EDITOR
E
nergy is sustainable when it “meets
the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs”. Most
definitions of renewable energy include
considerations of environmental issues
such as greenhouse gas emissions and
social and economic issues such as energy
poverty. Renewable energy sources like wind,
hydropower, solar and geothermal energy are
generally more sustainable than fossil fuels.
Solar energy is the conversion of renewable
energy from sunlight into electricity, using
photovoltaic (PV) energy directly, indirectly
using concentrated solar energy or a
combination. Concentrated solar energy
systems use lenses or mirrors and solar tracking
systems to focus a large area of sunlight on a
small beam. Photovoltaic cells convert light into
electric current through the photovoltaic effect.
Photovoltaic energy was initially used
exclusively as a source of electrical energy
for small to medium-sized applications,
from the computer powered by a single
solar cell to remote homes powered by a
7. rooftop photovoltaic system with no grid
connection. Commercial concentrating
solar power plants were first developed in
the 1980s. Since then, as the cost of solar
electricity has dropped, grid-connected
solar photovoltaic systems have grown more
or less exponentially. Millions of gigawatt
photovoltaic plants and plants have been
and are under construction. Photovoltaic
solar energy has quickly become an
affordable, low-carbon technology.
The International Energy Agency said
in 2021 that in the “Net Zero by 2050”
scenario, solar would contribute about
20% of global energy consumption
and solar would be the largest source
of electricity in the world. China has the
largest number of solar installations.
In 2020, solar energy generated 3.5%
of the world’s electricity, up from less
than 3% the previous year. In 2020, the
levelled unsubsidized electricity cost for
large-scale solar was about $ 36 / MWh,
and installation cost about a dollar per
watt of DC.

NERERL
Initiate all activities in the field of Non-conventional
Energy Sources like Solar, Wind, Biomass, Microhydel
and Municipal Solid Waste
About Nererl
The NORTH EAST RENEWABLE ENERGY
RESEARCH LAB, situated in Jorhat, is a research
centre dedicated to applied solar energy research,
with the goal of implementing and promoting
projects in rural and urban regions across the
country, particularly in Assam. R&D activities will be
focused on innovative ideas that will eventually lead
to a solution for the adoption and usage of renewable
energy, as well as the state’s long-term development.
We are pursuing a variety of R&D efforts in the sphere
of renewable energy for upscaling and upliftment of
the underserved. In order to increase the income
of village farmers and reduce their reliance on
power, NERERL has already implemented many
projects in similar fields that are currently in various
phases of implementation.
NERERL has developed a ground-breaking new
strategy to provide inexpensive solar energy to the
people of Assam and beyond. The early stages will
focus on the development of localised villages, while
the later stages will take advantage of state and
national development to achieve the long-term aim.
North East Renewable Energy Research Lab is an
R&D institute working under Ministry of New &
Renewable Energy, Government of India, based out
of Jorhat, India.
Vision
A leading solar energy research institute in the world,
contributing to global sustainable development.
Mission
To initiate all activities in the field of Non-
conventional Energy Sources like Solar, Wind,
Biomass, Microhydel and Municipal Solid Waste etc.
and thereby tap the potential to generate energy for

17. various uses either industrial or
domestic and specially for the rural,
hilly and border areas not connected
with the conventional grid. We have
zeal to develop and commercialise solar
technologies suited for urban and tropical
applications, and support industry development
and the energy transformation towards higher
solar adoption.
Objectives
Renewable energy sources and technologies have the
potential to bring solutions to India’s and Assam’s
long-standing energy concerns. Renewable energy
sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, biomass,
small and mini hydro, and fuel cell technology can
be employed to help India solve its energy shortage.
India will require a secure supply of 3-4 times more
energy than it consumes today in the next 10 to 15
years to meet the energy needs of such a rapidly
rising economy. One of the choices for meeting this
criterion is renewable energy.
In India, initiatives connected to research,
development, demonstration, manufacture, and use
of a variety of renewable energy technologies for use
in various industries have been vigorously pursued
during the last two and a half decades. It is believed
that more attention should be placed in the R&D
sector, where local meteorological conditions and the
availability of local resources should be prioritised.
The state must play a substantial role in closing this
gap and promoting renewable energy research, with
a focus on regionally appropriate renewable energy
technology. As a result, NERERL, in collaboration
with AEDA, will focus on the development of village
areas through energy research and development.

