities, but in a
notā€“soā€“realistic way. We do not see any detailed back story to any of the characters, but we know just enough about them as the director wants us
to know. They are a variety of races show in this movie; African Americans, Hispanics, a Persian family, and Asians. Every switch of a scene is done
to intersect the story of the previous scene with the next one, for example we are introduced to the Cabot family when two black men steal their car.
Similarly, the Persian family, who clearly is struggling to make in living as immigrants, hires the Hispanic locksmith. These are some of the lead
characters of this movie who are knotted together. This technique actually keeps the viewers engaged and captivated. All the main white characters in
"Crash" are shown to be socially and economically stable, meanwhile many, minorities characters are shown to have some kind of financial struggle
going on. Jean and Rick Cabot,

As Daniel explains the situation to Farhad, he is the subject of abuse as a consequence of Farhad's poor English skills and his own form of racism.
Exceedingly frustrated, Daniel throws the account in a rubbish bin and leaves. Again this displays how Daniel cannot help Farhad, with his door or
symbolically his aggravation. Rather than retaliating, Daniel avoids confrontation and walks out. Farhad's intent is made clear later when, after being
burgled, he searches through the dumpster before the camera focuses on Daniel's address on the account. A new scene opens with a slowā€“motion shot
of Daniel's van pulling into his driveway in the sideā€“mirror of Farhad's car, suggesting Farhad's preā€“meditated revenge. As Farhad alights from his car
the shot frames Farhad's gun, as Daniel unpacks his van in the background. This shot is juxtaposed by Lara inside, watching her dad out the window
beside their Christmas tree and nativity scene; a further indication of the religious and wholesome nature of the family. The pace of the film slows as
Lara dashes from the house screaming "He doesn't have it!" meaning his 'cloak of invincibility'. Just as Lara jumps into his arms, Farhad shoots and
the camera cuts to Daniel's distraught face. Later it is revealed she is unharmed as Farhad's own daughter has loaded the gun with blanks. Yet again,
instead of abusing Farhad, Daniel simply turns and takes his daughter and distraught wife inside, closing the door and ending the

Crash Reflection
Racism Reflection The movie I chose for this assignment was the Hollywood film Crash. I really enjoyed watching this movie even though I have
watched it previously before. Crash is the type of movie where you need to watch it more than once to understand the real meaning it is trying to
portray about racism. There are many acts of racism that is being shown in this movie in different ways through the many characters revealed. In this
movie I found there to be a lot of themes that took place, however the top three I felt was most important were stereotypes, oppression, and prejudice.
Stereotype is defined as the popular belief about a specific type of individual. In the movie there was a scene with the locksmith was fixing Jean's locks

When I look back on it now I can see that although I never exactly went through any racist situations face to face, my whole like in fact was being
judged based on my class. I did not realize this until after I watched the movie crash and we had the discussion of racism in our tutorial class. In a
way it is really sad to have to think about how everyone probably only accepted me at first because they knew I was like them. I think the most
hurtful and eye opening scene for me was near the end of the movie when the young officer Tom Hansen was giving the black man a drive up the
street when all of a sudden he thought he was reaching into his pocket to shoot him and he shot him first. This scene made me cry a lot and I felt
very disturbed after watching it. I think I felt this way mostly because throughout the whole movie they perceived this officer as one of the good
people until this very last scene where he kills an innocent man. At this point of the movie, this is where I lost hope because he was one of the only
people who had good morals and was doing his best to be a good person and then all of a sudden it changes. Reality hits you and everyone changes to
someone else.
I would not recommend this movie to a grade 8 class because I know that after they watch this movie they will not get the true meaning behind what it
is trying to show people. I myself did not understand the movie the first

Crash Movie Conflict
Intro
In this paper, I will highlighting the signs of conflict within the movie Crash. The beginning of the movie begins with two cars crashing into each
other. The storyline is structured around a group of characters who all come from backgrounds and their paths cross. These characters all have goals
they want to reach and sometimes in pursuit of their goals they conflict with one another.
