The HSK is China's standardized test of Mandarin Chinese proficiency for non-native speakers. It tests listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. There are 6 levels from basic to advanced. Levels 1-2 focus on pinyin and characters, while levels 3-6 use only characters. Passing HSK level 2 demonstrates a grasp of basic Chinese through 300 vocabulary words and simple communicative tasks. The test takes around 2 hours and assesses skills learned in a year of Chinese study. The HSK can be used for study abroad applications, academic credits, and employment purposes to evaluate Chinese language abilities.