KAMMA Gear Flywheel
Power Generation
D
r. Srinivas Bhaskar Chaganti, an Andhra
Pradesh mechanical engineer, has developed
a novel device that creates electricity without
the usage of conventional fuel or energy. Dr. Chaganti
told The Hitavada, “The KAMMA gear flywheel power
production concept is the world’s first power generating
system that uses weight, diameter, and RPM instead
of natural energy and fuel.” Heat, work, and internal
energy transfers from one object to another are
investigated and utilised to the KAMMA gear flywheel
power generating system in Kinetics Associated Mass
Mechanical Applications (KAMMA).
“This approach works like a sponge that can absorb
water and squeeze that absorbed water whenever
necessary,” he explained. “The KAMMA gear flywheel
can absorb rotational kinetic energy and use that
kinetic energy whenever necessary.” Dr. Chaganti has
been creating pollution-free green energy generating
and storage systems for over three decades. “I have
resolved to devote my complete scientific knowledge
and experience in constructing technology to the
advancement of society in the future.”
“This notion is my innovation, and it is the world’s
first fuelless power generation technology,” said Dr.
Chaganti. India is behind the curve when it comes to
obtaining patents for inventions. Dr. Chaganti, on the
other hand, received a patent for his idea, which will
be a future electricity generation concept. For this
creation, he also received excellent feedback from the
Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The PMO advised the
Ministry of Power to incorporate the ‘Flywheel’ into the
renewable energy industry.
“There is no information and technology concerning
this technology available in any engineering institutes,
universities, or university libraries anywhere in the
globe,” Dr. Chaganti stated. This technique can generate

power producing technology with the
lowest maintenance costs. He said that the cost of
generating one unit (Kwh) is less than two rupees, while
the cost per MW is Rs 4 crore.
“This technology will cater to the demands of all sectors
of the country,” says Dr. Chaganti. “This technology
should help every individual and every family to make
India a well-developed and self-sufficient country in the
power industry,” Dr Chaganti remarked. Dr. Chaganti
had come to town with his invention in order to raise
awareness about it. On Tuesday, a huge number of

22. Electrifying Nation
Power/Energy is among the most critical component
of infrastructure, crucial for the economic growth and
welfare of the nation. The energy sector in India is one
of the most diverse in the world. The sources of power
generation range from conventional sources like coal,
lignite,naturalgas,oil,hydropowerandnuclearpower
to unconventionally unsustainable sources like wind,
solar, agriculture & household waste (also termed as
wet waste). The demand for electricity in the country
is growing rapidly and is expected to continue to rise
in the coming years. In order to meet the country’s
growing demand for electricity, production capacity
must be increased.
Generation Performance
The total electricity generation including generation
from renewable sources in the country during the
year 2020-21 (Up to December 2020) was 1017.8
BU as against the generation of 1055.8 BU during
the same period last year, showing a reduction of
3.6%, mainly due to COVID pandemic. The target
of electricity generation from conventional sources
for the year 2020-21 was fixed as 1330 Billion Unit
(BU). The actual generation during the year 2020-21
(up to December 2020) was 905.9 BU as compared
to prorata generation target of 1005.642 BU for the
period and actual generation of 950.733 BU during the
same period last year, representing an achievement of
90.1% and showing a reduction of 4.71% in growth,

Power Supply Position
During the year 2020-21 (up to December 2020), peak
shortage was 0.4% and the energy shortage was 0.3%
as compared to 0.7% and 0.5% respectively last year.
In May 2018, India ranked fourth in Asia Pacific out
of 25 countries based on an index that measures its
overall strength. India ranks 4th in wind energy, 5th
in solar energy and 5th in installed renewable energy
capacity in 2018. India ranks sixth on the list of
countries that have made significant investments in
clean energy worth $ 90 billion. India is the only G20
country that is on the track to achieve the goals of the
Paris Agreement.
Rise of Renewable Energy Sources
AftersigningtheParisAgreement,Indiangovernment
took all the necessary steps to meet its goals. Currently
India is ranked as one of the top nation in the world
heading towards immense development in renewable
energy sectors to fight climate change and global
warming. Data provided by the certain authorities,
states that, “as of July 2021, India had 96.96 GW of
renewable energy capacity, and represents 25.2% of
the overall installed power capacity, providing a great
opportunity for the expansion of green data centres”.
By 2022, solar energy is estimated to contribute 114
GW, followed by 67 GW from wind power and 15
GW from biomass and hydropower. The target for
renewable energy has been increased to 227 GW by
2022.
In FY22 (until June 2021), the total thermal installed
capacity in the country stood at 234.05 GW.
Installed capacity of renewable, hydro and nuclear
energy totaled 96.95 GW, 46.32 GW and 6.78 GW,
respectively.
Installed Capacity for different RES (as of June 2021)
Total Capacity: 3, 88,608.78 MW
Road Ahead
The cabinet is committed to increasing the use
of clean energy sources and is currently running
various large sustainable energy projects that strongly
promote green energy. In addition, renewable
energies have the potential to create many jobs at all
levels, especially in rural areas. The Ministry of New
and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has set itself the
ambitious goal of building 227 gigawatts of renewable
energy capacity by 2022, including around 114
gigawatts for solar energy and 67 gigawatts for wind
and other hydropower and bioenergy. Among other
things India’s renewable energy sector is expected to
attract $ 80 billion in investment over the next four
years. Around 5,000 compact biogas plants will be
built across India by 2023.
The Government of India wants to develop a ‘green
city’ in every state of the country, powered by
renewable energy. The ‘green city’ will mainstream
environment-friendly power through solar rooftop
systems on all its houses, solar parks on the city’s
outskirts,wastetoenergyplantsandelectricmobility-
enabled public transport systems.
It is not just government’s responsibility, we as an
individual need to contribute and use electricity
wisely; wasting the energy could possibly deplete
our resources early and could possibly cause more
heating our planet without any need.