Prospective, Transactive, and Retrospective Goals
A prospective goal is when you know what your goal is before you try to achieve it or take steps towards achieving it. One example is the shop
owner's daughter from the film when she purchased the gun. Her goal, from my viewpoint, was to put her father's mind at ease without having to
resort to violence. Her father was prone to getting upset easily, so she bought blanks to put into the gun so just in case he used it, he wouldn't actually
take a life.
A Transactive goal is when...show more content...
An example of this is when the cop pulled Terrence Howard and his wife over and touched her inappropriately. Additionally, because he was in a
higher position of power he was able to dominate the couple. Next, Integrative power assumes all parties in a dispute have power (Dunbar and
Abra 2010). I believe most of the movie itself is an example of integrative power. With Sandra Bullock, it was the assumption that anyone she
deemed dangerous had the power to come and steal from her again. With Ludacris, it was the thought that many parts of society were catered to the
deprivation of blacks. Also, with Terrence Howard it was the idea cops or people in higher positions of power could do what they want. To help my
argument, they all changed their mindsets in some way shape or form to the point where they weren't being dominated and tried to assert themselves in
some sort of power position, mainly it was to assert themselves as

Essay about Film Analysis: Crash
Over the span of the two days shown in the dramatic film, Crash, we are introduced to several contrasting characters in Los Angeles with differing
storylines: Two Africanā€“American criminals who possess many theories about the effects race and social class have on their community. A Persian
immigrant, who speaks limited English, and his intelligent, Americanized daughter. A privileged white
ā€“collar criminal lawyer and his spoiled wife. A
pair of Caucasian policemen, a young optimist and his bigoted partner who returns home every night to tend to his ill father. A black Hollywood

This uninterrupted progression builds tension ā€“ with the lack of editing, the shot is as close to "real time" as possible. For the majority of the scene,
there is no music playing and no ambient noise, emphasizing Jean's voice (which crescendos as the shot progresses, adding suspense). Her friend
tells Jean that she is busy and will call her back later, so Jean hangs up the phone. Jean then walks towards the staircase, and we hear a trembling
groan as she slips on the stairs' top step. We then only hear the sound of her tumbling and the phone crashing to the floor. The camera zooms to a close
up of the phone rocking back and forth, creaking on the hardwood, until it stops and there is silence ā€“ leaving us wondering what has happened to Jean.
The scene cuts to Jean crumpled at the bottom of the stairs, barely moving and moaning in pain. This shot is taken from a high angle, at the top of the
stairs, displaying just how low Joan has fallen ā€“ literally and figuratively. Her bigotry and selfishness leaves her physically injured and emotionally
exposed.
Haggis is extremely successful in evoking his message through a riveting story. Most people are not aware that racism can exist in several forms ā€“ curt
retorts, distancing movements, hate crimes, etc. He connects seven distinct plots, all dealing with different levels and types of racism to convey that
everyone holds is innately flawed.

The Opening Line Of The Movie Crash Essay
"It's the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We're
always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something." This quote,
spoken by Don Cheadle, is the opening line of the movie Crash. Not only does this powerful line tell the viewers where the movie is taking place,
but it also gives them a brief overview of what to expect from the movie. As citizens of this country, we are aware of the meltingā€“pot that the United
States has come to be. In large cities, such as New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, etc., and after major events occur, the various races and classes
seem to intermingle the most. This movie takes place over the course of a 36ā€“hourā€“period postā€“September 11th, and it recounts interconnected stories.
