Terrell Herring has a strong philanthropic commitment that
extends to a board position with Bridging the Gap Africa.
Seeking to enhance access to health care and economic
opportunities, the nonprofit assists rural Kenyan
communities in the construction of footbridges across
treacherous rivers. Bridges also help prevent deaths by
drowning and from hippopotamus and crocodile attacks.
An early 2016 visit by a team of volunteers to a small village
in remote Central Pokot demonstrated the effects of the
bridges they help build first hand.

3.  The community’s footbridge had been taken down a
number of years ago, as river bank erosion concerns
came to the fore. The result was that 230 students were
no longer able to easily access their school, with a
detour to a spot that was safe to cross taking several
hours. This also impacted a number of teachers who
resided on the far side of the river and had to walk
long distances each day.
This lengthy detour was eliminated last year through
expedited placement of a reconstructed footbridge
designed to provide safe crossings. During the fact-
finding trip, several other locations in urgent need of a
bridge were identified and have become a current
Bridging the Gap focus.
