Wednesday, May 23, 2010 - Fifty Boys & Girls Club
members, their families and Club staff enjoyed a Winston-
Salem Dash Baseball Game as special guests of Chancellor
Donald Reaves of Winston-Salem State University.
Wednesday, July 28, sixty children from the International
Boys and Girls Club attended a Dash game sponsored by
Prudential Carolinas Realty. Their outing even prompted a
write-up in the Winston-Salem Journal.
We wish to thank our sponsors on behalf of these children
who may not otherwise have had this opportunity .

Friday, June 25, 2010 - Six Winston-Salem Boys & Girls
Club members attended The Salvation Army R.E.A.C.H.
Program Banquet at Carowinds. R.E.A.C.H. is part of the
educational component of Boys and Girls Club programs.
Staff keeps track of each member’s academic record and
conduct. All members that participate in the program receive
either a “Giant Step” or a “Fast Track” award.
Four members from the Ken Carlson Club and two members
from the International Club who showed outstanding
improvements this year were chosen to represent Winston-
Salem at the banquet. They received an award and enjoyed
activities at the park after the ceremony.
Congratulations go out to Ariana Jimenez, Abraham Candel,
Jerome Pittman, Aquilla Boyd, Deja Dobson and Cameron
Fuller!

Saturday, June 5, 2010 - Members of the Advisory Council
under the leadership of Patricia Poe did an excellent job
organizing the Community Day and Open House at the Ken
Carlson Boys & Girls Club. This was the third time the Ken
Carlson Club held a Community Day. Over twenty
companies and organizations took part in the exhibits and
activities and shared lots of information and their talents
with the attendees.
Lt. Robert Long and Sunjata Smith, Program Director at Ken
Carlson, were invited to promote the event on Fox8 News.
Sam’s Club donated the hot dogs and buns that were served
from The Salvation Army Canteen. Doctors and staff from
Prime Care conducted sixty-one sports physicals, while the
Community Care Center provided free screenings for
diabetes and blood pressure problems.
The Salvation Army Drum Corps and Peace Haven Praise
Band were just some of the many groups that participated
and added a musical component.
Sylvia Adams, Director of Boys and Girls Clubs, was
extremely pleased with the great turn out and thanked all the
participants and organizers.
Jane Poe, who heads up the Career Skills Program, was
excited to see two girls from her Career Skills Program,
Nautica Baldwin and Candace Oglesby, spend the entire day
volunteering.
Lots of food, fun and fellowship made Community Day a
huge success.

Members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, a Greek letter
fraternity that exemplifies the ideals of brotherhood,
scholarship and service, spoke with members at the Ken
Carlson Boys and Girls Club about the qualifications required
to pledge and the benefits of being in a sorority or fraternity.
New Programs and events were added to the
schedule at The Salvation Army Boys and
Girls Clubs this summer. The Dance, Arts
and Crafts, and Computer Teachers really
added some fun and excitement!

Campers who attended computer classes learned proper
typing techniques and explored a number of new applications.
They learned games that taught typing skills, which were
popular. Instructions also included discussions on social
networking sites and internet safety, teaching children how to
avoid predators.
Campers got to explore Microsoft Office software, including
Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint. They learned
specific applications to help with schoolwork, such as typing
papers, designing brochures, flyers and certificates, setting up
spreadsheets and creating Power Point presentations.
The instructor was amazed at the interest students showed and
the great progress they made. The future is promising for all
young people who show hard work and passion for learning,
especially in the field of computers. In the future all jobs will
require some use of technology. Knowing the many uses of
computers will be a very valuable asset to these students.

“Badges for Baseball” pairs law enforcement professionals
with youth as mentors and coaches.
The program gives young people a positive way to spend time
after school when they’re most likely to get in trouble. The
program uses baseball and softball to engage children with
positive role models. Youngsters learn the basics of baseball
and softball while, also developing character.
In North Carolina, Badges for Baseball served more than
6,000 young people in 17 communities across the state in
2009. This year over 100 officers from 39 different law
enforcement agencies across North Carolina are participating
in the program through Boys and Girls Clubs and Police
Athletic Leagues, along with 145 other adult mentors.
Badges for Baseball is made possible through grants from
both the North Carolina Department of Justice and the Cal
Ripken, Sr. Foundation.

3. WSSU / Motorsports Brings their Program to The
Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs
WSSU/Motorsports Management Team visited the Boys &
Girls Club and talked to members about how to pursue a
career in Motorsports Management. WSSU is the only 4-year
University in the country and the only historically Black
College and University to offer a Bachelor of Science degree
program in Motorsports Management. They talked to mem-
bers about exciting career opportunities in motor sports.

From Monday, July 12 through Friday, July 16, members of
Calvary Baptist Church conducted Vacation Bible School at
the International Boys & Girls Club. Members enjoyed a
week of Bible classes, arts and crafts, games, and pony rides.
Not only did they have lots of fun, but it was a great learning
experience as well. We thank all of our friends at Calvary
Baptist Church for an awesome week!

The Tommy Lambeth Summer Basketball League at The
Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs of Winston-Salem is
currently in its second year.
The program was established last year through funding from
the Tommy Lambeth Charitable Foundation. Tommy
Lambeth was a former Boys and Girls Club member who
loved basketball.
In its first summer, the league attracted over two-hundred
basketball players, both boys and girls. The players played
games three times a week. A tournament organized by the
league attracted 225 participants and because of the great
demand for the program, it was extended throughout the fall
of 2009. This year the program continues to grow.
We would like to thank the Lambeth family, their friends and
supporters, as well as all the parents and volunteers for their
participation and for continuing to make this basketball
program the huge success that it is.
Campers learned all types of dances this summer. Dancing
provides the children with opportunities to exercise their bod-
ies while challenging their artistic expression.
The campers explored different styles of dancing and learned
to express themselves through Hip Hop, Reggae, Zamba,
Praise Dance, African Dance and Bala. They also were given
time to create their own dances.

Boys and Girls Club Members from Winston-Salem
attended The Salvation Army’s Camp Walter Johnson in
Denton, North Carolina, from July 3rd through July 8th.
They enjoyed swimming, paddle boating, arts and crafts,
dancing, basketball and many other activities while at camp.

Long before June 14, the beginning of our summer
programs, staff took part in a variety of training sessions
including CPR and "Safe From Harm," a comprehensive
program designed to prevent child sexual abuse.
This summer the programs at the Ken Carlson and
International Boys and Girls Clubs were more structured
and the numbers of children were limited to 257 at the Ken
Carlson Club, and 103 at the International Club. Teachers
and certified instructors provided classes in dance, art, com-
puter training and outdoor sports. Club members had the
opportunity to rotate classes during the day.
Our staff is here to help you in any way possible. Your
child's safety, happiness and self-esteem are of great
importance to us. Should you ever have any questions or
concerns, wish to observe classes or activities, or just
simply need to talk, we are always available.

Saturday, May 15, 2010 - The Salvation Army Ken Carlson
Boys and Girls Club again hosted The Salvation Army Annual
Girls Games Room Tournament. The tournament was held from
9:00 am to 3:00 pm and over two hundred girls from North
Carolina Clubs participated.
The girls competed in chess, checkers, Chinese checkers,
Connect Four, pool, air hockey, bumper pool, table tennis, and
foosball.
The girls showed great sportsmanship and had a great time
sharing in the fun, fellowship and the great food and snacks.
Continuing their winning streak from last year, the Ken Carlson
Boys & Girls Club girls again won 1st Place.
