ABOUT THE
Diplomatic Training Programs
Working closely with Foreign Ministries and Embassies, IMI customizes training programs aimed at enhancing
diplomatic effectiveness. IMI tailors curriculum, simulations, and site visits to meet the specific needs of each group
and provide participants with a wider range of diplomatic skills and tools.
Skills Institutes
Skills Institutes are two-day professional development workshops that provide both practical skills and theoretical
knowledge in a range of topics related to intercultural relations. Past topics have included Washington Diplomatic
Tradecraft, Personal and Organizational Security in a Global Age, and Gaming Simulations and Experiential Exercises
for Intercultural Training.
Annual Conference on Intercultural Relations
IMI’s annual conference convenes a diverse group of professionals, academics, and scholars from different sectors for
networking and exchange of best practices in intercultural relations. Our emphasis on experiential learning provides
conference participants with a toolkit of resources to apply to their own work.
The Intercultural Management Quarterly
The Intercultural Management Quarterly (IMQ) is a publication aimed at bettering intercultural dynamics within
global organizations by presenting current approaches to communication, leadership, and management. Practitioners,
academics, and scholars use IMQ as a forum to share their expertise, best practices, and research.
Other Intercultural Training
IMI offers intercultural training programs that prepare employees at every level of an organization to perform across
geographic, linguistic, and cultural divides. These trainings offer solutions to issues like relocation, working in virtual
teams, multicultural/national workforce management, and negotiation across culture.
For more than 50 years, the Intercultural Management Institute (IMI)--formerly the Business Council for International
Understanding (BCIU) Institute--has worked to promote cultural understanding through innovative and dynamic
intercultural training. Based at American University’s School of Professional & Extended Studies, IMI provides participants
with tools for effective communication, negotiation and leadership across cultures. IMI prepares professionals across
sectors to recognize and manage cultural differences, turning them into competitive advantages. IMI training programs
and skills institutes can be taken for-credit or not-for-credit.