In Crash, Paul Haggis demonstrates the great deal of racism and sexism that are present in modernā€“day United States by exploring various personal
experiences of those who are both affecting and being effected by racial discrimination and degradation. Crash, directed by Paul Haggis, is a movie
that illustrates the connectedness of a variety of different members of social class, gender, and race who are living in Los Angeles. Among the main

his defense Anthony claims that with that kind of service, why should he tip? By doing this, Anthony is just contributing to the cycle of

sees the two black men her arm almost automatically clings to the side of her husband. They then pull out their firearms and approach the couple,
robbing them of their SUV at gunpoint. By acting the way they did they proved the woman correct in her assumption. In this scene Haggis shows

Crash is the movie that was released in 2004. This movie begins by saying "it is the sense of touch...we miss so much that we crash into each other,

everyday speech that the characters seem real and plausible after only a few words. His cast is uniformly strong; the actors sidestep cliches and make
their characters particular. For me, the strongest performance is by Matt Dillon, as the racist cop in anguish over his father. He makes an unnecessary

Theme Of The Movie Crash

  • 1. Theme Of The Movie Crash Merwa Sharhan ELA In the film Crash (2004), the director's use of internal conflict reveals that the main idea of the film, which is that some people stereotype others based on their skin color or countries of origin without knowing them, which is dangerous because it can lead to violence and unrest. Haggis, the director, uses the film to suggest that people should not judge anyone just because of their skin color or countries because it may cause people to hate each other. In the beginning of the film we see how assumptions and stereotypes sting and cross boundaries in the lives of everyday citizens, as with the story of Farhad. For example, there is a scene "Play the gehan in your own time, what you want?,i'm i making a...show more content... Another example is from the scene when" he said he fix the lock come see how fix it is ,i'm not yaling i'm apsat ,i want his name give me his name ". In this scene it shows how the man was threatening to the blame on the man who is fixing the locks and he is saying that it is him without even having any evidence that it is him. Clearly, the actions that the people have on the other different people are wrong and they are making assumptions about people when they do not even know anything about them, which leads to have a wrong ideas about others and it leads to violence. Continually the director uses the subplotsā€“ the stories within the storyā€“to show the hierarchy of oppression and privilege in America to show how people think of others in a particular way in which they take people's dignity. The way people treat and look to others is really off and they go with their thoughts to really far places and they imagine things that may not happen, in which they oppress another person.another scene "ā€“come on man keep driving i said i'm not laughing at you ...fine you want me to show you i will show you ,do you want to see what's in my hands i will show you" In the scene, it shows how the cop mistreats the boy just because he is black. This scene is related to the message because the cop kills a person who did not do anything to him, he just thinks that he has gun but he is not sure about it, then Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Crash Movie Review In today's world, there are all kinds of stereotypical comments that people have to deal with. We take the concept of judging others for granted. If you peak into your past and recall how many times you have assumed the outcome before weighing all the circumstances. There are a large percentage of people that make quick opinions about people, events, and nationalities based on their little knowledge. In our society, assuming is a common problem. The public has a problem of coming to a conclusion based on just the person's appearance. In your lifetime, you all must have stereotyped a person knowingly or unknowingly. Stereotyping is considered to be a problem because it can lead to a conclusion based merely on a person's appearance and surroundings. But these aspects should not matter when making an opinion about a person. The movie Crash shows the authenticity of how people negatively stereotype each other's race and ethnicity. It also shows how people are racist towards each other because of their different race. Stereotypes and mistrust are considered to be barriers that inhibit interracial relationships among people. Crash is a movie that shows acts about racism and stereotypes within the United States. The first scene is the car crash involving Ria, Jennifer Esposito, and an Asian woman who is not fluent in English. The Asian woman pronounces brake light as "blake light." At the same time, the woman is stereotyped because of her accent and also considered less Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Crash Movie Essay One must never judge or discriminate a person based on their physical attributes. Prejudice and discrimination directed against someone of a different