Editor's Notes
Hello and welcome to the on-line lessons and assignments material for CIVL 202.
The on-line material is a series of weekly lessons, each week consisting of 3 or more lessons. Within each lesson is material to read, and sometimes short videos to watch, as well as the occasional question aimed at helping you learn the presented material.
For example, the lessons for week one can be found by selecting “Week 1 – Intro to Sustainable Development” from the left-hand menu on the CIVL 202 CONNECT page. Once you select this menu item, you will see three lessons, as well as the on-line assignment that you should complete before Jan 11.
Now you are ready to see what is inside each week’s lesson.
Start by selecting the lesson you wish to learn. Note that it may take some time to load the lesson. Thanks in advance for your patience with this. We are working on improving the speed.
Let’s again consider Week 1. Here is what Lesson 1 of Week 1 looks like. Note that the Lesson contains 4 pages. Page 1 is shown here. You can advance to page 2 by selecting it from top of the lesson screen. Or, you may select the “>” arrow at the bottom of each lesson page, so that you can proceed to the next page of the lesson.
When you have completed the lessons for the week, you are ready to complete and submit the week’s assignment.
Selecting “assignment” on the week’s page, directs you to the quiz function available within CONNECT. For example, selecting “Week 1 Assignment” here, brings you to this page. In order to complete the weekly assignment, simply select “begin”, and then answer each question in the “quiz”.
You can take as long as you like to answer each question, go back and forth between questions, and revise your answers as many times as you wish. You are welcome to complete the assignments within a study group or on your own.
To submit your assignment, simply select the “Save and submit” button that is located at the top and also at the bottom of the assignment (i.e. the “quiz”) page.
The first assignment is quite easy. Subsequent assignments will be more difficult and time consuming.
The assignment questions are very similar to questions that are on the midterm and also on the final exam. So completing the weekly lessons and the assignments will help you prepare for the midterm and the final. Both the week prior to the midterm, as well as the week prior to submitting the term project, are assignment-free.
There are a total of 10 assignments. By completing the entire set of questions for the week, you will earn 1 mark (i.e. 1% of your total CIVL 202 course grade), up to a total of 9 marks. So, you need only complete 9 of the 10 assignments in order to get full assignment marks.
The assignment mark (which is out of 9 for the entire term) is a “participation mark”. In other words, you do not need to get the correct answer to obtain credit for completing a given question. Also, please note that you will only get the participation mark for the week if you complete ALL questions within the assigned lessons.
You are now ready to start the lessons in Week 1.
Once you have submitted your assignment, the answers will be revealed within the quiz.
