Conflict Resolution in Groups Essay
Conflict Resolution in Groups
Conflict resolution has been researched, analysed and discussed for many years; however, it is only until recently that psychologists have gotten
involved on a wider scale. Up until then the study of relations has more or less been the preserve of political scientists, historians and professionals
such as lawyers and diplomats. Much of the social science research has therefore been based on the previous; therefore the theories developed give a
much deeper insight to the psychological aspects of conflict resolution. In order to discuss conflict resolution, conflict needs to be defined.
Chambers (2003) defines conflict is as " a violent collision: a struggle or contest: a battle: a mental struggle "(pg....show more content...
Furthermore, this example can also be taken to on to a parent and a child. Usually in children in their teens will show some slight rebellion to the
parent's authority, which does cause conflict, suffice to say the resulted conflict is not one, which cannot be resolved or removed. The conflict may
arise over curfews or other social aspects of the child's life. In many cases a compromise is reached therefore removing the conflict point. However,
this would mean that the parent surrenders a slight portion of his authority or power, but still retains the majority of it.
Conflict resolution has been widely discussed because there are so many different situations in which conflict arises. A very large part of conflict
resolution can take place between ethnic groups, minority and majority (ethnic) groups and between state and minority ethnic groups. Eriksen (1993)
related conflict resolution to ethno–cultural factors, which he defined as 'a group of people who firmly believe that they are ethically and/ or culturally
distinct from the rest of the population (pg.XX). The relationship between ethno–cultural majority and minority groups in different societies has shown
that they are very prone to conflict. These conflicts seem 'deep–rooted' and 'intractable' due to the fact that

The Dynamics of Conflict Resolution
A Practioner's Guide
Bernard S. Mayer
Chapter One
The Nature of Conflict
We all are of two minds about conflict. We say that conflict is natural, inevitable, necessary, and normal, and that the problem is not the existence of
conflict but how we handle it. But we are also loath to admit that we are in the midst of conflict. Parents assure their children that the ferocious
argument the parents are having is not a conflict, just a "discussion." Organizations will hire facilitators to guide them in strategic planning, goal
setting, quality circles, team building, and all manner of training, but they shy away from asking for help with internal conflicts. Somehow, to say that
we are in conflict is...show more content...
If I believe us to have incompatible interests, and act accordingly, then I am engaging you in a conflict process whether you share this perception or not.
Conflict as Feeling
Conflict also involves an emotional reaction to a situation or interaction that signals a disagreement of some kind. The emotions felt might be fear,
sadness, bitterness, anger, or hopelessness, or some amalgam of these. If we experience these feelings in regard to another person or situation, we feel
that we are in conflict–and therefore we are. As a mediator, I have sometimes seen people behave as if they were in great disagreement over profound
issues, yet I have not been able to ascertain exactly what they disagreed about. Nonetheless, they were in conflict because they felt they were. And in
conflicts, it does not take two to tango. Often a conflict exists because one person feels in conflict with another, even though those feelings are not
reciprocated by or even known to the other person. The behavioral component may be minimal, but the conflict is still very real to the person
experiencing the feelings.
Conflict as Action
Conflict also consists of the actions that we take to express our feelings, articulate our perceptions, and get our needs met in a way that has the
potential for interfering with someone else's ability to get his or her needs met. This conflict

A new director decides to reorganize the department you work in. This reorganization comes about without input from the employees and many of the
nurses that you oversee are feeling resentful of the change. As a nurse leader, identify factors that may lead to conflict and ways you can manage them.
Wherever there are people the ability for conflict exits. Conflict is a disagreement, opposition or clash. It can affect the person emotionally, physically
and specially. It can result in a fight, discord and division. Conflict can be used to motivate; however it can be destructive and should be dealt with.
According to McElhaney (n.d) nurses experience six major areas of conflict. This scenario depicts one of those areas.
1. People who have...show more content...
3. Communication may be misunderstood and body language misconstrued (Cardillo, 2011). To confront this type of conflict, someone must be willing
to speak out. Once during my 360 degree review, I received feedback that my team members felt devalued and that they were not being listened to
because often times I continued typing when they came into the office; even though I coherently responded to the questions. After receiving this
feedback, anytime someone comes into my office, I would sit on my hands to ensure that I pay attention and not type.
When verbal communication and body language is misunderstood, the conflict must be confronted, discussed and a change must be made or an
explanation given. Accommodating to meet the needs of promotes harmony and gains credits that can be used at a later date. 4. A nurse's personal
space is often invaded by other staff members, physicians, and patients. Crowded conditions and constant interruption can lead to conflict.
In this situation, I would use a combination strategy of face–to–face meeting, collaboration and benchmarking. I would start with a face to face meeting
with the individual to get his/her input as to how to better design/arrange the work area to reduce stress and interruptions. I would also research what
other hospitals have done in this situation and implement best practice. Then I would follow–up with the employee to ensure the implemented changes