eNew Power, established in 2011, is one of
India’s leading renewable energy company
in terms of total energy generation capacity.
Since commencing operations with a 25.2 MW wind
project in Jasdan, Gujarat, the company has grown
exponentially, and has a current renewable asset base
of over 10 GW, including projects under development
and in the pipeline. In October 2019, ReNew Power
became the 1st RE company in India (and 10th
globally) to cross 5 GW of installed capacity. In 10
years of its operation, ReNew projects have generated
many jobs, directly and indirectly. In 2019-20 ReNew
Power contributed nearly 1% of the total electricity

ind energy is one of the most practical
source of electricity generation as it keeps
blowing all around. Wind power is one of
the fastest growing renewable energy technologies
after solar energy. It is being utilised worldwide due
to its rise in affordability. Getting better in price and
raising the capacity to generate necessary power are
the key points driving the wind power to gain more
popularity. If we talk about the global installed wind
generation capacity it has increased by a factor of
almost 75 in the past two decades, jumping from 7.5
Giga watts (GW) in 1997 to some 564 GW by 2018,
according to IRENA’s (International Renewable
Energy Agency) latest data.
What is Wind Farms?
To harness the wind’s power in to electricity one wind
turbine can generate energy up to certain extent.
Wind farms or Wind Park, also termed as Wind
Power Station or Wind Power Plant, is a group of
wind turbines in the same location used to produce
electricity. Wind farms vary in size from a small
number of turbines to several hundred wind turbines
covering an extensive area. Wind farms can be either
onshore or offshore.
Since they require no fuel, wind farms have less
impact on the environment than many other forms
of power generation. Wind farms have, however,
been criticised for their visual impact and impact
on the landscape. Typically they need to be spread

31. over more land than other power stations and need
to be built in wild and rural areas, which can lead
to “industrialization of the countryside”, habitat loss,
and a drop in tourism.
Onshore Wind Farms
Onshore wind energy refers to turbines installed on
land rather than on water. They are commonly found
in low-population areas with low conservation value.
According to the International Energy Association,
onshore wind power increased by 12% in 2019.
Capacity additions also increased by 22% after several
years of outages.
Advantages of Onshore Wind farms
■ Less Expensive
■ Shorter cables for energy transmission
■ Quick installation
■ Low impact on surroundings
Disadvantages of Onshore Wind Farms
■ Varying with speeds
■ Potential wind blockages
■ Visual and sound factors
Offshore Wind Farms
Offshore wind energy refers to wind farms in the
shallow open ocean, usually at sea, where the wind
speed is high. The term “offshore wind” can also
refer to coastal waters such as lakes and fjords. Most
offshore wind farms use solid foundation wind
turbinesinshallowwater.Butastechnologyadvances,
deeper floating wind farms can be built. According to
the Global Wind Energy Association, offshore wind
power will increase to more than 234 GW by 2030,
especially in the Asia-Pacific region.
Advantages of Offshore Wind Farms
■ More wind consistency
■ More energy generation
■ Less visual impact
■ Big in size
Disadvantages of Offshore Wind Farms
■ High installation cost
■ Heavy maintenance & repairs
■ Impact of noise on marine life
■ Generates less jobs compared to Onshore farms
Conclusion
Coastal area around the globe has the capacity to
fulfill the need of electricity in current scenario. But,
as we are heading towards the research it shows the
consequences as well. It all depends on the materials
used in the construction of a turbine later how long
willitgenerateenergyforus?Andmosttheimportant,
will it be cost effective in all factors considered?
It depends on our engineers and scientists who are
developing this technology. It is up to us whether we
accept the better technology in the right time or not.

