The document compares the institutions behind the films Interstellar and Kung Fury. Interstellar was produced by three major studios, cost $165 million to make, and grossed $675 million. Kung Fury was produced by the little-known Laser Unicorns Lampray for only $630,019. While Interstellar's studios like Legendary Pictures are well established, Kung Fury was Laser Unicorns' first film and was crowd-funded. Both films found critical success but Kung Fury was viewed as the more successful production given its acclaim and low budget.
3. Question 1: What are the main institutions for
each of the films
• Interstellar- Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary
Pictures
• Kung Fury- Laser Unicorns Lampray
4. Question 2: How much money was used to
produce each film?
• Interstellar- 165 million dollars
• Kung Fury- 630,019 dollars
5. How much money was made by each of the
films?
• Interstellar- 675 million dollars
• Kung Fury- N/A
6. How well known are the production
companies?
• Interstellar- Legendary Pictures – Very well known and respected
production companies that has produced many high budget and
blockbuster films in the past that have been well received by critics.
These include the recent Batman series and Jurassic World
• Kung Fury- Laser Unicorns Lampray- Its first film that was created
through crowd funding and a small starting budget. Almost entirely
unknown and unrecognised internationally.
7. Differences between the films in terms of
institutions
• Interstellar has three main institutions that distributed and created
the film while Kung Fury had only one. Furthermore the three main
institutions most likely had hundreds of people working for them
while Laser Unicorns only had a small team of dedicated members.
• Also Laser Unicorns made the film on an originally small budget and
received crowd funding while interstellar most likely received millions
in funding by companies.
8. Similarities between the films in terms of
institutions
• The similarities between the two are very lacklustre with almost no
semblance appearing between them other than the international
success that was enjoyed by both. This was because at the Cannes
Film Festival, Kung Fury was recognised and celebrated well while
Interstellar was already well known for its massive advertising
campaign.
9. What other films have the production
companies made?
• Legendary Pictures has made films like the recent Batman series of
films and Jurassic World which received critical acclaim by many as
being excellent films and has a long history of being a good
production company that has the ability to make high quality films.
• Laser Unicorns Lampray however has made no previous films and so
was being judged off this film that like Interstellar received high
critical acclaim
10. What genre of film does the company usually
produce?
• Legendary Pictures has made many different films but appears to be
dominated by action which is a step different than Interstellar which
can be considered a thriller. This however does not function into the
quality of the movie as they have a lot of experience over many
genres.
• Laser Unicorns Lampray on the other hand most likely only has
experience with student films which should impact future films.
11. What audience do each of the institutions
appeal to
• Legendary Pictures appears to appeal to a more adult audience most
likely around the age of 18-30 with more action and focused
storylines appearing within they movies.
• Laser Unicorns Lampray is most likely targeting this similar audience
as it offers similar tropes as Legendary Pictures but is much more
focused on the action and comedy aspects of the film that would not
be as well understood by a younger audience.
12. Which institution is more successful in your
opinion?
• I believe that Laser Unicorns Lampray was more successful because it
was able to make a critically acclaimed film on crowd funding that has
been internationally recognised while Legendary Pictures was able to
make another great film in its record it can be said that it was one of
the less popular ones that they had made with Jurassic World
completely outselling it.
