Why do Research Titles Matter?
Before we look at how to title a
research paper, let’s look at a
research title example that
illustrates why a good research
paper should have a strong title.
Imagine that you are researching
meditation and nursing, and you
want to find out if any studies
have shown that meditation
makes nurses better
communicators. You conduct a
keyword search using the
keywords “nursing”,
“communication”, and
“meditation.” You come up with
results that have the following
titles:
1. Benefits of Meditation for
the Nursing Profession:
A. Spelling
- ontological research questions
- epistemological research
questions
-respondents
-predictive questions
B: Reading Selection
What makes a good
qualitative research question?
Qualitative market research
questions are most effective for
those looking to carry out one-
to-one or focus group-style
interviews to understand how
your target demographic thinks
and feels; and why they make
certain choices. The key
qualities of a good qualitative
research question are, being
able to discover problems and
opportunities from respondents,
open-ended in nature and easy
to understand and digest with no
need for clarification.
For many qualitative market
researchers, agreeing on a
question to ask an individual or
focus group marks the beginning
point of any piece of research.
A. Spelling
- literature
- context
-exploratory
-explanatory
-descriptive
B. Reading Selection
The qualitative research questions
consider the “why and how” aspects of
decision-making and don’t require any
statistical tools in the analytical process,
as done in the other statistical analysis.
The qualitative analysis doesn’t require
large random samples, it focuses on
small and well-focused data sets, and the
research methodology classifies data into
patterns to conclude results.
Data can be in many forms, such as text,
images, sounds, etc. The most crucial
requirement for successful qualitative
research is an in-depth understanding of
the target subject.

A. Spelling
- reformulation
-delimitations
-significance
- triangulation
B: Reading Selection
An effective PowerPoint
presentation is just an aid to the
presentation, not the
presentation itself.
Dos
 Be brief and concise.
 Focus on the subject.
 Attract attention;
indicate interesting
details.
 If possible,
use relevant visual
illustrations (pictures,
maps, charts graphs,
etc.).
 Use bullet points or
numbers to structure
the text.
 Make clear statements
about the

All four of these titles may
describe very similar studies—
they could even be titles for the
same study! As you can see, they
give very different impressions.
Title 1 describes the topic and the
method of the study but is not
particularly catchy.
 Title 2 partly describes
the topic but does not
give any information
about the method of the
study—it could simply be
a theoretical or opinion
piece.
 Title 3 is somewhat
catchier but gives almost
no information at all
about the article.
Poorly constructed qualitative
research questions can affect
the outcome of a study, with
unclear responses resulting in a
considerable waste of
resources.
A good example of a qualitative
research method would be
unstructured interviews. This is
because these generate
qualitative data using open
questions allowing a respondent
to talk at length, choosing their
own words. This helps the
researcher develop a real sense
of a person’s understanding of a
situation.
Remember that qualitative data
isn’t limited to words or text.
Photographs, videos, and even
sound recordings can be
considered qualitative data.
Choose an effective purpose
statement.
It’s important to set out the core
objective or intent of your
qualitative research from the
outset. A single sentence
purpose statement should define
essence/results of the
topic/research.
Don'ts
 Don't write down the
whole outline of your
paper and nothing
else.
 Don't write long full
sentences on the
slides.
 Don't use distracting
colors, patterns,
pictures, decorations
on the slides.
 Don't use too
complicated charts,
graphs; only those
that are relatively
easy to understand.
Region I

San Fernando City
 Title 4 begins with a
catchy main title and is
followed by a subtitle that
gives information about
the content and method
of the study.

The use of qualitative words
such as ‘discover’, ‘understand’
and ‘explore’ help to set the tone
of the question and demonstrate
your desire to delve deeper.
However, qualitative can change
over the course of a study
because this type of research is
a reflexive process. A
researcher adapts their
approach based on participants
words and actions. As the
researcher gains information
from participants, the focus of
the inquiry may shift.
Qualitative research questions
often contain words like lived
experience, personal
experience, understanding,
meaning, and stories.

Guidelines on formulating titles of
research papers in the academe
(American Psychological
Association, 2001):
1. The title should encapsulate the
main idea of the research.
2. Title should be self-explanatory.
3. Identify theme, subtheme, and
categories.
4. Avoid using abbreviations
5. Use words that create a
positive impression and stimulate
reader’s interest.
6. May reveal how the paper will
be organized.
7. Do not include “study of,"
“analysis of” or similar
constructions
8. Use current nomenclature from
the field of study
9. Indicate accurately the subject
and scope of the stud
10. The recommended length of a
research title is 10 to 12
substantive words
not including articles.