38. Need for Growth
Electric energy has become a basic need for humans
for survival. Almost every activity is directly or
indirectly connected with electricity. Since its
invention, electricity generation sources have been
changing and evolving to increase its density of
production. Currently, coal is the major source of
electricity generation globally and is also one of the
major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
Hydropower plants on the other side are the second
most popular source of energy generation as it was
one of the first sources of electricity generation.
But, the electricity demand kept rising as innovative
products came into existence.
As the demand grew, pressure builds on power
plants to match the desired demands. Petroleum
products are currently leading the charge of energy
and power, but soon electric energy will replace it
as the reserves of petroleum wells begins to deplete.
Currently, we are generating electric power from
multiple sources in different parts of the world.
The USA and other powerful nations were highly
dependent on coal power plants, later they realized
& started searching for a better and sustainable
source of energy generation as there’s a limit to coal
as a fuel.
Sources of Energy
The sources of electricity generation are mainly
divided into two parts: Renewable/non-
conventional sources and Non-Renewables/
conventional sources. We are almost familiar and
known to these sources:
How long can we rely
on Renewable Energy
Sources?
38 OCTOBER 2021 SwiftNLift
39. 39
OCTOBER 2021 SwiftNLift
☐ Hydroelectric Power
Hydroelectric plants use hydropower to produce
power. In this manner, a dam is based on a
waterway to hold water, making a supply, similar
to a lake.
Then, at that point, the gathered fluid is driven
through lines to the force to be reckoned with.
There, turbines and generators are utilized
to change the dam content tension into a
development, producing power from water.
☐ Thermal Power
Thermoelectricplantsareanotherwayofproducing
electricity. In this case, the system works by heating
the water with fossil fuels, including petroleum,
natural gas, and coal. The heating produces steam,
which is led by pipes to the turbines, making them
spin. The turbines are connected to generators
that create an internal electromagnetic field,
forming electricity.
Unlike the previous option, this electricity source
is not renewable, as it is powered by finite fossil
fuels. They also cause environmental impact
due to the burning of the materials, generating
air pollution.
☐ Nuclear Power
Atomic plants utilize radioactive components, like
uranium, to produce energy. In this framework,
the core of the uranium molecule is broken down,
delivering a lot of hotness (energy), which is the
reason they are known as wellsprings of “atomic”
power. The hotness delivered in these plants is
utilized to transform water into steam, which is
led by pipes, advancing the development of the
turbine that, thusly, moves the electric generator.
The significant benefit of this choice is the usage
limit, which gives 1 kWh of energy to each pound
of charcoal (453.59 g). In spite of the fact that it
merits recalling that it isn’t sustainable, since it
needs radioactive material simultaneously.
☐ Solar Energy
We all are known to solar photovoltaic cells or
popularly known as solar PV panels, are the most
utilized sources of renewable energy and contribute
in huge numbers in generating electric power. The
advancement in its technology has made it possible
to afford and install. The current market trend
suggests that it will generate electricity effectively if
we place it on our rooftop which comprises vacant
space and receives ample amount of sunlight in
every urban area.
It can solve our basic problems of power cut
and charging our small electronic devices by
storing the energy generated from solar panels in
the batteries.
☐ Wind Energy
Solar panels have a limit in generating electricity
as they can be highly productive only on bright
sunny days. The wind blows day and night with a
certain average speed in selected areas that can be
able to generate electricity from wind farms. The
functioning is simple; It works through turbines,
which look significantly like a pinwheel, that move
due to the wind.
It converts wind power into electricity with the
help of a generator and rotor, an internal moving
part that generates electromagnetic fields that are
transformed into electric power.
Dependency on Renewables
Renewable sources are better for climate change and
had already contributed to reduce our dependence
on dirty fuels like coal and oil resources. According
to the data published by IRENA (International
Renewable Energy Agency), renewable energy
resources contributed to 16% of the total global
energy production supply in the year 2019.
As time passes by, the energy sources are getting
affordable and more productive that leads to
generating electricity as per our need. The point of
this article is how long we can rely on these sources
as they have a certain life span? There are no
further plans on waste management from renewable
resources which could lead to a major concern for
the future generation. There has to be an alternate
plan to overcome dependency on current renewable
energy sources.
