3. 1. PROJECT BACKGROUND
Increase in population as a result of industrial revolution in major towns and cities of the
world have necessitated rapid growth and high rate of urbanization and development.
Nigeria cities in recent time have witnessed rapid population growth resulting from influx
of migrants from rural area to the cities. Majority of these migrants causing high rate of
urbanization lack adequate support for urban lifestyle which make them settle in slums
in the cities.
Also, globally, pollution control and waste management has been identified as one of the
major areas that has to be developed to achieve a clean and green environment and to
enhance adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
In the midst of the poor management of waste in Africa, lies a high poverty rate with
more than 70% of Nigerians living below the poverty line and majority lacking means of
livelihood.
To positively exploit the untapped potentials buried in effective waste management in
Africa, WasteWatch Africa seeks to launch the “URBAN SLUMs EMPOWERMENT
PROGRAM (USEPro Africa)”. The project will promote the ‘REUSE’ hierarchy of waste
management thereby reducing waste that gets to the landfill and promote a sustainable
environment.

5. GOAL AND OBJECTIVE
• To consolidate the thrift market in Nigeria and Africa, something that does not
exist yet, and get to extend the life-cycle of the collected items, thereby reducing
raw material usage for the production of new items and subsequently reduce
waste that gets landfilled.
• To develop the circular economy by making one man’s trash another man’s
treasure.
• To reduce poverty in urban slums across Africa by engaging the local citizens,
helping them achieve a higher standard of living.
