In this enlightening webinar, Robert Greenfield, CEO of Umoja Labs and a blockchain expert, discusses the practical applications of Web3 and decentralized technologies in the nonprofit sector. Greenfield shares real-world examples of how charities and civil organizations can leverage these emerging technologies in tangible ways. From managing transparency in grant management to digitizing national currencies, he explores a wide range of use cases. Furthermore, he highlights the key obstacles and regulatory challenges in the context of developing nations. An essential watch for those keen on understanding how advancements in blockchain technology can help scale impact and modernize methods in the world of charitable work.

Before delving into how technology is modernizing cash assistance, we first need to
establish a baseline and answer the question, “Why modernize cash assistance at
all?” Here’s what we’ll cover today →

Although the Social & Public Sectors are slow
to move when leveraging technology -
gradually NGOs and government agencies
are starting to use blockchain technology to
improve the lives of those most in need.
Blockchain for Social Impact
Real-Life Case Studies
Impact Opportunities
Obstacles
Today, we will talk through several real-life
use cases in which blockchain technology is
used.
4. Blockchain for Social Impact
There are many verticals of impact within the blockchain
space. Here are a few that Umoja Labs has focused on,
ensuring that we can both actively test blockchain
applications in the field while also understanding new ways
to create solutions.
Umoja Labs Programming
Financial Inclusion Humanitarian & Development Aid
Micro-Saving Micro-Loans Insurance Cash Transfers & Vouchers

5. Hala Systems
Hala Systems develops advanced solutions for
civilian and asset protection, accountability, and
the prevention of violence before, during, and
after conflict.
With Umoja Labs, Hala augmented their
technology to include an immutable evidence
platform that allows anyone to verify the
authenticity of their data.
The platform allows for data to be confidentially
encrypted or publically available on the
Ethereum blockchain.
6. World Wildlife Fund
ConsenSys has engaged with the WWF on two
conservation efforts.
Viant’s ‘’Bait to Plate” initiative demonstrated
food provenance in action to help consumers
know if the tuna they’re really eating is actually
tuna.
CSI’s ongoing innovative finance initiative is
empowering NGOs to distribute the task of
curating the top conservation projects across
social practitioners, allowing WWF to focus less
on project curation and more on funding and
implementation.
7. Collaborative Healthcare
Solutions
Collaborative Healthcare Solutions is
looking to document the sexual assault
reporting supply chain to ensure survivors
have better transparency into the report
resolution process.
The use case also leverages an immutable
evidence model and tracks at which times
different stakeholders are processing a
report (from submission, to criminal
investigation, to support agencies
reaching out).
8. Project Unblocked Cash
Project Unblocked Cash, co-developed by
Umoja Labs and Oxfam Vanuatu, is the world’s
first digital currency humanitarian aid program.
It uses stablecoins to disburse money to
thousands of beneficiaries in seconds - where
each beneficiary is provided with an NFC card
that acts as their wallet (just like a debit card).
The solution can anonymously track spending
habits to forecast what resources will be needed
during crises and provide donors and financial
auditors with a 100% transparent program
report as to how they money was spent.
9. Bounties for Ocean
Conservation
The Bounties Network and Umoja Labs
have partnered to develop bounties based
philanthropy models, in which
communities are incentivized to clean their
localities, beaches, and oceans with
cryptocurrency.
The initiative kicked off between the
Bounties Network team and Emerging
Impact to raise awareness for ocean
conservation, and the use case will be
trialed in the Philippines this year.
10. Luxarity
LUXARITY is a social venture with the vision to
inspire a conscious living for all. Its mission is to
build a community that shares the values of
Responsibility, Awareness & Wonder by selling
curated pre-loved luxury goods, collaborating
with strategic partners, and giving all the
benefits back to the community through grants.
Umoja Labs and Luxarity are creating a non-
fungible donation experience through which
donors of goods and buyers of pre-loved items
can all transparently see where their value is
going.
12. Carbon Credit Market
EI has been investigating the Carbon Credit
Market, looking for more viable models to:
● Tokenized Carbon Credits within the
Commercial and Voluntary Markets
● Develop market-recognized methodologies
for leveraging blockchain and IoT
technologies for the use of sustainable
projects
● Enable lower socioeconomic consumers to
participate within these markets
13. Evolution of Microfinance
Cash Transfer Programming is the biggest
opportunity for blockchain within the social
sector. CTP sets the foundation for more
complex offerings in microfinance, including the
following:
● More fluid connection between liquidity of
rural banks and municipal banks
● The development of alternative forms of
collateral that couldn’t be used before
● Access to existing services that were
difficult to provide (insurance, etc.)
14. Tokenization of Emerging
Market Fiat Currencies
Although fiat currencies like the U.S. Dollar have
been tokenized a number of times, many
emerging market countries don’t have projects
that tokenize their currencies. Doing so will
● Build the foundation for financial
technology in the region
● Increase the speed of transactions and
settlement
● Increase the level of transparency in that
region’s financial system
16. Obstacles to Blockchain for Social Impact
Despite the many opportunities within the social sector to leverage
blockchain technologies, there are still many obstacles that we need
to overcome:
Lack of Willingness to
Sandbox Solutions
Mid-size and large NGOs
need to sandbox
applications in the field if
they hope to overcome
oncoming obstacles
Disconnect Between
NGOs and Technology
Companies
NGOs and technology
companies need to
collaborate to repurpose
existing technology for use
in the social sector
User Experience and
Design of Applications
Most applications still
cannot be used in areas
with low access to the
Internet or by unlettered
users