race is known as racism. It is evident in the movie "Crash" directed by Paul Haggis, that people misconceive others due to judgement on their physical traits. Throughout the movie, the characters living in Los Angeles face the challenges of fitting in a town populated by people of different colours. The offenders are the "white" people whereas the victims are everyone else. The presence of racism is the main cause of every conflict that occurs in the movie. The majority of the racism involved in the movie is towards the negro population. They are perceived as thugs, thieves and...show more content... If he speaks up, not only will he put in jail but he will also be humiliated if his colleagues find out. Racism isn't only towards the black population of the town, it is demonstrated in many other ethnicities as well. Jean Cabot is a woman who believes her race, white, is superior than any other race including black and hispanic. Jean is also very rude towards her maid Maria, and she gets angry at her over the littlest things. She is also convinced that mexicans are gangsters so, when Daniel is changing the locks at her house, she demands that they get redone the next day, fearing that Daniel will sell a copy of her house keys to one of his gangster friends. Farhad, a persian man with a strong accent, is also humiliated by a gun store owner when he's trying to buy a gun. The victims of racism realize that the behaviour towards them is unfair so they find ways to stand up for themselves. Cameron, with his marriage life a stake, snaps at police officers when he is pulled over once again. Officer Tom Hansen saves Cameron's life otherwise, the other police officers would've shot him. Cameron was once mistreated which shook his family life and created a gap between him and his wife therefore, he didn't want the white people to take control of his life. Daniel, who was always mistaken for a gangster was finally fed up with it. As he was fixing the locks of Farhad's store, Farhad calls Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Summary and Overview on the Movie Crash Essay Crash "Collision of Absolute Bigotry" This movie Directed by Paul Haggis who also directed Academy Award Winning "Million Dollar Baby" and had also won an Academy Award for this movie as well puts a twisted story in this film. This movie is trying to symbolize what goes on in the world today in regards to racism and stereotypes. He tries to make a point on how societies view themselves and others in the world based on there ethnicities. This movie intertwines several different people's lives, all different races, with different types of beliefs. Such ethnicities include Caucasians, African Americans, Hispanics, Asians and Middle Eastern. This movie includes conflicts on both sides of the picture from cops and criminals as well...show more content... The ironic part of this being that Anthony and Peter are conversing of poverty and notice the way jean looks at them and gets closer to his husband. They're discussing on how people are viewed when taking the bus and also once they notice jean looking at them the way she is, they take notice and question and answer each other why. Them saying she sees two black men and assumes that they are gangsters, hoodlums or just bad people. After you notice that, two seconds later Rick and Jean are being held at gun point and having their car stolen by Anthony and Peter. It was pretty bizarre once you saw that happen but than start to get an idea of what the rest of the movie will be like. After that scene occurred, we see Rick and Jean at home discussing what had just occurred in the previous scene with the holdup and theft of their car. They are filing a police report. Rick is running for an election and is trying figure out a way with his advisors to avoid gaining bad publicity. He wants the African Americans vote and does not want to lose those that are on his side. By filing this police report after the incident that just occurred, he feels he put himself in a bad position in the election. Him and his advisors are trying to figure out what he should with the interview with the news reporters. As he's trying to figure out the right wording for the situation that occurred, Jean is watching the locksmith named Daniel played by Michael Pena, he is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. The Movie ' Crash ' Essay The movie "Crash" illustrates the reality of the society in which we live. Race, stereotypes, oppression, and marginalization played a major part in the reaction of the individuals in the movie, as it still exists today. Many will say that times have changed and things have become better since the days of slavery, but I cannot agree that this statement is true. This learner was yet young during this era; however, my ancestors endured much agony and pain for no particular reason. Today, minorities continue to deal with misinterpretation of the character without the opportunity to prove who they are individually; regardless, this reader can identify with some of the stereotypes that minorities have been subjected to over the years. For example, Mrs. Cabot, the district attorney's wife didn't trust the Mexican locksmith because of his appearance. Mrs. Cabot assumed that Daniel, the locksmith was a thug since his head