COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES
I. DESARROLLO DEL TEMA
1.1. Competencia a desarrollar
Identifica los adverbs of manner asi como los adjetivos comparativos.
1.2. Contenidos a desarrollar
Let's work on adverbs of manner!

Tom drove carefully along the narrow road.
How did Tom drive? Carefully!
In what way did Tom drive? Carefully!
Compare:
Tom is a careful driver.
Here, careful is an adjective and gives more information about what kind of driver
Tom is. Adjectives usually follow the verb “to be” and come before a noun.
How can we make adverbs?
Usually, we make adverbs by adding “ly” to the end of an adjective.
Examples:
nice nicely
clear clearly
Sometimes, we must change the “y” at the end of the adjective and add “ily” to make
the adverb.
Examples:
heavy heavily
lazy lazily
Be careful! Some adjectives end in “ly” and are NOT adverbs.
Examples:
She is a lovely woman.

A.- Choose the right verb
B.- Read and mark true ( T ) or false ( F ).
Sam, an unemployed piano tuner, said it was only the second thing he had ever won in
his life. The first thing was an Afghan blanket at a church raffle when he was 25 years old. But
this was muchbigger: it was $120,000! He had won the Big Cube, a state lottery game. To win,
a contestant must first guess which number a spinning cube will stop on. The cube has six
numbers on it: 1X, 10X, 50X, 100X, 500X, and 1000X. If he is correct, the contestant mustthen
guess which of two selected variables is going to be greater. So, just guessing which number
appears on the cube does not guarantee that you will win anymoney.
Sam correctly guessed 1000X, but he still had to choose between two variables. One
variable was the number of cars that would run the stop sign at Hill Street and Lake Avenue in
six hours. The other variable was the number of times that a teenage boy would change TV
channels in a three-hour period. This was a toughdecision.
1.- Sam was a teacher. T - F2.-
He was 25 when he won a blanket. T - F3.-
It was the fourth time he had won a prize T - F 4.- It
was an easy decision T - F

16. READING
A. Read the postcard and decide if the sentences below are true (T) or false (F) .
Dear Brenda,
I’m having a wonderful time here! We’re on a lovely island in the Cyclades, called
Santorini. The hotel is nice and quiet. It’s got a very big swimming-pool. The weather’s
hot and sunny although it rained yesterday. Right now, I’m sitting outside a café by the
sea. Sheila’s snorkelling as usual. Tom’s looking for some shells to take home. Dad’s
visiting some ancient ruins on the island. I think it’s boring. Mum’s buying some
souvenirs at the market. I don’t like it because it’s too noisy. We go to restaurants nearly
every night for dinner. My favourite one is by the sea. My mum and dad always order
sea-food but I never do - it’s horrible. I always order souvlaki-it’s so delicious.
That’s all for now. See you next Friday.
Love,
Laura