  • 2. Region I LA UNION SCHOOLS DIVISION OFFICE San Fernando City Preliminary Activity 5-Minute Reading Program A. Spelling - Abbreviations - Catchy - Substantive - Nomenclature - theoretical issues B. Reading Selection Why do Research Titles Matter? Before we look at how to title a research paper, let’s look at a research title example that illustrates why a good research paper should have a strong title. Imagine that you are researching meditation and nursing, and you want to find out if any studies have shown that meditation makes nurses better communicators. You conduct a keyword search using the keywords “nursing”, “communication”, and “meditation.” You come up with results that have the following titles: 1. Benefits of Meditation for the Nursing Profession: A. Spelling - ontological research questions - epistemological research questions -respondents -predictive questions B: Reading Selection What makes a good qualitative research question? Qualitative market research questions are most effective for those looking to carry out one- to-one or focus group-style interviews to understand how your target demographic thinks and feels; and why they make certain choices. The key qualities of a good qualitative research question are, being able to discover problems and opportunities from respondents, open-ended in nature and easy to understand and digest with no need for clarification. For many qualitative market researchers, agreeing on a question to ask an individual or focus group marks the beginning point of any piece of research. A. Spelling - literature - context -exploratory -explanatory -descriptive B. Reading Selection The qualitative research questions consider the “why and how” aspects of decision-making and don’t require any statistical tools in the analytical process, as done in the other statistical analysis. The qualitative analysis doesn’t require large random samples, it focuses on small and well-focused data sets, and the research methodology classifies data into patterns to conclude results. Data can be in many forms, such as text, images, sounds, etc. The most crucial requirement for successful qualitative research is an in-depth understanding of the target subject. https://www.proprofssurvey.com/blog/qua litative-research-questions/ A. Spelling - reformulation -delimitations -significance - triangulation B: Reading Selection An effective PowerPoint presentation is just an aid to the presentation, not the presentation itself. Dos  Be brief and concise.  Focus on the subject.  Attract attention; indicate interesting details.  If possible, use relevant visual illustrations (pictures, maps, charts graphs, etc.).  Use bullet points or numbers to structure the text.  Make clear statements about the Setting Classroom Rules
  • 3. Region I LA UNION SCHOOLS DIVISION OFFICE San Fernando City A Quantitative Investigation 2. Why Mindful Nurses Make the Best Communicators 3. Meditation Gurus 4. Nurses on the Move: A Quantitative Report on How Meditation Can Improve Nurse Performance All four of these titles may describe very similar studies— they could even be titles for the same study! As you can see, they give very different impressions. Title 1 describes the topic and the method of the study but is not particularly catchy.  Title 2 partly describes the topic but does not give any information about the method of the study—it could simply be a theoretical or opinion piece.  Title 3 is somewhat catchier but gives almost no information at all about the article. Poorly constructed qualitative research questions can affect the outcome of a study, with unclear responses resulting in a considerable waste of resources. A good example of a qualitative research method would be unstructured interviews. This is because these generate qualitative data using open questions allowing a respondent to talk at length, choosing their own words. This helps the researcher develop a real sense of a person’s understanding of a situation. Remember that qualitative data isn’t limited to words or text. Photographs, videos, and even sound recordings can be considered qualitative data. Choose an effective purpose statement. It’s important to set out the core objective or intent of your qualitative research from the outset. A single sentence purpose statement should define essence/results of the topic/research. Don'ts  Don't write down the whole outline of your paper and nothing else.  Don't write long full sentences on the slides.  Don't use distracting colors, patterns, pictures, decorations on the slides.  Don't use too complicated charts, graphs; only those that are relatively easy to understand.
  • 4. Region I LA UNION SCHOOLS DIVISION OFFICE San Fernando City  Title 4 begins with a catchy main title and is followed by a subtitle that gives information about the content and method of the study. References 1. Hairston, M., & Keene, M. 2003. Successful writing. 5th ed. New York: Norton. University of Southern California. 2017. Organizing your social sciences research paper: choosing a title. [Online] Available at: http://libguides.usc.edu/writing guide/title a roadmap for the overall study. The use of qualitative words such as ‘discover’, ‘understand’ and ‘explore’ help to set the tone of the question and demonstrate your desire to delve deeper. However, qualitative can change over the course of a study because this type of research is a reflexive process. A researcher adapts their approach based on participants words and actions. As the researcher gains information from participants, the focus of the inquiry may shift. Qualitative research questions often contain words like lived experience, personal experience, understanding, meaning, and stories. A. ACTIVITY Collaborative Learning Approach Learners will proceed to their group and process the answers in reading selection.