was shaved, tattoos, and pants sagging, referring to him as Amigo. Because of her cultural stereotype she asked her husband to have the door locks changed because she felt he would give the keys to guys on the street to come back and rob them. Mrs. Cabot used Daniel as her scapegoat for her anger towards Anthony and Peter, who robbed her earlier that night. Earlier in the movie, Mrs. Cabot exemplified fear and stereotype of the men when she initially recognized them walking down the street. Anthony and Peter were appropriately dressed as college Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. The movie Crash is an interesting look at a variety of perspectives regarding the interaction and socialization of several different groups of people and how sometimes their intentions can be misconstrued. In the movie, Officer Hansen proves to be a specially interesting character. Hansen is a white male who seems to have grown up in a fairly typical environment and doesn't stand out from the normative views of an individual coming from his social grouping. Unlike his partner Officer Ryan, Officer Hansen tries his best to set aside his differences with out groups and choose to treat everyone equally from the beginning and one of the main opening conflicts in the film is geared towards Officer Hansen feeling that his partner is taking ...show more content... Hansen's frame of mind changes slightly throughout the movie, and at times goes a bit back and forth up until the end. He originally goes from making the assumption that everyone is on an equal playing field and treating it as if everyone generally has the same advantages and disadvantages, but as events unfold he starts to sway in this belief. Seeing his partner, Officer Ryan, physically assault Christine (the wife in the black couple that was pulled over early on) opened Hansen's eyes to racism and he seemed to have an awakening experience where he wanted to help balance out the inequality in the system and help set things right. Unfortunately, even though he is a police officer, he soon discovers that his ability to fix things and expose an obvious racist are not what he had first imagined. When he went to his superior officer to transfer away from his racist partner and to distance himself from the situation, he was unpleasantly surprised by the results. His commanding officer, a black man, was not willing to oust Officer Ryan, as it would make him look bad, and he felt that it was too hard for a black officer to achieve the rank he had achieved, and therefore making an accusation against Officer Ryan would only damage his reputation and hurt them both in the long run. Hansen had to decide if he was willing to stay with Ryan who was a blatant racist in his mind, or if he would admit to an embarrassing "flatulence Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Impact Of Racism On The Movie ' Crash ' The movie Crash, demonstrates the lives of various individuals from divergent socioeconomic classes, who have life changing experiences in between their conflicting prejudices and stereotypes. In this brief essay, I am going to discuss the impact racism and stereotyping have on the lives of some main characters in the movie, considering the development of the storyline and the impact of various incidents that change their perspective towards themselves and each other. Martin and Nakayama define racial identity as being based on physical characteristics, but they are also constructed in fluid social contexts (pg. 105). The theme of multiculturalism has also made its influence on the major characters of the movie: a white American district attorney and his wife constantly scared of "the other"; two African American thieves, a racist police officer who offends an African American TV producer and harasses his wife, a nonā€“racist police officer, a Latino lock maker. The plot of the movie intersects all characters ' lives and their attitudes towards each other, while making the audience question the validity of prejudices and racial stereotypes. In the beginning of the film the white American district attorney and his wife were car jacked. The wife is terrified and the family gets their home locks changed, but when she sees a "thug" (who in reality is an honest family man who just wants to make a living for his wife and daughter) is in charge, she asks that her husband changes the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Analysis Of The Movie ' Crash ' Essay Daniella Volpacchio Uddin Writing & Inquiry September 29, 2106 Crash Movie Essay Since the beginning of time, the world has been intolerant of people that are different or stand out. People have an issue accepting others that have contrasting views, values, opinions, beliefs, and even appearances. Whether we like it or not, there is a little bit racism in all of us, although it may not be as evident in one person as it is in another. In the 2004 film, Crash, race is portrayed as being an abnormality that negatively sets one person apart from another, which to this day is a reoccurring issue. Racial discrimination is a prominent theme in this particular screen play, that touches each character in a unique way. The movie demonstrates that although everyone is not exactly the same, we are all connected to each other in one way or