Eureka moments!
One day in the 1920s, the great American composer George Gershwin was travelling to a concert in
Boston. While he was sitting alone on the train, he suddenly got the idea for the most famous work,
Rhapsody in blue. When youlisten to the music today, youcan hear the train wheels and the
whistle!
Night was falling and the Moon was shining. Beethoven was walking around Vienna – he was
looking for inspiration. As he was passing a small house, he heard one of his compositions.
Somebody was playing it on the piano but kept on making mistakes. Beethoven was intrigued and
decided tofind out whoit was. He entered the house and realised that the girl at the piano was
blind. He sat and played music to her foran hour. Suddenly the Moon appeared at the window.
Beethoven was excited by the special atmosphere in the room and began to compose the famous
Moonlight Sonata.
In the summer of 1837, the Polishcomposer Chopin was living in Paris. Late one evening he was
composing alone in his music room. While he was sitting at the piano, a small kitten suddenly ran
across the piano keys. Chopin liked the strange melody and tried to write it down. In 1838, he
published a new composition. The title? – The Cat Waltz!
