We need to know what the Bible
teaches about Satan and demons

Biblical worldview
 Only one God - not polytheism.
 However, this God is active in His creation
 There are angels, one of which is the fallen angel
satan.
 God had created many types of angels
 The arrangement was “good” as was all creation
 But satan came in rebellion and was joined by
many other angels in actively opposing God

All power is of God
 Ultimately all power is from God.
 We can use or abuse this power.
 We must avoid syncretism - which is
intellectually stating one thing, but
working in another fashion

Satan’s goal
 Satan’s goal - to deprive God of His
glory, and get that glory for himself
 In the Old Testament, Israel was to live in
such a way as to bring God glory
 Our goal as believers: I Cor. 10: [31] Whether
therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye
do, do all to the glory of God.
 When we fail to do so, we please satan and
deprive God of His glory.

Remember:
 Isaiah 42: [8] I am the LORD: that is my
name: and my glory will I not give to
another, neither my praise to graven
images.
 Isaiah 48: [11] For mine own sake, even for
mine own sake, will I do it: for how should
my name be polluted? and I will not give
my glory unto another.

Faulty beliefs about demons
 Demons used to be active when Christ
was on earth, but no longer -
 Not so - New Age and the occult are
prominent today
 Even in the USA, there is active satan worship

 What used to be called demonic we now
call mental illness –
 But just sticking a label on it doesn’t explain it.
 Remember the limitations of science and a
scientific worldview.
 Measurable
 Repeatable under controlled conditions

Faulty beliefs about spiritual
sickness which is demonic
 Some problems are psychological and
others spiritual. The pastor then assumes
that he must refer those things that seem
to be psychological to the secular
psychologist.

 Christians aren’t subject to demonic activity
when we give in to the flesh
 Then why all the warnings given to
believers in the Bible about being alert,
wearing your armor, and resisting the
devil?

Theological facts
 Let’s look at what the Bible states about
satan and evil spirits…
 Their origin
 Their nature
 Their power
 Their defeat

We will begin with angels
 Satan is a fallen angel – Lucifer, who
was first the anointed cherub
 Demons are fallen angels too
 So we will begin by looking at some
characteristics of all angels. Then we
will look specifically at satan and then
demons

Angels are prominent in the
Bible
 Old Testament – 104 times
 New Testament – 165 times
 Mentioned in 34 books of the Bible

Angels are created by God
 Genesis 1:[1] In the beginning God created
the heaven and the earth. 2:[1] Thus the
heavens and the earth were finished,
and all the host of them
 Jn. 1:[3] All things were made by him;
and without him was not any thing
made that was made. (Speaking of Jesus
Christ, the Word made flesh)

 Nehemiah 9:[6] Thou, even thou, art
LORD alone; thou hast made
heaven, the heaven of heavens,
with all their host, the earth, and all
things that are therein, the seas, and all
that is therein, and thou preservest
them all; and the host of heaven
worshippeth thee.

 Colossians 1:[16] For by him were all
things created, that are in heaven,
and that are in earth, visible and
invisible, whether they be
thrones, or dominions, or
principalities, or powers: all
things were created by him, and
for him:

The angels were created, not
evolved
 Ps. 148:[2] Praise ye him, all his angels:
praise ye him, all his hosts.….[5] Let
them praise the name of the LORD: for
he commanded, and they were
created.
 We never read that more angels were
created; Jesus said they do not
reproduce

Sons of God
 It appears that this term is used of
angels both in the time of Noah, and
also in Job. We believe this means a
direct creation. We are also a direct
creation by the new birth – we are also
sons of God

Angels created before the
earth
 Job 38:[1] Then the LORD answered
Job out of the whirlwind, and said,…[4]
Where wast thou when I laid the
foundations of the earth? declare, if
thou hast understanding….[7] When the
morning stars sang together, and all the
sons of God shouted for joy?

Angels are to worship Jesus
 Heb. 1:[6] And again, when he
bringeth in the firstbegotten into
the world, he saith, And let all the
angels of God worship him. [7]
And of the angels he saith, Who maketh
his angels spirits, and his ministers a
flame of fire

Angels are spirit beings
 Heb 1: [7] And of the angels he saith, Who
maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a
flame of fire
 Lk 24: [37] But they were terrified and
affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a
spirit…[39] Behold my hands and my feet, that
it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit
hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

Angels characteristics
 They ate food with Abraham, with Lot
 They can use physical force, as when
they woke up Peter
 They are usually invisible, but can be
visible – as the times that they went to
Abraham and Lot, as well as the times
that John saw them in Revelation

Angels are superior to man at
this time
 Psalm 8:[4] What is man, that thou art
mindful of him? and the son of man,
that thou visitest him?[5] For thou hast
made him a little lower than the angels,
and hast crowned him with glory and
honour.

