Editor's Notes
Hello, my name is Taylor Rock and I am here to present a professional development on technology integration. We will be covering the benefits of technology integration as well as possible uses. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to do so. My goal is to help all educators see the purpose of technology integration and the positive impacts it can have on students in classrooms.
Any decision made where student learning will be impacted must be researched and discussed. Technology integration is a way of enhancing modeling and learning activities for students across grade levels. Teachers are able to include digital tools and devices into their lesson plans to differentiate learning, implement engaging lessons, and even assess student understandings. No matter the need within the classroom, technology can be a quality solution or support.
Technology does impact the learning and teaching within school buildings. When making the choice to implement educational websites and tools you are widening the opportunities for students. Many educational websites allow educators to assess student learning. When educators know student strengths and needs they are able to plan accordingly to assist in meeting learning goals and objectives. Educators also are able to provide students with choices when completing projects and presentations. Instead of just poster board, students can present videos, podcasts, and even slideshows. As you ponder the many ways technology will change your classroom, please watch the included TedTalk video (TEDxTalks, 2018).
When facilitating projects or group work within classrooms, technology can provide choice and additional resources for students. Students can use document sharing software such as google docs to collaborate on assignments. Students can also use library databases to research topics and even collaborate amongst other schools. No matter the topic, educators can provide support and model skills needed to utilize these tools (Minero, 2019).
Technology can assist in the process of conducting research for both students and teachers. When educators are a part of a collaborative professional learning team, members are expected to research new tools, techniques, and strategies. Team members within learning teams will use online databases to read completed case and research studies on the topic their group is working on. Technology can also be a part of student research projects within their classrooms.
There are a variety of skills digital tools and websites assist in preparing students for the future. For example, students are able to be familiarized with presentation tools when presenting final projects to their classmates. These tools can then help students in their educational futures and careers.
Each school district has a different amount of funding provided for technology and digital tools. Even classrooms with one computer available can implement technology that impacts student learning outcomes. Educators can create slideshows for lessons that include images and videos can engage and motivate students. These lesson presentations can also be utilzied to review material or even provide more modeled examples to support student needs.
Classrooms with access to multiple computers or classroom sets also have a variety of ways to implement technology into learning. Educators at the lower elementary level can utilize computers within center activities for listening to reading or educational games. Educators can also assign group work or use educational websites to differentiate learning tasks to fit the current skill levels. No matter the subject area, teachers can use the computers to motivate students to practice the skills and content knowledge modeled during lessons.
Educators will access to a variety of handheld digital devices can implement them into review activities and formative assessments. Any content standard or skill can be tested with a formative assessment to collect data on students abilities and understandings.
Educators with access to ipad’s, tablets, and laptops can allows for flexible learning. Educational apps can be used to practice needed reading and mathematics skills. Writing assignments can be typed, shared, and edited on laptops. Even the camera features can be used to edit and display projects and models created by students.
To end our lunch and learn session, I will review what we discussed today. Technology integration can be implemented into a wide range of school day activities and lessons. It also benefits students learning needs, motivation, and ability to make choices within their assignments.
