• 2011 was the first BIG Event at KU
• National event, started in 1982 at Texas A&M University
• Volunteers: KU students, faculty and staff
• Job requests: Lawrence residents
• Why: To give back to the Lawrence community
• 500 volunteers in 2011; 2,000 volunteers in 2012
• About 70 job sites in 2011; almost 200 job sites in 2012

• Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13th
11. Check-In Process
• Step 1: Registration
- Get your job description, directions and supply list
- Return all signed waivers and participation forms
• Step 2: T-Shirts
- Each group member should pick up a Big Event T-
shirt to wear during their project
• Step 3: Supplies
- Give your supply list to a Big Event organizer
- Collect your supplies and take them to your
vehicle(s)
- If applicable, find other group members
12. More on T-shirts
• Every volunteer will receive a 2013 Big Event T-shirt
at check-in
• Wearing the shirt is required of every volunteer
• Why?
– The shirt identifies you as a Big Event volunteer
– This is a safety measure for the homeowner
– And for you!
13. Kickoff
• Kickoff celebration begins at 9:45 a.m. Saturday
• Get ready for the BIG Event!
• After registration and kickoff, groups will head to job
sites at 10 a.m.
• Arrive at job site shortly after 10 a.m.
14. Job Sites
• Things To Know:
– You are not expected to haul anything away
– Bag all yard clippings according to city
regulation – you’ll get this info Saturday
– Four hour time span; if job is not complete in 4
hours, please contact BIG Event rep
– You are only expected to complete jobs outlined
in your job description

• Things To Know:
– NO power tools
– If you have any questions, call BIG Event rep
– You are expected to provide transportation; let
us know if this isn’t possible for you
– Bring and drink lots of water
– Wear clothing appropriate for the job requested
– Forecast for Saturday: Mostly sunny, high of 58
16. Job Sites: Yard work
• Things To Know:
– We follow City of Lawrence regulations for yard
clippings, branches, etc.
– All yard waste goes in paper yard bags (NOT
plastic bags)
– Branches, etc. must fit in the yard bag; break
them into smaller pieces, if needed
– The City of Lawrence thanks you!
17. Check Out
• Please return to lot 90 after completing your job
• Return all supplies to Supplies Tent
• Complete BIG Event survey
• Return homeowner survey form