Angels are stronger than man
 Psalm 103:[20] Bless the LORD, ye his
angels, that excel in strength, that do
his commandments, hearkening unto
the voice of his word.
 II Thess. 1:[7] And to you who are
troubled rest with us, when the Lord
Jesus shall be revealed from heaven
with his mighty angels,

Angels are swifter and smarter
than man
 Daniel 9:[21] Yea, whiles I was speaking in
prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had
seen in the vision at the beginning, being
caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the
time of the evening oblation.[22] And he
informed me, and talked with me, and said, O
Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill
and understanding.

See this description
 Rev. 10[1] And I saw another mighty angel come
down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a
rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it
were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:[2] And
he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his
right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,
[3] And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion
roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders
uttered their voices.

Sorts of angels
 Archangels – two – Michael and Gabriel
 Cherubim – we find them guarding the tree of
life, and also above the ark of the covenant
 4 faces – ox, lion, man, eagle,
 2 pr. wings – one to fly, one covering body
 Legs like man; feet like calves hooves
 4 hands under the wings
 Travel in groups of 4 in quadrangle

Other sorts include
 Serafim – 6 wings; praise the holiness
of God
 4 living creatures – each with a face like
one of the 4 in the cherub; a body full of
eyes,
 Various levels of angels
 Satan was the anointed (chief) cherub

The number is beyond

 Rev. 5: [11] And I beheld, and I heard
the voice of many angels round about
the throne and the beasts and the
elders: and the number of them was ten
thousand times ten thousand, and
thousands of thousands;

and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was
white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure
wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his
wheels as burning fire.[10] A fiery stream issued and

ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten
thousand stood before him: the judgment was set,
and the books were opened.

Satan is a real person
 He is mentioned in 7 Old Testament
books and 19 New Testament books
 He is mentioned specifically by the Lord
Jesus Christ
 He has the character of persons
 Emotions
 Will
 Teaching, organizing….

The origin of the devil
 Ezekiel 28:12 Son of man, take up a
lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say
unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou
sealest up the sum, full of wisdom and perfect
in beauty. 13. Thou hast been in Eden the
garden of God; every precious stone was thy
covering, the sardius, topaz, and the
diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper,
the sapphire, the emerald, and the barbuncle,
and gold;
 Who was in Eden? Adam, Eve, God & satan

The origin of the devil…
 Ezekiel 28:13b the workmanship of thy tabrets
and of they pipes was prepared in thee in the
day that thou wast created. 14. Thou art the
anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set
thee so; thou wast upon the holy mountain of
God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst
of the stones of fire.
 He was an instrument – a sort of pipe organ
 He was a very high angel – a cherub, whose 4
faces & glory speak of the Lord Jesus Christ,
and whose job is to protect the holiness of God
Himself!

 Ezekiel 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways
from the day that thou wast created, until
iniquity was found in thee. 16 By the
multitude of thy merchandise, they have filled the
midst of thee with violence, and thou hast
sinned; therefore I will cast thee as profane out
of the mountain of God; and I will destroy thee, O
covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of
fire.
 Created without sin, but with a free will to
resist God

The origin of satan
 Ezekiel 28:17. Thy heart was lifted
up because of thy beauty, thou
hast corrupted the wisdom by
reason of thy brightness; I will cast
thee to the ground, I will lay thee before
kings, that they may behold thee.
 His problem was pride

The origin of satan
 Ezekiel 28:18 Thou hast defiled thy
sanctuaries by the multitude of thine
iniquities of thy traffic; therefore I will
bring forth a fire from the midst of thee;
it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee
to ashes upon the earth in the sight of
all them that behold thee.

The problem is pride: I will…
 Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from
heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How art thou cut down to the ground,
which didst weaken the nations! 13. For
thou hast said in thine heart, I will
ascend into heaven, I will exalt my
throne above the stars of God; I will sit
also upon the mount of the congrega-
tion, in the sides of the north,

The problem is pride: I will…
 Isaiah 14:14 I will ascend above the
heights of the clouds; I will be like the
most high (El Elyon) 15. Yet thou shalt
be brought down to hell, to the sides of
the pit.
 El Elyon – the strength of God, but not
His compassion, love, etc.

