3. STEM CELL CONCEPTS
In Multicellular organisms stem cells are undifferentiated or partially
differentiated that can differentiate into various types of cells as well as they
have self renewable cells that proliferate independently to produce more of the
same stem cell they are found in both embryonic and adult mechanisms.
4.
5. HISTORY OF STEM CELLS
19th Century
Theoder Buveri and Valentin hacker coined the
term Stem Cell
6. The history of stem cell therapy and
research began in the year 1902 when a
Russian histologist Alexander M.
Maximow identified his interest in the
blood stem cells and connective tissues.
He confirmed the unitarian theory of
hematopoiesis and proved that all blood
cells mature from a precursor cell.
7. In 1960 Ernest McCulloch and
James Till proposed the key
properties of stem cells at University
of Toronto.
8. In 1958 French Oncologist Georges Mathe proposed bone
marrow transplant
9. ESSENTIAL PROPERTIES OF STEM CELLS FOR THE USE IN CLINICAL TRANSPLANTATION
1. Capable of clonal propagation in
invitro
2. Genetic stability at high passage
3. Integration within the host brain
transplantation
4. Migration and enfragment at sites of
damage
5. Correct differentiation into appropriate
neural cell types and Lack of side
effects
10. SOURCES OF STEM CELLS
1. Human embryonic stem cells
2. Human umbilical cord stem cells
3. Immortlised cell lines
4. Foetal neural stem cells
5. Adult neural cell types
6. Bone marrow derived cells
7. Induced pluripotent stem cells
