1. SHOT 1
This is the first shot of the music video which is accompanied by the sound of a
school bell, this is relevant to this shot as it shows the school in the background. In
addition to this fits well with the title of the song known as “young, dumb and
broke” which is relevant to some students within a school.
2. SHOT 2
This second shot also links with the first; being within a school. The sound from the previous
shot then transitions into a male voice projecting his voice over the speakers. “attention
students, this is your last announcement for the semester” which links in with the whole school
theme, leading the audience to think that the song is about a journey of a student.
3. SHOT 3
This is the shot that finally shows the male who is projecting his voice over the speaker to the
students. This voice over is also with the tune of the song which introduces it to the audience.
This is quite a slow tune which is a binary opposite of how positive and bold the speaker is.
4. SHOT 4
This shot is a split shot of two opposite colours; white and yellow. These different colours are
both opposites however doesn’t seen as relevant to the song, except being the walls of a
school. The shadows shown on the walls can symbolise the ‘broken’ concept of the person
Khalid is singing about.
5. SHOT 5
This shot is significant and makes the audience focus on the middle of the hall which is
projected with lights showing that it is the main point of the shot. This is another similar shot
as it is a school hall which links with what the male is talking about.
6. SHOT 6
These two shots that are next to each other in the sequence
of the music video are similar of students talking with their
peers. This links with the song which talks about the life of an
individual who is ‘young, dumb and broke’.
7. SHOT 7
This is the first shot that shows the singer within his music video, as well as lip syncing the
song. His passion is shown through his body language, however seeing this male focused
on at first, this could be a stereotype for black people within this type of environment who
doesn’t have a smooth experience.
8. SHOT 8
This is the last shot within the 30 second mark, with this girl looking interested in what Khalid is
doing and singing about. This shot slightly shows an opposite of what is being sung about, she is
one of the first characters that is showing the opposite of what Khalid is talking about. In
addition to this she looks as though she doesn’t fit within the environment.