We see the great contrast
 Satan – 5 times – I will….
 Jesus Christ - 3 times in Gethsemane –
not My will but thine… Jesus always
did things pleasing to His Father

The names of satan include
 Satan – the adversary – 52 times
 The devil – the slanderer – 35 times
 The God of this world: 2 Cor. 4: [4] In
whom the god of this world hath
blinded the minds of them which believe
not, lest the light of the glorious gospel
of Christ, who is the image of God,
should shine unto them.

 He who has the power of death: Hebrews 2:
[14] Forasmuch then as the children are
partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself
likewise took part of the same; that through
death he might destroy him that had the
power of death, that is, the devil;

 The prince of this world: Jn. 12: [31] Now is
the judgment of this world: now shall the
prince of this world be cast out.
 Lucifer – the one who brings light: 2 Cor
11:[14] And no marvel; for Satan himself is
transformed into an angel of light.

The names of satan…
 The prince of the power of the air:
Ephesians 2:[2] Wherein in time past ye
walked according to the course of this
world, according to the prince of the
power of the air, the spirit that now
worketh in the children of disobedience:

 The dragon Revelation 12:[7] And
there was war in heaven: Michael and
his angels fought against the dragon;
and the dragon fought and his angels,
 Beelzebub Mt. 12:[24] But when the
Pharisees heard it, they said, This
fellow doth not cast out devils, but by
Beelzebub the prince of the
devils.

 Belial 2 Corinthians 6:[15] And what
concord hath Christ with Belial? or
what part hath he that believeth with an
infidel?
 The tempter: Mt. 4:[3] And when the
tempter came to him, he said, If thou
be the Son of God, command that these
stones be made bread.

The names of satan
 The wicked one: Mt. 13:[38] The field is
the world; the good seed are the
children of the kingdom; but the tares
are the children of the wicked one;
 A roaring lion: I Peter 5:[8] Be sober, be
vigilant; because your adversary the
devil, as a roaring lion, walketh
about, seeking whom he may devour:

The names of satan: the
enemy & Apollyon
 The wicked one: Mt. 13:[39] The enemy that
sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the
end of the world; and the reapers are the
angels.
 Apollyon (destroyer) Rev. 9:[11] And they
had a king over them, which is the angel of the
bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew
tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue
hath his name Apollyon.

The names of satan
 Liar & Murderer: Jn. 8:[44] Ye are of
your father the devil, and the lusts of
your father ye will do. He was a
murderer from the beginning, and
abode not in the truth, because there is
no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie,
he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar,
and the father of it.

The names of satan
 The accuser of the brethren: Revelation
12:[10] And I heard a loud voice saying
in heaven, Now is come salvation, and
strength, and the kingdom of our God,
and the power of his Christ: for the
accuser of our brethren is cast
down, which accused them before our
God day and night.

Satan wants to be like God
 He has his own trinity: the devil,
antiChrist, and the false prophet:
 Revelation 16:[13] And I saw three unclean
spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of
the dragon, and out of the mouth of the
beast, and out of the mouth of the false
prophet.

 He has his own false teachings: I
Timothy 4:[1] Now the Spirit speaketh
expressly, that in the latter times some shall
depart from the faith, giving heed to
seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

 He has his own church: Revelation 2:[9] I
know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty,
(but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of
them which say they are Jews, and are not,
but are the synagogue of Satan….3:[9]
Behold, I will make them of the synagogue
of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are
not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to
come and worship before thy feet, and to
know that I have loved thee.

 He has his own city: Revelation 2:[13] I
know thy works, and where thou dwellest,
even where Satan's seat is: and thou
holdest fast my name, and hast not denied
my faith, even in those days wherein
Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was
slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.

 He has his own kingdom: Luke 4:[5] And
the devil, taking him up into an high
mountain, shewed unto him all the
kingdoms of the world in a moment of
time.[6] And the devil said unto him, All this
power will I give thee, and the glory of them:
for that is delivered unto me; and to
whomsoever I will I give it.[7] If thou
therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

 He has his own preachers: 2 Cor. 11:[13]
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers,
transforming themselves into the apostles of
Christ.[14] And no marvel; for Satan himself is
transformed into an angel of light.[15]
Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers
also be transformed as the ministers of
righteousness; whose end shall be
according to their works.

