About the Centre for Research on Inner City Health
ACHIEVE is housed at the Centre for Research on Inner City Health (CRICH). CRICH is dedicated
to reducing health inequities through innovative research that supports social change.
CRICH conducts research to better understand the linkages between poverty, social exclusion and
poor health. We also work in partnership with community agencies and decision-makers to evaluate
population health interventions to improve health outcomes for inner city populations. CRICH is part
of the Keenan Research Centre in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital.

2. The ACHIEVE Research Partnership
Brief Overview
Approach: We are motivated by the CIHR’s goal to produce the next generation of “creative agents for
change,” and by the Institute of Population and Public Health’s call for interventions research, defined as
“the use of scientific methods to produce knowledge about policy and program interventions that operate
within or outside of the health sector and have the potential to impact health at the population level.”
2014-2015 is the final year of the ACHIEVE program and Fellows will be supported for 1 year. The
program will be substantially condensed from previous years and will emphasize working with CRICH
faculty to enhance individuals’ publishing and data analysis skills with fewer group learning activities. We
have ample data and opportunities to enhance these skills in areas such as homelessness and
Aboriginal health research. ACHIEVE will provide support for Fellows to seek funding a second year in
the program.
Competencies
ACHIEVE is designed to equip new researchers with competencies that are typically unavailable through
conventional research training, yet are necessary for closing the gap between measuring urban health
inequities and reducing them.
• Population Health and Health Services Interventions Research
o Research skills to understand and monitor the health of inner city health populations
o Research skills to understand and evaluate complex program and policy interventions
• Community-Engaged and Partnered Research
o Capacity to participate in and lead integrated knowledge translation projects
o Capacity for transdisciplinary and interprofessional teamwork
o Knowledge of critical ethical/cultural/legal issues relevant to health equity-focused
research.
Aboriginal Health Research:
We strongly encourage Aboriginal applicants who are interested in pursuing research related to urban
Aboriginal health. Qualified candidates will be assessed on their knowledge of Indigenous approaches to
health, their effectiveness and experience in Aboriginal community engagement, and research
experience.
ACHIEVE is located at the Centre for Research on Inner City Health (CRICH) in Toronto. Toronto has
the largest Aboriginal population in Ontario and is home to a large variety of Aboriginal organizations that
support the health, social and cultural needs of the Aboriginal community, thus making the transition to
Toronto more manageable.