Conflict Resolution
The nature of a work team makes them vulnerable to conflicts and disagreements. Because people carry the weight of personal values, experiences
and beliefs into the work team, there is always the possibility that conflict will arise. That is why recognizing the signs and source of conflict will help
understand the role of conflict in the work team. Here is list of signs of conflicts that the work team should be aware of:
1.Anger, irritability, sarcasm
2.Without holding of, or willingness to share information needed to do the task
3.Lack of enthusiasm
4.Avoidance of responsibility
5.Difficulty participating in group discussion or decisions
6.An unwillingness to cooperate

Van Slyke (1999) claimed that conflict and its resolution are complicated issues because there are many factors, influencing it, and these may include
the nature and magnitude of the conflict.
Recognizing the signs and sources of conflict, and using the methods to analysis conflict is essential in understanding conflict. One approach to
conflict analysis and resolution is known as the 4Rs Method, according to Engleberg et al (2003). This method has four steps, each of which is
summarized with a word beginning wit the letter "R".
В•Reason. In this step, the causes or reasons for the conflict are explored and openly, yet respectfully, discussed.
В•Reactions. In this step, team members look at their own reactions to the conflict. If those reactions are destructive, rather than constructive,
individuals can self–correct, and take the necessary steps to recommit to team success.
В•Results. If the conflict is not resolved, what might happen? How might the team work together to resolve the conflict in a constructive manner?
В•Resolution. Which approach to conflict resolution could be used to effectively resolve the conflict? (p.154)
Recognizing and analyzing conflict is the key element in understanding conflict; which in turn, will assist in conflict resolution. Remember while
struggling to understand conflict, conflict is an integral part of work teams; whether, it is constructive or destructive.

A group can only be called a team if the members are actively working together toward a common goal. A team must have the capability to set goals,
make decisions, solve problems, and share responsibilities. For a team to be successful, trust must be earned between its members by being
consistent and reliable (Temme & Katzel, 2005). When more than one person is working on a particular task, inconsistent views or opinions
commonly arise. People come from different backgrounds and live through different life experiences therefore, even when working towards a common
goal, they will not always see eye to eye. Major conflict that is not dealt with can devastate a team or organization (Make Conflict Work, 2008). In
some situations, conflict can...show more content...
The idea of conflict under this view brings to mind chaos, heated emotion, and high stress. The traditional mindset requires taking all necessary steps to
prevent and remove the source of the conflict that may be detrimental to the team. The human relations view understands that conflict is inevitable and
part of the natural process of interactions. The human relations view is a more neutral outlook, which allows conflict and is tolerant of its presents.
One that comes from this perspective expects conflict in a team setting and is more likely to resolve the issue when it arises rather than trying to
eliminate the source. The interactionist view considers conflict to be energizing and helpful in keeping constructive discussion going. The
interactionist view is a positive view that encourages opinions and expression of all members of an association. Conflict is considered a positive
influence towards change. Causes for Conflict Barbara Bowes discusses three major causes for conflict: different interests/goals, conflicting values, and
interpersonal styles (2008). Even though a team has the same ultimate goal, the intermediate steps to reach this goal may be unparallel. Imagine if Ray
Kroc, fast–food restaurateur, and a gourmet chef teamed up to open a restaurant. What conflicts might transpire? The team may have the same
definitive goal in mind, but the two would more than likely be dealing with the issue of quality versus convenience. The second

the organization. Perceptions play a great influence in conflict. Disagreement or conflict usually arises when each party has different perception of a
given situation. There are number of factors that influence one's perception. Different cultural backgrounds and previous experiences create varying
influences on how we deal conflicts (online training solution). It is sometimes difficult to break away from the cultural beliefs and values that someone
was brought up with. Unfamiliarity also of someone's cultural background can create negative perceptions. Pointing at someone when talking to him or

Essay on Conflict Resolution
Conflict Resolution Whenever there are people, there always will be conflict. Opinions vary, misunderstandings and miscommunications occur, and
people have different values and priorities. All of these things create conflict in our life and at work. The problem is not conflict itself, but rather
how we deal with it. As long as it is resolved effectively, conflict can lead to personal and professional growth. There is no universal accepted
definition of conflict. Conflict can be viewed as functional or dysfunctional depending on how each person perceives it, manages it and resolves it.

