2. What I Want To Make
I want to make a short film that transitions into a music video/a music
video that works as a soundtrack to a short film. The track I want to use
in particular is ‘rock + roll’, from EDEN’s 2016 album, “i think you think
too much of me”. It’s an alternative rock song, with dejected lyrics
about being alone and dealing with inner turmoil.
I have an emotional connection to the song, and feel as though I can
use that to put passion into the project in areas that I wouldn’t
normally be able to do with a project about something I aren’t as
connected to.
The short film/music video will be urban and similar to his aesthetic,
perhaps even including film grain etc.
4. Konstantin
• Famously (360k subscribers) known for shooting music videos for famous
YouTuber KSI and other influencers, like Randolph
• Started with DSLR, but has moved onto bigger and better gear through hard work
and creativity
• Born and raised in Russia, now lives in the UK (London)
• Begins by creating a document with all of his ideas, then structures his ideas into
a full video using existing products, mood boards, storyboarding etc.
• Began by filming, editing, lighting, sound designing etc. all by himself
• Now directs and edits, leaving the rest of the crew to help make his vision a
reality
• Prefers to shoot on location, with practical effects and then adding minimal VFX
to boost the visuals
5. Darious Britt
• Matured filmmaker, known for sharing his tips and experiences with his
audience of 380k online
• Doesn’t use huge amounts of expensive gear, instead uses affordable kit
e.g. Canon 60D, cheap audio equipment (Rode Video Mic Pro and so on),
Neewer Slider, Aputure lights etc.
• Has won awards at small festivals, as well as making films from different
genres (Drama, Documentary etc.)
• Works as a DP, sound designer/recordist, director, producer and even
sometimes actor
• Has a signature style to his videos, shooting back and forth from his studio
room on a wide angle lens, to his B-roll and other clips etc.
6. Peter McKinnon
• Primarily a photographer, but also a filmmaking YouTuber (with 4.26
million subscribers), Peter teaches his audience various tips and tricks
about photography, videography and editing in his vlogs
• Has his own store of equipment including cine-cameras, DSLRs, lenses,
lights, microphones, gimbals etc.
• Collaborates with other famous filmmaking YouTubers, like Matti Haapoja
etc.
• Loves coffee (and taking it with him wherever he goes while filming it as it
“brings along about 3 minutes of content if I ever need it”)
• Has his “bucket shot” on a Canadian coin because of how good it is at
representing the beauty of Canada
7. EDEN
• 24 year-old ‘alternative rock’ artist from Dublin, Ireland
• A lot of songs refer to relationships and his lyrics tend to be fairly sombre and
depressingly reflective
• Rarely stars in his music videos, instead allowing short films to unfold, the
happenings relating to his lyrics and music
• Videos tend to be very aesthetically pleasing with dulled yet colourful visuals with
a film look to them
• Often has a similar colour scheme in each video
• Big fan of Rihanna, inspired by Freddie Mercury, MJ, Hans Zimmer, Kendrick
Lamar etc.
• Plays guitar, piano, drums, violin
• Began making music at the age of “7 or 8”, first performing live when he was “13
or 14” in a band with his friends
8. Hayden Pederson, North Borders (Mike) and 7th Era (Liam)
• Group of Australian friends/photographers who take photos and b-roll
together
• I love their photography styles and their videos/b-roll
• They travel all over the world, competing in “photography battles” where
they see who can take the best photos setting specific rules (like only a
certain lens etc.) and the time at which to be back at the meeting place by,
with the audience being the judge of each photo as they are put on
Instagram anonymously (so that the audience don’t know who they’re
voting for and cannot be biased)
• Their subscriber counts range from 876k to 155k, but tend to end up in
each other’s content which are all fairly similar
• Constantly coming up with new ideas for photography, e.g. – flare
photography, blazing fire photography and even sand photography etc.
9. Andrew Goodwin (music video theory)
5 aspects to a music video:
• 1. ‘Thought trough beat’ (what the lyrics mean in your head) – analyse the
music structure itself, the voice of the artist, the story artist is trying to tell
with the song
• 2. Relationship between song and visuals: illustrate (shots showing the
meaning of the lyrics/song in its genre). Disjuncture (meaning of the song is
irrelevant to the music video). Amplify (the images are shown repeatedly
throughout the music video).
• 3. Narrative and performance of a song: Goodwin believed that the artist/s
being in the music video was important, to make the performances within
(if any) were believable
• 4. Technical structure of a music video: Goodwin’s theory suggests that the
technical aspects (e.g. mise-en-scene, Special FX, editing, additional audio,
lighting and so on) “hold the music video together”
• 5. “Star Image” (camera shots revolving around the musician): Andrew
Goodwin believed that “star image” was vital to the marketing aspect of a
music video, making it more appealing to fans if the musician is in it
themselves and how they are presented

11. Research Targets
• To analyse EDEN’s official music videos for other songs of a similar
genre/tone/mood in greater detail
• Research his music’s demographic, EDEN himself and what inspires
his music
• Shooting Flat & Colour Grading (to achieve a colour scheme similar to
his general aesthetic)
• Look into other existing products from other artists, e.g. SAD! –
XXXTentacion (has short film aspects as well as being a music video)
as well as regular music videos and
• Set up surveys to establish the projects’ demographic and thus who
to aim the music video at
• Interview people who fall within the demographic determined by the
surveys