 He has his own offerings and
fellowship: I Cor. 10:[20] But I say,
that the things which the Gentiles
sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils,
and not to God: and I would not that ye
should have fellowship with devils.

 He has his own angels: Revelation
12:[7] And there was war in heaven:
Michael and his angels fought against
the dragon; and the dragon fought
and his angels,

 He has his own miracles: Mt. 7:[21] Not every one
that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the
kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my
Father which is in heaven.[22] Many will say to me in
that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy
name? and in thy name have cast out devils?
and in thy name done many wonderful works?
[23] And then will I profess unto them, I never knew
you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

How satan works
 Satan loves to misuse the Bible
 Mt. 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the
holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the
temple. 6. And saith unto him, If thou be the
Son of God, cast thyself down; for it is
written, He shall give his angels
charge concerning thee; and in their
hands they shall bear thee up, lest at
any time thou dash thy foot against a
stone (but he left out Ps. 91:11b to keep
thee in all thy ways)

Many false teachings are
demonic in origin…
 I Tim. 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that
in the latter times some shall depart from the faith,
giving heed to seducing spirits, and
doctrine of devils; 2. Speaking lies in
hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a
hot iron; 3. Forbidding to marry, and commanding
to abstain from meats, which God hath created to
be received with thanksgiving of them which
believe and know the truth. 4. For every creature
of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be
received with thanksgiving; 5. For it is sanctified by
the word of God and prayer.

Some false doctrines which
may be demonic in origin
 Baptism removes sin
 You can lose your salvation
 Tongues is a proof of the Holy Spirit
 Sickness is the result of sin and/or lack
of belief, etc.

How the devil works
 He blinds the eyes of the lost so
that they don’t see the glory of God:
 2 Cor 4:[4] In whom the god of this
world hath blinded the minds of
them which believe not, lest the
light of the glorious gospel of Christ,
who is the image of God, should shine
unto them.

How the devil works
 He snatches away the word of God:
 Mt. 13:[19] When any one heareth the
word of the kingdom, and understandeth it
not, then cometh the wicked one,
and catcheth away that which was
sown in his heart. This is he which
received seed by the way side.

How the devil works
 He opposes the prayers of the
saved: Daniel 10:[11] And he said unto
me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved,
understand the words that I speak unto
thee, and stand upright: for unto thee
am I now sent. And when he had
spoken this word unto me, I stood
trembling.

How the devil works
 Daniel 10:[12] Then said he unto me, Fear
not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou
didst set thine heart to understand, and to
chasten thyself before thy God, thy words
were heard, and I am come for thy words.
[13] But the prince of the kingdom of
Persia withstood me one and twenty
days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief
princes, came to help me; and I remained
there with the kings of Persia.

The devil slanders
 Job – that he does not love God, but just the
things God gives him. Job 1:[9] Then Satan
answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear
God for nought?[10] Hast not thou made an
hedge about him, and about his house, and
about all that he hath on every side? thou hast
blessed the work of his hands, and his
substance is increased in the land.

The devil slanders
 Job 1:[11] But put forth thine hand
now, and touch all that he hath, and
he will curse thee to thy face.
 Joshua the high priest: Zachariah 3:[1] And
he shewed me Joshua the high priest
standing before the angel of the LORD, and
Satan standing at his right hand to
resist him.

The devil deceives
 Peter over Jesus’ death on the cross:
 Mt. 16:[22] Then Peter took him, and
began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from
thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.[23]
But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get
thee behind me, Satan: thou art an
offence unto me: for thou savourest
not the things that be of God, but
those that be of men.

Satan incited Judas to betray
Jesus
 Luke 22:[3] Then entered Satan
into Judas surnamed Iscariot,
being of the number of the twelve.
 John 13:[27] And after the sop
Satan entered into him. Then said
Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do
quickly.

Satan incited Ananias to lie
and David to number Israel
 Ananias: Acts 5:[3] But Peter said,
Ananias, why hath Satan filled
thine heart to lie to the Holy
Ghost, and to keep back part of the
price of the land?
 I Chron. 21:[1] And Satan stood
up against Israel, and provoked
David to number Israel.

The devil works against
believers
Satan wanted to sift Peter
Luke 22:[31] And the Lord said, Simon,
Simon, behold, Satan hath desired
to have you, that he may sift you
as wheat:

Satan sets traps for us
 I Tim. 3:7 Moreover he must have a
good report of them which are without;
lest he fall into reproach and the snare
of the devil
 2 Tim. 2:26 And that they may recover
themselves out of the snare of the
devil, who are taken captive by him at
his will

He afflicts believers
 Job 2:[7] So went Satan forth from the
presence of the LORD, and smote Job with
sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his
crown.
 2 Cor. 12:[7] And lest I should be exalted
above measure through the abundance of the
revelations, there was given to me a thorn in
the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me,
lest I should be exalted above measure.