another. Each character has specific traits that make them the person they are, yet somehow each of eventually become linked to one another despite their various races. One of the most impactful instances where individuals from two different races are linked together is in scene five. Viewers could automatically be able to detect the immense racial barriers that were existent between various characters. These racial barriers were evident through the actions of Officer Ryan towards Christine and Cameron. Christine and Cameron are an ideal example of two innocent civilians who were at the wrong place at the wrong time. Officer Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Movie Analysis : ' Crash ' Paul Haggis directed an Oscar winning film in 2004 called "Crash", this movie basically talks about racism and the impact it has on the lives of people in Los Angeles. This movie got a good response from the viewers, as it concentrated on some real harsh realities of racism and asked some hard questions which are generally avoided in movies. This movie clearly promotes the a very delicate issue, and hence requires some detailed assessment. I personally feel the movie was good and it portrayed some very common events of racism, I think "Crash" shows realities, but in a notā€“soā€“realistic way. We do not see any detailed back story to any of the characters, but we know just enough about them as the director wants us to know. They are a variety of races show in this movie; African Americans, Hispanics, a Persian family, and Asians. Every switch of a scene is done to intersect the story of the previous scene with the next one, for example we are introduced to the Cabot family when two black men steal their car. Similarly, the Persian family, who clearly is struggling to make in living as immigrants, hires the Hispanic locksmith. These are some of the lead characters of this movie who are knotted together. This technique actually keeps the viewers engaged and captivated. All the main white characters in "Crash" are shown to be socially and economically stable, meanwhile many, minorities characters are shown to have some kind of financial struggle going on. Who did you feel most empathy for in this film and why? Support your comments with close reference to the characters, incidents and filmic treatment in your answer. The film, Crash, exemplifies fear as a motivator for human behavior and displays that innately everyone is flawed. Our identities are determined by the choices we make and our reactions to others, regardless of class, ethnicity, culture or language. Through the use of an ironic script, symbolism and effective cinematography, Director, Paul Haggis, encourages us to empathize with characters such...show more content... As Daniel explains the situation to Farhad, he is the subject of abuse as a consequence of Farhad's poor English skills and his own form of racism. Exceedingly frustrated, Daniel throws the account in a rubbish bin and leaves. Again this displays how Daniel cannot help Farhad, with his door or symbolically his aggravation. Rather than retaliating, Daniel avoids confrontation and walks out. Farhad's intent is made clear later when, after being burgled, he searches through the dumpster before the camera focuses on Daniel's address on the account. A new scene opens with a slowā€“motion shot of Daniel's van pulling into his driveway in the sideā€“mirror of Farhad's car, suggesting Farhad's preā€“meditated revenge. As Farhad alights from his car the shot frames Farhad's gun, as Daniel unpacks his van in the background. This shot is juxtaposed by Lara inside, watching her dad out the window beside their Christmas tree and nativity scene; a further indication of the religious and wholesome nature of the family. The pace of the film slows as Lara dashes from the house screaming "He doesn't have it!" meaning his 'cloak of invincibility'. Just as Lara jumps into his arms, Farhad shoots and the camera cuts to Daniel's distraught face. Later it is revealed she is unharmed as Farhad's own daughter has loaded the gun with blanks. Yet again, instead of abusing Farhad, Daniel simply turns and takes his daughter and distraught wife inside, closing the door and ending the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Film Analysis Essay on Crash (2004) The movie "Crash" ā€“ from director and producer Paul Haggis ā€“ pictures one day in the lives of various characters in Los Angeles, all of them from different social and racial backgrounds but nevertheless connected and intertwined throughout the story. The movie's story is being told in a mostly chronological way, except that it puts one scene to the very beginning of the film and then cuts back to the day prior, indicated by the visual text "yesterday". In this first sequence, detectives Graham Waters and his partner Ria have been rearended when they arrive at a crime scene, leading to a fight between Hispanic Ria and the accident responsible, furious Chinese Kim Lee, involving raceā€“related insults towards each other. • 12. Crash Reflection Racism Reflection The movie I chose for this assignment was the Hollywood film Crash. I really enjoyed watching this movie even though I have watched it previously before. Crash is the type of movie where you need to watch it more than once to