Haul-SNS is a wireless navigation and collision avoidance system for open-pit mines that uses GPS and sensors to track the location of heavy equipment vehicles in real-time. It calculates a virtual safety zone around each vehicle and alerts operators visually and audibly if another vehicle enters that zone, reducing the risk of accidents. The system also includes proximity sensors and a central control station to monitor vehicle movements across the entire mine site.

1. Open pit mining involves
simultaneous and coordinated
operation of many HEMMs &
other equipments in close
proximity. Protecting these huge
sized mining equipments in
operation against collision is essential.
Accidents in open pit mines occur due to -
l Operators’ poor visibility around the
HEMMs.
l Failure to detect approaching
vehicles or equipments, esp
during night time operation.
l Fatigued/careless driving by operators
l Failure to detect presence of human beings working
close to the HEMMs (e.g. Dumpers).
Haul-SNS is an automatic mine wide wireless
navigation system that provides a comprehensive
solution to the problems mentioned above; enabling
the operator to avoid a collision using the advanced
visualization provided in the cabin; resulting -
Ø Reduction in Number ofAccidents/ Fatalities
Ø Reduction in Equipment Damage
Ø Repair Cost
Ø Real Time SafetyAwareness
HAUL-SNS captures the current location,
movement pattern of each operating HEMMs to
calculate a virtual safety zone around each vehicle
and communicates these information to all other
operating equipments within a radial distance of
100m. Based on these data the
HaulSNS unit in each equipment
calculates probability of a collision
and informs the operator audio-
visually.
Haul-SNS system comes with cabin
mounted multi-function interactive display
for -
u Safe NavigationalAssistance
u Production Management
u Camera Visualization
u Proximity Warning
- thus eliminating the need for multiple display and
avoiding distraction to the operator
Haul-SNS system comes with built-in
Laser Proximity Warning System (LPWS), which is
capable of detecting static or mobile objects in the
path of the vehicle from a distance of 20 meters.

2. Haul-SNS Operation
•
The system captures the real time location with accurate heading/ orientation of the HEMM (e.g. Dumper) along
with other sensors placed in HEMM and communicates this information with other vehicles operating within a
adjustable range of 100m using ad-hoc inter-vehicular wireless network.
• Central Processing Unit & Visual display -
Computes data from own vehicle and other surrounding vehicles to know if there exists any possibility of a
collision and generate alert accordingly.
The touchscreen visual display inside the cabin enables the operator to dynamically see other operating
vehicle’s (HEMMs, small vehicles) real time location, distance from self HEMM, direction of movement with
respect to its own movement pattern.
• Central Control Station -
It will be placed in a remote location from where the mine managers can see the HEMM’s real time location and
movement pattern. In case of emergency they may communicate with the operator directly or take other
necessary actions and vice-versa.

Proximity Detection
Each HEMM fitted with Haul-
SNS System creates its own
virtual safety zone for safe
navigation. If any other vehicle
comes within this safety zone
the Haul-SNS system analyzes
the real possibility of collision &
alerts the operator.
Haul-SNS is integrated with
Laser Proximity Warning
System (LPWS) fitted at the
front/rear of the dumper/ HEMM,
capable of detecting any object
from a distance of 20 meters
away (adjustable).
LPWS as well as Haul-SNS
generates external audio-
visual alerts outside the
dumper upon detection of any
threatening objects along the
path of the vehicle.
T h e i n t e g r a t e d M o t i o n
Detection Unit (MDU) detects
any moving objects around the
vehicle in Pre-start condition.
The MDU units can be installed
inside the chassis of the vehicle
also to detect working human
beings while the ignition has
been turned on.
Small Vehicles are equipped
with GPS and Wireless
Communication capability
which enables seamless
communication with the
HEMMs. If a small vehicle
comes within the virtual safety
zone of the HEMM, the Haul-
SNS generates audio visual
alert to the operator.

Comparison with other systems
•
Open Pit mine.
◊ Camera do not generate any alerts, the operator must manually decipher a collision scenario
◊ Camera shows the immediate environment, e.g. dark, dusty, foggy condition will only depict the same
◊ Maintenance of camera based system in the mines is very difficult in the long run
◊ Multiple visual from multiple camera will only distract the operator
• RADAR systems give only LED based obstacle detection signals in small range (10m), also leaves the operator with
little or no reaction time. Long range radar system operates in higher frequency 24GHz or 77 Ghz, which requires special
license from Govt. of India for commercial usage .
• Graphical Display System: Other available systems with Graphical Display uses a Circular Safe Zone around the
vehicle, leading to uneven detection pattern with respect to the rectangular shape of the vehicle. It generates false
alarms in normal mining operation. The following non-threatening situations also generate alert -
1) Vehicles passing in opposite direction;
2) Vehicles parked in side by side condition;
3) Harmless static objects present outside the path of the vehicle.
Conventional Camera only system can not provide comprehensive solution to the collision problems in
