• Layered manufacturing
• Part is produced by producing multiple “slices”
• From 3D model [STL file] to physical object

Material jetting
7
• Droplets of material are deposited
from the print head onto surface
where required, using either
thermal or piezoelectric method.

• DMLS (Direct Metal Laser
Sintering)
-Exclusively used to
produce metal parts
• SLM (Selective laser melting)
• EBM (Electron beam melting)
-Attains fusion with the use
of a high-energy electron beam
-Produces less residual
stress resulting in less distortion

What is FDM?
10
• Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), or Fused Filament Fabrication
(FFF),
• material extrusion
• FDM, an object is built by selectively depositing melted material in
a pre-determined path layer-by-layer

12. Jens Martensson
What is FDM?
12
• A spool of thermoplastic filament is first loaded into the printer
• After getting desired temperature of nozzle
• filament is fed to the extrusion head
• The melted material is extruded in thin strands and is deposited
layer-by-layer
