• Etymology: socio/ socius and logos
• the science of the origin, growth and
evolution of social customs, standards and
institutions. It analyzes and defines them, and
studies the causes that tend to force people
below normal standards, thus showing us how
to prevent recurrent lapses from these norms,
as well as to relieve abnormal conditions.
3. Branches of sociology
• Pure sociology: theoretical and historical
sociology
• Applied sociology: social pathology, or social
economy, or social legislation and social work.
• Critics: However there is limited focus on

• Humanism is the root; people matter
– Super ordinate science of humanity which calls us
to action and to change the world.
– Not just “what is” but “what ought to be”
– implementing a science of humanity is a matter of
envisioning an ideal society and integrating the
disciplines in the service of humanity.
– All knowledge is a power strategy.
– Knowledge for what? Creating society that meets
human needs

• Sociology is not merely academic discipline
but based on the real world problem
• Sociology leads to social action and social
betterment
• Sociology is the study of how to make better
world