understand the real meaning it is trying to portray about racism. There are many acts of racism that is being shown in this movie in different ways through the many characters revealed. In this movie I found there to be a lot of themes that took place, however the top three I felt was most important were stereotypes, oppression, and prejudice. Stereotype is defined as the popular belief about a specific type of individual. In the movie there was a scene with the locksmith was fixing Jean's locks ...show more content... When I look back on it now I can see that although I never exactly went through any racist situations face to face, my whole like in fact was being judged based on my class. I did not realize this until after I watched the movie crash and we had the discussion of racism in our tutorial class. In a way it is really sad to have to think about how everyone probably only accepted me at first because they knew I was like them. I think the most hurtful and eye opening scene for me was near the end of the movie when the young officer Tom Hansen was giving the black man a drive up the street when all of a sudden he thought he was reaching into his pocket to shoot him and he shot him first. This scene made me cry a lot and I felt very disturbed after watching it. I think I felt this way mostly because throughout the whole movie they perceived this officer as one of the good people until this very last scene where he kills an innocent man. At this point of the movie, this is where I lost hope because he was one of the only people who had good morals and was doing his best to be a good person and then all of a sudden it changes. Reality hits you and everyone changes to someone else. I would not recommend this movie to a grade 8 class because I know that after they watch this movie they will not get the true meaning behind what it is trying to show people. I myself did not understand the movie the first Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Crash Movie Conflict Intro In this paper, I will highlighting the signs of conflict within the movie Crash. The beginning of the movie begins with two cars crashing into each other. The storyline is structured around a group of characters who all come from backgrounds and their paths cross. These characters all have goals they want to reach and sometimes in pursuit of their goals they conflict with one another. Prospective, Transactive, and Retrospective Goals A prospective goal is when you know what your goal is before you try to achieve it or take steps towards achieving it. One example is the shop owner's daughter from the film when she purchased the gun. Her goal, from my viewpoint, was to put her father's mind at ease without having to resort to violence. Her father was prone to getting upset easily, so she bought blanks to put into the gun so just in case he used it, he wouldn't actually take a life. A Transactive goal is when...show more content... An example of this is when the cop pulled Terrence Howard and his wife over and touched her inappropriately. Additionally, because he was in a higher position of power he was able to dominate the couple. Next, Integrative power assumes all parties in a dispute have power (Dunbar and Abra 2010). I believe most of the movie itself is an example of integrative power. With Sandra Bullock, it was the assumption that anyone she deemed dangerous had the power to come and steal from her again. With Ludacris, it was the thought that many parts of society were catered to the deprivation of blacks. Also, with Terrence Howard it was the idea cops or people in higher positions of power could do what they want. To help my argument, they all changed their mindsets in some way shape or form to the point where they weren't being dominated and tried to assert themselves in some sort of power position, mainly it was to assert themselves as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Essay about Film Analysis: Crash Over the span of the two days shown in the dramatic film, Crash, we are introduced to several contrasting characters in Los Angeles with differing storylines: Two Africanā€“American criminals who possess many theories about the effects race and social class have on their community. A Persian immigrant, who speaks limited English, and his intelligent, Americanized daughter. A privileged white ā€“collar criminal lawyer and his spoiled wife. A pair of Caucasian policemen, a young optimist and his bigoted partner who returns home every night to tend to his ill father. A black Hollywood director who's wife believes her husband is ashamed of his race. A Latino locksmith, preoccupied with protecting his young daughter from their crimeā€“ridden...show more content... This uninterrupted progression builds tension ā€“ with the lack of editing, the shot is as close to "real time" as possible. For the majority of the scene, there is no music playing and no ambient noise, emphasizing Jean's voice (which crescendos as the shot progresses, adding suspense). Her friend tells Jean that she is busy and will call her back later, so Jean hangs up the phone. Jean then walks towards the staircase, and we hear a trembling groan as she slips on the stairs' top step. We then only hear the sound of her tumbling and the phone crashing to the floor. The camera