In spite of increased observation and frequent reorienting, patient A grew more confused and even combative. Nurse B decided it was necessary to
place the patient in restraints for his own safety. The next morning at shift change, Nurse B gave report to Nurse C, informing her of the events that
led to the patient being placed in restraints. Around lunchtime, Nurse C was called to the patient's room. As she entered, the patient's daughter
confronted her. She was very upset about her father being in restraints. Nurse C tried to deescalate the situation by explaining exactly why the patient
was in restraints. In spite of this explanation, the daughter became very irate and threatened to punch the nurse if she did not remove the restraints.
The nurse immediately left the room, notified security and documented the events. Typically, there are five style of dealing with conflict. These
include: 1. Competitive: These individuals take a firm stand and know what they want. This style can be useful when there is an emergency and a
decision needs to be made fast, 2. Collaborative: These individuals try to meet the needs of all people involved. They are cooperative and
acknowledge that everyone is important. This style is useful when it is necessary to bring together a variety of viewpoints to get the best solution, 3.
Compromising: These individuals prefer to find a solution that will at least partially satisfy everyone. Compromise is useful

Reflection On Conflict Resolution
Conflict Resolution Reflection Conflict is inevitable and occurs all around us all the time. Conflict is not about whether something is good or bad,
but what is important is how we deal with this conflict. There are many types of conflict and one prominent conflict that I remember in my life is an
intragroup conflict. This was in grade 10, when I and three others were working on a Business ED project. The conflict was that I had a really good idea
and I was expressing my opinion, but my groupmates were not listening and kept constantly interrupting or calling my idea stupid. This led to a
buildup of a lot of tension between us and therefore affected our teamwork as we ended up not working efficiently towards our goal of a good mark. The
resolution style I used for this particular conflict was avoidance. This is because eventually, I just let my idea go and just did as the other people in
my group said and suppressed my own opinions. This conflict was left unresolved and resulted in us getting a lower mark than expected in the
project. At this point, I was thinking of just submitting to their wants and letting my opinions get put to the side. Although I did not act like I was
angry on the outside, like most other avoiding individuals, I built up my anger by not releasing it, which in the end just went away. Also, I became
less verbal and let the other three lead rather than taking an active role in this project. One advantage of avoiding a conflict is that for a short–term, it
allows us to delay solving and facing the issue, giving us time to think about solutions. Another advantage is that individuals that avoid conflict tend
to help calm the atmosphere down and realize that the conflict will most likely resolve itself, which was also what I believed for my conflict.
However, this tends to make these individuals deny and avoid the conflict entirely, sometimes making it even worse. Also, avoiding a conflict leads to
the opinions and needs of those individuals get suppressed, which also happened to me. Avoiding this conflict led the situation to never get resolved,
and because of this, I still do not really talk to those individuals. So, for this intragroup conflict scenario, I used the conflict resolution

Conflict Resolution
Many people enjoy working or participating in a group or team, but when a group of people work together chances are that conflicts will occur.
Hazleton describes conflict as the discrepancy between what is the perceived reality and what is seen as ideal (2007). "We enter into conflicts
reluctantly, cautiously, angrily, nervously, confidently
– and emerge from them battered, exhausted, sad, satisfied, triumphant. And still many of us
underestimate or overlook the merits of conflict– the opportunity conflict offers every time it occurs" (Schilling, nd.). Conflict does not have to lead to
a hostile environment or to broken relationships. Conflict if resolved effectively can lead to a positive experience for everyone...show more content...
Keeping all these in mind can lead to the best solution to solve the conflict.
Change and Expectations People do not always adjust well to change. Oftentimes when change occurs, conflict will arise. The new boss on the job or
the new member of the team may be the change that brings a conflict. Expectations if not set clearly and held to standard can also lead to conflict
among the team. Expectations must be set from the beginning. Expectations must also be clear and it must be verified that each team member
understands the expectations. If a short coming on the expectations occurs, then action must be taken immediately. If no action is taken this could be
understood as silent approval and team members will believe that the expectation is no longer important or required. When conflict does occur, the five
models set out in The Thomas–Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument sets the standards for resolving the conflict. Avoidance Avoidance is defined as "an
act or practice of avoiding or withdrawing from something" (Merriam–Webster.com). Avoidance may not be the answer if the conflict directly affects
the team or the team's goal. Avoidance is usually used when the conflict is irrelevant, relationships are at stake, more important issues are pressing,
when one party is more emotionally involved, or when more information is needed (Culbertson, 2000). In avoidance the parties involved agree to place

