Philosophy which every human person
should understand and learn because it
concerns us not only as social beings,
but as relational beings designed by the
Supreme Being or God Himself to create
and establish a meaningful encounter
and relationship with other fellow human
beings . . .)
THE HUMAN PERSON AND
INTERSUBJECTIVE HUMAN RELATIONS

2.What is the nature of
intersubjective human relations or
human encounter?
3.How do you characterize an
authentic, genuine and
intersubjective human relations?
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
20. TAO, ME AND YOU
PAKIKITUNGO SA KAPWA-TAO
THE HUMAN PERSON AS DESIGNED BY HIS
CREATOR TO RELATE TO OTHER FELLOW
BEINGS
. . . as the saying goes,”NO MAN IS AN
ISLAND, NO MAN STANDS ALONE. . .”
. . . as immortalized and expressed in the
song, “PANANAGUTAN. . .”
INTERSUBJECTIVITY
“PANANAGUTAN”
22. No man is an island,
No man stands alone,
Each man's joy is joy to me,
Each man's grief is my own.
We need one another,
So I will defend,
Each man as my brother,
Each man as my friend.
I saw the people gather,
I heard the music start,
The song that they were singing,
Is ringing in my heart.
No man is an island,
Way out in the blue,
We all look to the one above,
For our strength to renew.
When I help my brother,
Then I know that I,
Plant the seed of friendship,
That will never die.
“NO MAN IS AN ISLAND”
23. A term originally coined by
the philosopher Edmund
Husserl (1859-1938)
The interchange of
thoughts and feelings ,
both conscious and
unconscious, between two
persons as “subjects” as
facilitated by empathy
INTERSUBJECTIVITY
24. interchange of thoughts
and feelings
persons as “subjects”
empathy (putting oneself
into the other)
INTERSUBJECTIVITY
31. The human person cannot and will not live
alone. He needs his fellow being in order to
live. In the world where he lives, there is a
need to interact with fellow human beings in
order for him to survive. The human person
relates and engages to other people in the
spirit of dialogue. He talks while listening and
hears with understanding. A harmonious
relationship among fellow human beings is
important. The human person maintains a
good relationship with his family, friends,
schoolmates, and people in the community.
INTERSUBJECTIVE HUMAN RELATIONS
32. DIALOGUE – a deeper and more genuine kind of interaction
which is made possible when the self realizes that the other is
a genuine and unique individual
self-consciousness (acceptance of oneself)
awareness or recognition of the other’s presence and
existence
Note: How one views or treats the other person is a reflection
of his self-concept/self-esteem; a reflection of what is
within/ self-projection
when two individuals begin to view each other as an “other-
self”, and truly acknowledging each other’s presence and
accepting each other’s uniqueness and differences, then that
is the beginning of an authentic relationship and dialogue.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GENUINE HUMAN
INTERACTION
33. EMPATHY - the ability to share
emotions which enables us experience
another person’s emotions
(Note: When I lost my mom last
Christmas, I felt people’s empathy when
they shared in my grief and offered
comfort , felt my grief even if it was not
their own relative’s death)
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GENUINE HUMAN
INTERACTION
39. KEY POINT: HUMAN BEING’S QUEST OR
LONGING FOR THE SELF-REALIZATION OF HIS
BEING IS AN EXPRESSION OF HIS INHERENT
RATIONALITY. BUT THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE IF
HE RAMINS AN ISOLATED INDIVIDUAL AND
HAS NO RELATION WITH OTHER HUMAN
BEINGS. IT IS THROUGH INTERSUBJECTIVITY
THAT SELF-BEING REALIZES HIS SELFHOOD
AND FINDS AND EXPRESS FREEDOM AND
TRUTH.