We can expect the devil to attack
the institutions God made
 Family: I Cor. 7:3. Let the husband render unto
the wife due benevolence; and likewise the wife
unto the husband. 4. The wife hath not power of
her own body, but the husband; and likewise also
the husband hath not power of his own body, but
the wife. 5. Defraud ye not one the other, except
it be with consent for a time, that ye give
yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come
together again, that Satan tempt you not for
your incontinency.

 Church: Acts 20:28. take heed
therefore unto yourselves, and to all
the flock, over the which the Holy
Ghost hath made you overseers, to
feet the church of God, which he hath
purchased with his own blood. For I
know this, that after my departing shall
grievous wolves enter in among you,
not sparing the flock. And of your own
selves shall men arise, speaking
perverse things, to draw away
disciples after them.

 Church: 2 Cor. 11:13 For such are
false apostles, deceitful workers,
transform-ing themselves in to the
apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for
Satan himself is transformed into an
angel of light. Therefore it is no great
thing if his ministers also be
transformed as the ministers of
righteousness; whose end shall be
according to their works.

Satan’s locations
 First – the covering cherub in heaven
 Ezek. 28:[14] Thou art the anointed
cherub that covereth; and I have set
thee so: thou wast upon the holy
mountain of God; thou hast walked up
and down in the midst of the stones of
fire.[15] Thou wast perfect in thy ways
from the day that thou wast created, till
iniquity was found in thee.

Satan’s locations
 In heaven as God’s enemy: Job 1:[6]
Now there was a day when the sons of
God came to present themselves
before the LORD, and Satan came also
among them.[7] And the LORD said
unto Satan, Whence comest thou?
Then Satan answered the LORD, and
said, From going to and fro in the earth,
and from walking up and down in it

Satan’s locations
 On earth – not heaven: Rev. 12: [7] And there was
war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against
the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,[8]
And prevailed not; neither was their place found any
more in heaven.[9] And the great dragon was cast
out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan,
which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out
into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him

Satan – the bottomless pit
 Rev. 20:[1] And I saw an angel come down from
heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a
great chain in his hand.[2] And he laid hold on the
dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and
Satan, and bound him a thousand years,[3] And cast
him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set
a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations
no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled:
and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Satan back briefly on earth
 Rev. 20:[7] And when the thousand
years are expired, Satan shall be
loosed out of his prison,[8] And shall go
out to deceive the nations which are in
the four quarters of the earth, Gog and
Magog, to gather them together to
battle: the number of whom is as the
sand of the sea.

Satan’s final location – hell
 Rev. 20:[9] And they went up on the breadth
of the earth, and compassed the camp of the
saints about, and the beloved city: and fire
came down from God out of heaven, and
devoured them.[10] And the devil that
deceived them was cast into the lake of fire
and brimstone, where the beast and the false
prophet are, and shall be tormented day and
night for ever and ever

The devil has many helpers –
evil spirits
 Revelation 12:3 And there appeared
another wonder in heaven; and behold a
great red dragon, having seven heads and
ten horns, and seven crowns upon his
heads. 4. And his tail drew the third
part of the stars of heaven, and did
cast them to the earth…
 We believe that 1/3 of the angels fell and
followed Lucifer in rebellion against God

It appears that this was a
defining point
 As far as we understand, the faithful
angels cannot sin from this point on
 And the fallen angels cannot help but
sin, and cannot be restored. There is
no evidence that satan or his fallen
angels can repent and return to God

The devil’s angels…
 Revelation 12:7 And there was war in
heaven: Michael and his angels fought
against the dragon; and the dragon
fought and his angels

Evil spirits
 Are persons
 They have a will
 They have a name
 They can talk
 They can act
 Usually you don’t see them, but
they can make themselves seen

Evil Spirits in Revelation
 Revelation 9:7 And the shape of the locusts
were like unto horses prepared unto battle;
and on their heads were as it were crowns
like gold, and their faces were as faces of
men. 8 And they had hair as the hair of
women, and their teeth were as the teeth of
lions. And they had breastplates as it were
breastplates of iron; and the sound of their
wings as the sound of chariots of many
horses running to battle…

Evil Spirits….
 Revelation 9:10 And they had tails like unto
scorpions, and there were stings in their
tails; and their power was to hurt men five
months. 11 And they had a king over
them, which is the angel of the
bottomless pit, whose name in the
Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in
the Greek tongue hath his name

Evil spirits…
 Revelation 9:17 And thus I saw the horses in
the vision and them that sat on them, having
breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and
brimstone; and the heads of the horses were
as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths
issued fire and smoke and brimstone. 18 By
these three were the third part of men killed
by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the
brimstone which issued out of their mouths.