Leadership And Conflict Resolution Skills Essay
It is the leader's role in the group to manage conflict. Discuss
A leader has a role that can impact others to be more operative in functioning to attain a common goal and maintain effective working relationships
amongst group members (Johnson & Johnson 2012). This makes leaders in groups considerably important in shaping individuals (Johnson & Johnson
2012). However, conflict arises in groups and becomes difficult to manage when a leader and the followers lack the skills to manage conflict as a team
(Johnson & Johnson 2012). Leadership and conflict resolution skills must exists between leaders and followers in order to manage conflict
(Johnson & Johnson 2012). Also, it is possible for followers to teach leaders how to lead and resolve problems since followers can play an active
role in building relationships amongst group members (Howell & Shamir cited in Johnson & Johnson 2012). Since followers and leaders both have
significant roles in accomplishing the group goals, they both have a role to manage conflict effectively as a group (Johnson & Johnson 2012). This
essay will discuss how leaders have an important role in managing conflict and likewise with followers having important roles in managing conflict.
Conflicts, the various types of conflicts that happen in groups and the reasons behind the conflicts will be mentioned followed by approaches that can
be taken to help manage struggles within groups. The methods can be used by leaders and followers in order to manage

Conflict Resolution
Throughout life people should consider developing integrated conflict management systems to prevent and resolve conflict and provide practical
guidelines for designing and implementing such systems. The principles identified in this document can be used to manage external conflict with
customers, clients and the public. Better understanding of people's personality types is the first step in resolving conflict. Group participation is
another area that deserves attention. Understanding the objective of the group will also help to strive towards a common goal, and help to dissolve

Conflict is detrimental to a group's ability to work together. Although conflict can never be completely avoided, most personality differences can be
worked around if you know how to identify them, understand how they affect the group and learn methods to avoid them. Thompson, Aranda, and
Robbins (2001) write about two main types of conflict. The first type of conflict is; emotional conflict, or sometimes called A–type conflict. This
conflict can threaten productivity. These personality types can take over a group. They bully the other members into accepting their point of view.
They can be overbearing, or use anger to overwhelm any opposition to their ideas. They can be so opinionated that no one else has a chance to speak
up or get their point across. The next type of conflict is; cognitive conflict, or sometimes called C–type conflict. This conflict usually revolves around
the merits of ideas or plans. Although disagreement can occur, this type of conflict can be used to stimulate creativity. Looking at a problem from
different points of view can assist the whole team in problem solving. The method is to attack the idea not the person. This type of conflict usually
benefits team functioning. The goal is to turn A–types personalities into C–types. There are several different ways of achieving that goal. To start with,
each team member must agree on a common plan. Duties should be divided evenly and all team members must hold each

Conflict Resolution Strategies
Conflict has long been viewed as negative, and is usually associated with things as trivial as an argument to something as extreme as war, and is
seldom seen as beneficial. In the team environment however, conflict can be very beneficial if recognized early and managed properly and can enhance
team performance as well as relationships between team members.
Conflict is inevitable as humans interact, because not everyone shares the same beliefs, values, opinions, level of education, expertise on a given
subject, and social or economical background, just to name a few. Most of us try to avoid conflict whenever possible because it makes us

Most companies today are team based at least to some extent. Whether a management team or some type of project team, there are teams almost
everywhere one goes. Typically, they provide some type of training for conflict resolution so that team members can handle those situations where
conflict comes up and allows them to deal with it within the team if possible. Ignoring conflict in any situation does not make the issue go away; in
fact, in most cases it makes things worse and can ultimately destroy a team or a relationship and keep them from reaching the goal. Ignoring conflict is
not managing it and should only be done there is no way to resolve the issue without some outside help. Remember that when creating a team charter,
the guidelines for conflict resolution should be included and agreed on by all team members. (McNamara, 2003)
Some types of conflict can be positive leading to outstanding results toward reaching the team's goal. Managing conflict correctly can increase
involvement from other team members who may have been reluctant to share thoughts or ideas due to a lack of knowledge or because they felt
inferior to other members of the team. Increased cohesion can also be realized when each member of the team feels that other team members value
their view or opinion. Conflict within a team can also bring about increased innovation and creativity. If team members are not afraid to think outside

