This set of slides is from the Road Safety Conference 2014 and was delivered by Joe Green, Sustrans' Smarter Choices Manager in the West Midlands.
It explores:
How can Travel Plans be used to support and encourage cycling across a range of settings?
What support do people need to overcome safety (and other) concerns to cycling?
How can Travel Plans contribute to increased safety while still encouraging more cycling?

The role of Travel Plans
1.
2. Sustrans is the charity that’s enabling people to travel by
foot, bike or public transport for more of the journeys we
make every day. Our work makes it possible for people to
choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys, with
better places and spaces to move through and live in.

3. The Role of Travel Plans
• How can Travel Plans be used to support and
encourage cycling across a range of settings?
(Organisational Level)
• What support do people need to overcome
safety (and other) concerns to cycling?
(Individual Level – PTP)
• How can Travel Plans contribute to increased
safety while still encouraging more cycling?
4. What is a Travel Plan?
• A Travel Plan is more than just a document
• It is a package of measures & actions designed
to encourage safe, healthy & sustainable travel
choices
• A good Travel Plan is site-specific, includes a
range of measures (hard & soft), is multi-modal,
and is suitably managed and monitored.
• Travel Planning is a process…

6. Where could Travel Plans be used?
• Schools
• Workplaces
• Stations
• Key Trip Generators (e.g. leisure, retail)
• Hospitals
• Colleges & Universities
• New Developments (residential or business)
• with Individuals – PTP
7. Personalised Travel Planning (PTP)
• Delivering PTP for more than 10 years
• Predominantly used for engaging with people in
a residential/household context – but elements
can also be applied in other settings
• Supports individuals to identify how they could
change how they currently travel, key barriers
to this and what’s needed to overcome these
• It works! Previous projects show proven impact
of both modal shift and financial savings
8. Personalised Travel Planning (PTP)
The key elements of our approach are:
• Tailored to individuals & areas – ‘Personalised’
• Collates and promotes a package of information
(materials, resources & other services/activities)
• Identifies & focuses on achievable changes, e.g.
considering a specific journey
• Helps people to overcome barriers by providing
motivation and highlighting the benefits
• Followed-up to review and revisit
9. We asked 100 people, apart from safety concerns
what things discourage you from cycling?
1) Weather
6) Not Convenient
2) Time
7) Things to Carry
3) Distance
8) No Bike/Equipment
4) Fitness
9) Appearance/Clothing
5) Lack of Knowledge
10) Security concerns
10. To consider cycling, people need…
SKILLS & CONFIDENCE
ENVIRONMENT
INFORMATION
EQUIPMENT
ENCOURAGEMENT
16. Does more cycling have to mean more casualties?
• There are activities which address safety concerns
that can be progressed through Travel Plans
• PTP needs to overcome people’s safety concerns
• Need for a holistic approach to the challenges of
increasing cycling, tackling various issues
• The most successful programmes are those that
combine a range of measures and activities
• BUT what is the impact of not promoting and
encouraging cycling…?
