This is aimed to teach Korean from basics to people who are interested.
This lesson focuses on Korean alphabets, character placement and how to write your names, or any word basically.
2. Introduction
o 안녕하세요. 저는 한국어 선생님입니다.
Hello. I’m your teacher for Korean.
o In this lesson we will focus on the Korean
alphabets and learn simple words to make
with them.
o By the end of this lesson, you will be able to
write your name, and a few words in Korean
as well as read them.
3. Introduction
• Korean alphabets have a total of 19
consonants and 21 vowels. Don’t worry, we’ll
learn them slowly.
• One thing to note is that the alphabets in
Korean are very different from the ones we
have in English. Korean alphabets have only
phonetics, i.e. only as sounds.
4. Consonants
As you can see, these are
the consonants of Hangeul.
They exist as sounds.
In this picture however it is
mentioned as “giyok,
nieum” etc.
The reason for that is you
cannot pronounce it s “gi,
ni” etc. Because they
cannot be solely
pronounced the “yeok,
ieum, etc” are added to it.
There are also double
consonants, that give a
more stressed sound.
5. Vowels
As you can see there
are these different
vowels and
combinations of them.
The one thing you
have to remember
while writing hangeul
is the longest line
represents the
position.
I’ll elaborate this more
on the upcoming
slides.
6. How to write hangul?
• Unlike other languages, hangul has something
called Character Placement.
• As the name suggests, character placement
determines the position of both consonants
and vowels.
• A very important rule in this is to remember
that Consonant comes first, followed by a
vowel.
7. Character
placement
As you can see here, the
consonant comes first,
followed by a vowel.
Remember when I told
the longest line
represents position?
If the vertical line of the
vowel is longer, it is
positioned at the side of
the consonant. If
horizontal line is longer,
it is positioned below
the consonant.
8. Conclusion
• So this is the end of the very basic lesson in
Korean. Using this lesson, you can now write
your name, names of your friends and family
and also read them.
• My name in Korean is 수간티. What’s yours?
