This document summarizes the relocation of the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works project in Hong Kong, which will involve constructing caverns underground and relocating sewage treatment facilities. The $811 million project is led by the Drainage Services Department and AECOM Asia Company Limited, with the main contractor being China State Joint Venture. Extensive use of BIM and other technologies are planned over the 13-year, multi-phase project to facilitate planning, design, construction and safety training while minimizing disruptions to local residents.

Project Background and Challenges
Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW) is the largest secondary sewage
treatment works in Hong Kong.
It occupies 28 hectares of land and serves a population of about 630,000 in
Sha Tin and Ma On Shan Districts, producing 340,000m3 of sewage per day.
The future cavern complex for the relocated STSTW will be the largest of its
type ever built in Hong Kong. It needs to be implemented in stages.

Modular Integrated Construction (MiC)
MiC is an innovative construction method whereby free‐standing
integrated modules are manufactured in factory and transported to
site for installation.
A typical process of MiC goes as follows:
Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA)
DfMA is a design approach that aims to ease of
manufacture and efficiency of assembly of a product.
With the benefits of DfMA, the construction work
can be delivered with higher quality, lower cost and
