Born in 1824, Jackson was one of the South's most prominent generals during the first half
of the American Civil War up until his death in May 1863. Serving under General Robert E.
Lee, Jackson led the Confederate forces charge in the Battle of Antietam, the Second Battle
of Bull Run, and the Battle of Chancellorsville, during which he was wounded from friendly
fire and ultimately died.
Born Thomas Jackson, he earned the Stonewall moniker during the First Battle of Bull Run
in 1861. A fellow general commented that he stood like a stone wall upon rushing his troops
to close a gap in the Confederate army's line of defense during a determined Union attack.
Prior to his service during the war, Jackson served 10 years as an artillery tactics professor
at the Virginia Military Institute. A native of Virginia, he wished for his home state to remain
in the Union, but ultimately showed loyalty to his state instead of the federal government.