Introduction
They are many concerns or reasons that causes conflicts in the workplace. It can be from poor communication, poor work ethics, personal issues, not
been a team player or sharing different views or values. All these factors contribute tremendously for staff members to have continuous conflicts. Being
a leader is my responsibility to resolve these conflicts and preventing these problems from escalating. In addition, it will be my leadership qualities that
I will portray, will ensure that conflicts will be resolved and everyone will work in love and unity.
The IOM that I choose to base my smart goal is working in inter–disciplinary and or inter–professional teams and how to deal with conflict resolution. I
work in a health care clinic in which I am a charge nurse who is responsible for 10 nurses and 8 Doctors. As a charge nurse my role and

conflicts. These conflicts are continuous because it is amongst nursing staff, doctors, and nursing team against management team. As a result, I am
caught in the middle dealing with all these problems and personalities.
As a charge nurse, I have to display leadership, communication and management skills, to promote change and to ensure that everyone works

Conflict Resolution and Peacemaking
Conflict can arise among different people in a variety of ways and at different levels of severity. When two or more people, groups, or countries
interact, their individual needs and goals may conflict. Conflict normally comes about over the pursuit of self–interests. The way that society tries to
prevent conflict is by establishing laws or guidelines that regulate the self–serving behaviors of individuals and groups (Meyers, 2009).
One major situation that can cause conflict is when a person feels they are being treated wrong. As defined, justice is giving out rewards in proportion

Good parenting is one key to preventing one's child from becoming a bully. Some children that have a harder time understanding coarse work or have

Bullies can pick out their easiest victims quickly. A bully may be the loud troublemaking student who comes from a harsh home life or he or she
may be the popular student who feels a need to remain superior among their peers and gain approval by belittling others. The only way for the bad
student or the popular student to feel comfortable is by demonstrating some sense of control over others. The bully will use threats to invoke fear
into his or her victim. Most of the time victims are afraid to tell on the bully. There are instances when telling on the bully does not accomplish any
changes and can even make matters worse for those being victimized. The victim may begin to feel like the bully is just being rewarded after a while,
and he or she may feel that their situation is hopeless

Throughout one's life, one establishes many relationships. Some are built upon, and become strong and unshakable, some are broken and left to
dissolve. While some are paved slowly and with love, blossoming to become something wonderful, others are blown apart – the pieces scattered, never
to be put back together again. Though these relationships vary, from professional to personal, they are all prone to encountering some form of conflict.
John Dewey has designed a problem solving sequence with 6 (six) steps, listed and explained below, to facilitate resolution of these conflicts.

How can we improve our shop's sales within the next three months?

The solution can be either a practical one, which would affect material gains or losses, or one based on value, which would fallow a goal that reflects

The solution must cause a 5% increase in sales, must be cost effective, and can not affect the quality of the products.

This is where the parties (in this case Max and George) "Brainstorm", or state as many solutions as they can think of. It is important to keep in mind,
however, that these solutions must conform to the criteria mentioned above.

What does conflict resolution mean to me? Conflict resolution is when an impartial or neutral person puts a plan into action to resolve and settle

It is extremely vital to the livelihood of a team for the team members to be able use conflict resolutions or reach out to another individual who has
conflict resolution skills.
Is conflict constructive or destructive? Conflict can be good for a team if the members involved in the conflict learn some type of lesson about the
issue. It also can create a solution for future problems with different individuals. It can create a sense of unity and fresh ideas on ways to resolve the
conflict. Conflict can also be a very destructive force to an organization if after all is said and done, conflict continues without a resolution. It creates
chaos instead of camaraderie and divides teams or different groups of people. What causes conflict? There are numerous reasons that conflict may arise
within a team. A team with many different people includes many different personalities, cultures, values, attitudes, needs, expectations, etc.
In order to resolve conflict it is very important to follow a few steps:
1. Analyze the reason for the disagreement.
2. Create several solutions or options for all parties involved.
3. Make sure all involved agree on the solution.
4. Implement the solution immediately, time is of the essence.
5. Follow up on the situation

