3. What are Calibration Equipment?
Certain equipment which are used to calibrate the temperature measuring instruments are
called temperature calibration equipment.
Calibration equipment mainly consist of:
• Temperature sources
• Master Sensors.
Accurate Temperature Calibration
• Temperature Calibration can be carried out thermally in the case of probes or electrically in
the case of Instrument and it can be performed directly with certified equipment, or indirectly
with traceable standards.
• Thermal (Temperature) calibration is achieved by elevating (or depressing) the temperature
sensor to a known, controlled temperature and measuring the corresponding change in its
associated electrical parameter (voltage or resistance).
• The accurately measured parameters compared with that of a certified reference probe; the
absolute difference represents the calibration error. If the sensor is connected to a measuring
instrument, the sensor and the instrument combination can be effectively calibrated by this
technique.

Dry Block Calibrator
They are usually reasonable rapid heating and
cooling device. The unit consists of a special
designed heating block which has located internal
holes for the probes. Two types of unit are
available; portable units which can be taken on to
plant for the on-site calibration and laboratory
units to which industrial sensors are brought as
required.

13. Fluidized Calibration Baths
•The fluidized calibration bath is a unique method of providing closely controlled
temperatures. The bath consists of a very fine mesh aluminum oxide, a heated
chamber into which the medium is placed, and a means for slowly agitating the bath
by introducing a flow of air .
•By careful control of heat input and air flow, temperature of the bath can be
controlled within close limits thereby producing isothermal conditions between the
calibration standard and the test setup.
•Fluidized beds are useful for calibrating over the temperature range from ambient to
700˚ C.

33. • By connecting any thermocouple to measurement device three dissimilar metal
junction are created in the circuit: the thermocouple junction itself, or hot junction,
and the junction between each lead and the measurement device, or cold junctions.
• These cold junction provide their own thermoelectric voltages that are proportional
to the temperature at the device terminals.
• A technology known as cold junction compensation is therefore used to remove this
unwanted effect.

Master sensor is used as a reference sensor in comparison type calibration process.
Master sensor is put in the highly stable temperature zone along with sensor under
calibration, their reading is compared and error is calculated.
