Plant layout refers to the arrangement of physical facilities such as machinery, equipment, furniture, etc. within the factory building in such a manner so as to have the quickest flow of material at the lowest cost and with the least amount of handling in processing the product from the receipt of material to the shipment of the finished product. Plant layout is also known as the facilities design. It constitutes planning of the amount of space required for all kinds of activities in industry, i.e, equipment, machinery, furniture, fittings, offices, restrooms, warehouses, etc.

2. What Is A Plant Layout ?
Plant layout refers to the arrangement of physical facilities such as machinery, equipment,
furniture etc. with in the factory building in such a manner so as to have quickest flow of
material at the lowest cost and with the least amount of handling in processing the product from
the receipt of material to the shipment of the finished product.Plant layout is also known as the
facilities design. It constitutes planning of the amount of space required for all kind of activities in
an industry, i.e,equipment, machinery, furniture and fittings, offices, rest rooms, warehouses etc.

5. Process Layout
Keep similar machine and similar operations in one place.
Machines are arranged according to their function
6. Line Layout
Less space required for the same
volume of production.
Material handling is lesser, which
reduces time and cost.
Coordination will be better,
production planning, and control
will easier.
Fewer skill workers maybe do the
work.
Product Layout
7. Combination Layout
➔ A combination layout combines the advantages of both process
layout and product layout. These days pure process and product layouts
are rare.
➔ A combination layout is possible where the item is made in different types
and size. In such case machinery arrange in a process layout but process
grouping is then arranged in the sequence of various types and sizes of
the products.
8. Fix Position Layout
In other types of layouts, the product moves past the stationary production equipment, but in fixed
position layout, product kept stationary, and equipment moves around it.
Fixed-position layout is applicable in shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturer, etc.
➔ It is possible to assign one or more skilled workers from the start of a project to finish in order to ensure
continuity of work.
➔ Involves the least movement of materials, manufacturing of large size product is possible.
➔ A number of quite different projects can be taken with the same layout.
9. Objectives Of Plant Layout
The primary objective of plant layout is to maximize production at minimum cost.
The layout should be designed in such a way that it is flexible to change according
to new processes and production techniques.
● Minimizing handling of materials.
● Maintaining flexibility of operations.
● Ensuring optimum utilization of men, materials, equipment and available space.
● Achieving good work flow and avoiding accumulation of work.
● Minimizing delays and bottlenecks in the production system.
● Ensuring safety of workmen by minimizing and eliminating the chances of
accidents.
● Providing for effective supervision and production control.
● Minimizing work-in-process inventory.
● Providing sufficient and conveniently located service centres.
● Flexibility in design to adapt to the changing future requirements.