zooms to a close up of the phone rocking back and forth, creaking on the hardwood, until it stops and there is silence ā€“ leaving us wondering what has happened to Jean. The scene cuts to Jean crumpled at the bottom of the stairs, barely moving and moaning in pain. This shot is taken from a high angle, at the top of the stairs, displaying just how low Joan has fallen ā€“ literally and figuratively. Her bigotry and selfishness leaves her physically injured and emotionally exposed. Haggis is extremely successful in evoking his message through a riveting story. Most people are not aware that racism can exist in several forms ā€“ curt retorts, distancing movements, hate crimes, etc. He connects seven distinct plots, all dealing with different levels and types of racism to convey that everyone holds is innately flawed. • 15. The Opening Line Of The Movie Crash Essay "It's the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We're always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something." This quote, spoken by Don Cheadle, is the opening line of the movie Crash. Not only does this powerful line tell the viewers where the movie is taking place, but it also gives them a brief overview of what to expect from the movie. As citizens of this country, we are aware of the meltingā€“pot that the United States has come to be. In large cities, such as New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, etc., and after major events occur, the various races and classes seem to intermingle the most. This movie takes place over the course of a 36ā€“hourā€“period postā€“September 11th, and it recounts interconnected stories. In Crash, Paul Haggis demonstrates the great deal of racism and sexism that are present in modernā€“day United States by exploring various personal experiences of those who are both affecting and being effected by racial discrimination and degradation. Crash, directed by Paul Haggis, is a movie that illustrates the connectedness of a variety of different members of social class, gender, and race who are living in Los Angeles. Then Peter brings up the fact that their waitress was black. Anthony points out that just because she is black, does not mean that she fails to see in stereotypes. He argues that she did not serve them because she assumed they would not tip well. So Peter says, "Well how much did you tip her?" In his defense Anthony claims that with that kind of service, why should he tip? By doing this, Anthony is just contributing to the cycle of discrimination. She decides not to serve him like everyone else, so he does not tip her. She is then proven right in her assumption and the cycle continues. Then a white man and woman (the Los Angeles District Attorney and his wife) walk past them in the street, and as soon as the woman sees the two black men her arm almost automatically clings to the side of her husband. They then pull out their firearms and approach the couple, robbing them of their SUV at gunpoint. By acting the way they did they proved the woman correct in her assumption. In this scene Haggis shows only face shots so that each characters emotion is revealed by their face. The Los Angeles District Attorney's wife is freaking out at her husband because they have a Mexican locksmith changing their locks. • 19. Crash Movie Analysis Essay Crash" tells interlocking stories of whites, blacks, Latinos, Koreans, Iranians, cops and criminals, the rich and the poor, the powerful and powerless, all defined in one way or another by racism. All are victims of it, and all are guilty it. Sometimes, yes, they rise above it, although it is never that simple. Their negative impulses may be instinctive, their positive impulses may be dangerous, and who knows what the other person is thinking? The result is a movie of intense fascination; we understand quickly enough who the characters are and what their lives are like, but we have no idea how they will behave, because so much depends on accident. Most movies enact rituals; we know the form and watch for variations. "Crash" is a movie ...show more content... The district attorney's wife is so frightened by a street encounter that she has the locks changed, then assumes the locksmith will be back with his "homies" to attack them. The white cop can't get medical care for his dying father, and accuses a black woman at his HMO with taking advantage of preferential racial treatment. The Iranian can't understand what the locksmith is trying to tell him, freaks out, and buys a gun to protect himself. The gun dealer and the Iranian get into a shouting match. I make this sound almost like episodic TV, but Haggis writes with such directness and such a good ear for everyday speech that the characters seem real and plausible after only a few words. His cast is uniformly strong; the actors sidestep cliches and make their characters particular. For me, the strongest performance is by Matt Dillon, as the racist cop in anguish over his father. He makes an unnecessary traffic stop when he thinks he sees the black TV director and his lightā€“skinned wife doing something they really shouldn't be doing at the same time they're driving. True enough, but he wouldn't have stopped a black couple or a white couple. He humiliates the woman with an invasive body Get more content on HelpWriting.net