Evil Spirits
 Revelation 9:19 For their power is in their tails; for
their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads,
and with them they do hurt, 20. And the rest of
the men which were not killed by these plagues
yet repented not of the works of their hands, that
they should not worship devils (evil spirits), and
idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone,
and of wood; which neither can see, nor hear, nor
walk. 21. Neither repented they of their murders,
nor their sorceries, nor their fornication, nor of
their thefts.

Character of evil spirits
 They are spiritual, therefore not
usually seen
 They are powerful, though they
vary in power
 They are liars
 They are extremely clever

What do evil spirits do?
 They can cause sicknesses
 Blindness
 Deafness
 Seizures
 Paralysis
 Often they make a person
unconscious
 They often take over the power of
speech

Evil spirits
 Mk. 9:[17] And one of the multitude
answered and said, Master, I have
brought unto thee my son, which hath a
dumb spirit;…[20] And they brought
him unto him: and when he saw him,
straightway the spirit tare him; and he
fell on the ground, and wallowed
foaming.

 Lk. 8:[29] (For he had commanded the
unclean spirit to come out of the man.
For oftentimes it had caught him: and
he was kept bound with chains and in
fetters; and he brake the bands, and
was driven of the devil into the
wilderness.)

Evil spirits
 Luke 13:[11] And, behold, there was a
woman which had a spirit of infirmity
eighteen years, and was bowed
together, and could in no wise lift up
herself.

 [16] And it came to pass, as we went to
prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a
spirit of divination met us, which brought her
masters much gain by soothsaying:[18] And
this did she many days….But Paul, being
grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I
command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to
come out of her. And he came out the same
hour.

What do evil spirits do?
 They may kill the individual
 They can place thoughts in your head
 They give false teachings – probably
many cults have this as one basis
 They know that they are doomed to
hell, but apparently are unable to
repent
 They hate humans, especially
believers
 They prefer to inhabit bodies, people
or animals – Legion and the pigs

Jesus had many conflicts with
evil spirits
 His presence seemed to bring them out.
 They had to flee at His command:
 Mk. 1:[23] And there was in their synagogue
a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried
out,[24] Saying, Let us alone; what have we
to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art
thou come to destroy us? I know thee who
thou art, the Holy One of God.

 Mk. 1:[25] And Jesus rebuked him, saying,
Hold thy peace, and come out of him.[26]
And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and
cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
[27] And they were all amazed, insomuch
that they questioned among themselves,
saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine
is this? for with authority commandeth he
even the unclean spirits, and they do obey
him.

evil spirits
 They recognize the difference in authority of
spiritual believers. Acts 19:15 Jesus I know,
and Paul I know; but who are ye? 19. And
the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped
upon them, and overcame them, and
prevailed against them, so that they fled out
of that house naked and wounded.

Evil spirits are well organized
 Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh
and blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of darkness of
this world, against spiritual wickedness in
high places.
 Ephesians 1:21 Far above all principality, and
power, and might, and dominion, and every
name that is named, not only in this world, but
also in the world which is to come.

Some evil spirits are apparently
evil rulers over countries
 Daniel 10:12 Then said he unto me, Fear
not, Daniel; for from the first day that thou
didst set thine heart to understand, and to
chasten thyself before thy God, thy words
were heard, and I am come for thy words.
12. But the prince of the kingdom of
Persia withstood me one and twenty
days, but lo, Michael, one of the chief
princes, came to help me; and I remained
there with the kings of Persia…

How do we open the door to
evil spirits?
 Remember that we have three great
enemies of the spiritual life:
 Our old nature
 The world system under the devil
 The devil himself

Temptation and the flesh
 James 1:13 Let no man say when he is
tempted, I am tempted of God; for God
cannot be tempted with evil, neither
tempteth he any man; 14. But every
man is tempted when he is drawn away
of his own lust, and enticed.
