2. Instructional Strategies
These strategies are used by teachers to support
students in their reading comprehension.
Examples include think alouds in which the
teacher explicitly models a strategy for the
students so they know when to use it. Also,
building background knowledge improves
student understanding of the text by providing a
point of reference.
3. Comprehension Strategies
Comprehension strategies are used by students
to help clarify the text they are reading in order
to improve their comprehension.
Examples of these include graphic organizers
such as a venn diagram or story map.

relationship) strategy

4. Guided Comprehension:Monitoring
Using the INSERT Technique
In this lesson (IRA, 2014A) the comprehension
strategy was showing students how to mark the
text to identify why they didn’t understand it. It
could be that there was a word they didn’t know or
that it conflicted with their prior knowledge.
The instructional strategy used was that the teacher
modeled for the students how to use this strategy
when reading.
5. Metacognition
Metacognition is when a student thinks about
their thinking. According to our textbook,
metacognition is also about understanding
when and what strategy to use while reading in
order to improve comprehension (Reutzel &
Cooter, 2016)
6. Cognitive and Affective Aspects
Cognitive aspects that inform comprehension
are traditional instruction, strategies and skills.
Affective aspects that inform comprehension
are how engaged the student is when reading a
text and their self efficacy or how well they
perceive themselves as proficient readers.