Conflict Resolution in Groups Essay

  • 1. Conflict Resolution in Groups Essay Conflict Resolution in Groups Conflict resolution has been researched, analysed and discussed for many years; however, it is only until recently that psychologists have gotten involved on a wider scale. Up until then the study of relations has more or less been the preserve of political scientists, historians and professionals such as lawyers and diplomats. Much of the social science research has therefore been based on the previous; therefore the theories developed give a much deeper insight to the psychological aspects of conflict resolution. In order to discuss conflict resolution, conflict needs to be defined. Chambers (2003) defines conflict is as " a violent collision: a struggle or contest: a battle: a mental struggle "(pg....show more content... Furthermore, this example can also be taken to on to a parent and a child. Usually in children in their teens will show some slight rebellion to the parent's authority, which does cause conflict, suffice to say the resulted conflict is not one, which cannot be resolved or removed. The conflict may arise over curfews or other social aspects of the child's life. In many cases a compromise is reached therefore removing the conflict point. However, this would mean that the parent surrenders a slight portion of his authority or power, but still retains the majority of it. Conflict resolution has been widely discussed because there are so many different situations in which conflict arises. A very large part of conflict resolution can take place between ethnic groups, minority and majority (ethnic) groups and between state and minority ethnic groups. Eriksen (1993) related conflict resolution to ethno–cultural factors, which he defined as 'a group of people who firmly believe that they are ethically and/ or culturally distinct from the rest of the population (pg.XX). The relationship between ethno–cultural majority and minority groups in different societies has shown that they are very prone to conflict. These conflicts seem 'deep–rooted' and 'intractable' due to the fact that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. conflict resolution Essay The Dynamics of Conflict Resolution A Practioner's Guide Bernard S. Mayer Chapter One The Nature of Conflict We all are of two minds about conflict. We say that conflict is natural, inevitable, necessary, and normal, and that the problem is not the existence of conflict but how we handle it. But we are also loath to admit that we are in the midst of conflict. Parents assure their children that the ferocious argument the parents are having is not a conflict, just a "discussion." Organizations will hire facilitators to guide them in strategic planning, goal setting, quality circles, team building, and all manner of training, but they shy away from asking for help with internal conflicts. Somehow, to say that we are in conflict is...show more content... If I believe us to have incompatible interests, and act accordingly, then I am engaging you in a conflict process whether you share this perception or not. Conflict as Feeling Conflict also involves an emotional reaction to a situation or interaction that signals a disagreement of some kind. The emotions felt might be fear, sadness, bitterness, anger, or hopelessness, or some amalgam of these. If we experience these feelings in regard to another person or situation, we feel that we are in conflict–and therefore we are. As a mediator, I have sometimes seen people behave as if they were in great disagreement over profound issues, yet I have not been able to ascertain exactly what they disagreed about. Nonetheless, they were in conflict because they felt they were. And in conflicts, it does not take two to tango. Often a conflict exists because one person feels in conflict with another, even though those feelings are not reciprocated by or even known to the other person. The behavioral component may be minimal, but the conflict is still very real to the person experiencing the feelings. Conflict as Action Conflict also consists of the actions that we take to express our feelings, articulate our perceptions, and get our needs met in a way that has the potential for interfering with someone else's ability to get his or her needs met. • 3. Conflict Resolution Essay A new director decides to reorganize the department you work in. This reorganization comes about without input from the employees and many of the nurses that you oversee are feeling resentful of the change. As a nurse leader, identify factors that may lead to conflict and ways you can manage them. Wherever there are people the ability for conflict exits. Conflict is a disagreement, opposition or clash. It can affect the person emotionally, physically and specially. To confront this type of conflict, someone must be willing to speak out. Once during my 360 degree review, I received feedback that my team members felt devalued and that they were not being listened to because often times I continued typing when they came into the office; even though I coherently responded to the questions. After receiving this feedback, anytime someone comes into my office, I would sit on my hands to ensure that I pay attention and not type. When verbal communication and body language is misunderstood, the conflict must be confronted, discussed and a change must be made or an explanation given. Accommodating to meet the needs of promotes harmony and gains credits that can be used at a later date. 4. A nurse's personal space is often invaded by other staff members, physicians, and patients. Crowded conditions and constant interruption can lead to conflict. In this situation, I would use a combination strategy of face–to–face meeting, collaboration and benchmarking. I would start with a face to face meeting with the individual to get his/her input as to how to better design/arrange the work area to reduce stress and interruptions. I would also research what other hospitals have done in this situation and implement best practice. Then I would follow–up with the employee to ensure the implemented changes solved the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Conflict Resolution Essay Conflict Resolution The nature of a work team makes them vulnerable to conflicts and disagreements. Because people carry the weight of personal values, experiences and beliefs into the work team, there is always the possibility that conflict will arise. That is why recognizing the signs and source of conflict will help understand the role of conflict in the work team. Here is list of signs of conflicts that the work team should be aware of: 1.Anger, irritability, sarcasm 2.Without holding of, or willingness to share information needed to do the task 3.Lack of enthusiasm 4.Avoidance of responsibility 5.Difficulty participating in group discussion or decisions 6.An unwillingness to cooperate Conflicts are rooted in...show more content... Van Slyke (1999) claimed that conflict and its resolution are complicated issues because there are many factors, influencing it, and these may include the nature and magnitude of the conflict. Recognizing the signs and sources of conflict, and using the methods to analysis conflict is essential in understanding conflict. One approach to conflict analysis and resolution is known as the 4Rs Method, according to Engleberg et al (2003). This method has four steps, each of which is summarized with a word beginning wit the letter "R". В•Reason. In this step, the causes or reasons for the conflict are explored and openly, yet respectfully, discussed. В•Reactions. In this step, team members look at their own reactions to the conflict. If those reactions are destructive, rather than constructive, individuals can self–correct, and take the necessary steps to recommit to team success. В•Results. If the conflict is not resolved, what might happen? How might the team work together to resolve the conflict in a constructive manner? В•Resolution. Which approach to conflict resolution could be used to effectively resolve the conflict? (p.154) Recognizing and analyzing conflict is the key element in understanding conflict; which in turn, will assist in conflict resolution. Remember while

  • 6. Conflict Resolution Essay A group can only be called a team if the members are actively working together toward a common goal. A team must have the capability to set goals, make decisions, solve problems, and share responsibilities. For a team to be successful, trust must be earned between its members by being consistent and reliable (Temme & Katzel, 2005). When more than one person is working on a particular task, inconsistent views or opinions commonly arise. People come from different backgrounds and live through different life experiences therefore, even when working towards a common goal, they will not always see eye to eye. Major conflict that is not dealt with can devastate a team or organization (Make Conflict Work, 2008). In some situations, conflict can...show more content... The idea of conflict under this view brings to mind chaos, heated emotion, and high stress. The traditional mindset requires taking all necessary steps to prevent and remove the source of the conflict that may be detrimental to the team. The human relations view understands that conflict is inevitable and part of the natural process of interactions. The human relations view is a more neutral outlook, which allows conflict and is tolerant of its presents. One that comes from this perspective expects conflict in a team setting and is more likely to resolve the issue when it arises rather than trying to eliminate the source. The interactionist view considers conflict to be energizing and helpful in keeping constructive discussion going. The interactionist view is a positive view that encourages opinions and expression of all members of an association. Conflict is considered a positive influence towards change. Causes for Conflict Barbara Bowes discusses three major causes for conflict: different interests/goals, conflicting values, and interpersonal styles (2008). Even though a team has the same ultimate goal, the intermediate steps to reach this goal may be unparallel. Imagine if Ray Kroc, fast–food restaurateur, and a gourmet chef teamed up to open a restaurant. What conflicts might transpire? The team may have the same definitive goal in mind, but the two would more than likely be dealing with the issue of quality versus convenience. The second Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Conflict Resolution Essay Conflict Resolution Conflict is part of human existence. The world is filled with conflicts in all realms of life. Evidence of unresolved conflicts in greater scale are the chaos around the world that we hear and see from the daily world news. Everyday we experience some sort of conflict that are either insignificant or relatively important whether we are at home, at school, at a coffee shop, or at work....show more content... A recent conflict incident in San Diego involved a medical group paying $6 million to one of their doctors that was fired for whistle blowing, that turned around and sued the medical group for wrongful termination (10news.com). Conflicts are waste of resources, costly, and can inflict damage to the organization. Perceptions play a great influence in conflict. Disagreement or conflict usually arises when each party has different perception of a given situation. There are number of factors that influence one's perception. Different cultural backgrounds and previous experiences create varying influences on how we deal conflicts (online training solution). It is sometimes difficult to break away from the cultural beliefs and values that someone was brought up with. Unfamiliarity also of someone's cultural background can create negative perceptions. Pointing at someone when talking to him or her might not be considered rude to people from Asian countries, but it is typically offensive for Americans. An only child that grew up being the family's center of attention may sometimes find it difficult playing well with others. • 8. Essay on Conflict Resolution Conflict Resolution Whenever there are people, there always will be conflict. Opinions vary, misunderstandings and miscommunications occur, and people have different values and priorities. All of these things create conflict in our life and at work. The problem is not conflict itself, but rather how we deal with it. As long as it is resolved effectively, conflict can lead to personal and professional growth. There is no universal accepted definition of conflict. Conflict can be viewed as functional or dysfunctional depending on how each person perceives it, manages it and resolves it. (Iglesias & Vallejo, 2012) Working in the clinical setting, it is not uncommon to have conflict among nurses, doctors and patients. Nowadays, nurses not ...show more content... In spite of increased observation and frequent reorienting, patient A grew more confused and even combative. Nurse B decided it was necessary to place the patient in restraints for his own safety. The next morning at shift change, Nurse B gave report to Nurse C, informing her of the events that led to the patient being placed in restraints. Around lunchtime, Nurse C was called to the patient's room. As she entered, the patient's daughter confronted her. She was very upset about her father being in restraints. Nurse C tried to deescalate the situation by explaining exactly why the patient was in restraints. In spite of this explanation, the daughter became very irate and threatened to punch the nurse if she did not remove the restraints. The nurse immediately left the room, notified security and documented the events. Typically, there are five style of dealing with conflict. These include: 1. Competitive: These individuals take a firm stand and know what they want. This style can be useful when there is an emergency and a decision needs to be made fast, 2. Collaborative: These individuals try to meet the needs of all people involved. They are cooperative and acknowledge that everyone is important. This style is useful when it is necessary to bring together a variety of viewpoints to get the best solution, 3. Compromising: These individuals prefer to find a solution that will at least partially satisfy everyone. Compromise is useful Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Reflection On Conflict Resolution Conflict Resolution Reflection Conflict is inevitable and occurs all around us all the time. Conflict is not about whether something is good or bad, but what is important is how we deal with this conflict. There are many types of conflict and one prominent conflict that I remember in my life is an intragroup conflict. This was in grade 10, when I and three others were working on a Business ED project. The conflict was that I had a really good idea and I was expressing my opinion, but my groupmates were not listening and kept constantly interrupting or calling my idea stupid. This led to a buildup of a lot of tension between us and therefore affected our teamwork as we ended up not working efficiently towards our goal of a good mark. The resolution style I used for this particular conflict was avoidance. This is because eventually, I just let my idea go and just did as the other people in my group said and suppressed my own opinions. This conflict was left unresolved and resulted in us getting a lower mark than expected in the project. At this point, I was thinking of just submitting to their wants and letting my opinions get put to the side. Although I did not act like I was angry on the outside, like most other avoiding individuals, I built up my anger by not releasing it, which in the end just went away. Also, I became less verbal and let the other three lead rather than taking an active role in this project. One advantage of avoiding a conflict is that for a short–term, it allows us to delay solving and facing the issue, giving us time to think about solutions. Another advantage is that individuals that avoid conflict tend to help calm the atmosphere down and realize that the conflict will most likely resolve itself, which was also what I believed for my conflict. However, this tends to make these individuals deny and avoid the conflict entirely, sometimes making it even worse. Also, avoiding a conflict leads to the opinions and needs of those individuals get suppressed, which also happened to me. Avoiding this conflict led the situation to never get resolved, and because of this, I still do not really talk to those individuals. Essay about Conflict Resolution Conflict Resolution Many people enjoy working or participating in a group or team, but when a group of people work together chances are that conflicts will occur. Hazleton describes conflict as the discrepancy between what is the perceived reality and what is seen as ideal (2007). "We enter into conflicts reluctantly, cautiously, angrily, nervously, confidently – and emerge from them battered, exhausted, sad, satisfied, triumphant. And still many of us underestimate or overlook the merits of conflict– the opportunity conflict offers every time it occurs" (Schilling, nd.). Conflict does not have to lead to a hostile environment or to broken relationships. Conflict if resolved effectively can lead to a positive experience for everyone...show more content... Keeping all these in mind can lead to the best solution to solve the conflict. Change and Expectations People do not always adjust well to change. Oftentimes when change occurs, conflict will arise. The new boss on the job or the new member of the team may be the change that brings a conflict. Expectations if not set clearly and held to standard can also lead to conflict among the team. Expectations must be set from the beginning. Expectations must also be clear and it must be verified that each team member understands the expectations. If a short coming on the expectations occurs, then action must be taken immediately. If no action is taken this could be understood as silent approval and team members will believe that the expectation is no longer important or required. When conflict does occur, the five models set out in The Thomas–Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument sets the standards for resolving the conflict. Avoidance Avoidance is defined as "an act or practice of avoiding or withdrawing from something" (Merriam–Webster.com). Avoidance may not be the answer if the conflict directly affects the team or the team's goal. Avoidance is usually used when the conflict is irrelevant, relationships are at stake, more important issues are pressing, when one party is more emotionally involved, or when more information is needed (Culbertson, 2000). In avoidance the parties involved agree to place Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Although conflict can never be completely avoided, most personality differences can be worked around if you know how to identify them, understand how they affect the group and learn methods to avoid them. Thompson, Aranda, and Robbins (2001) write about two main types of conflict. The first type of conflict is; emotional conflict, or sometimes called A–type conflict. This conflict can threaten productivity. These personality types can take over a group. They bully the other members into accepting their point of view. They can be overbearing, or use anger to overwhelm any opposition to their ideas. They can be so opinionated that no one else has a chance to speak up or get their point across. The next type of conflict is; cognitive conflict, or sometimes called C–type conflict. This conflict usually revolves around the merits of ideas or plans. Although disagreement can occur, this type of conflict can be used to stimulate creativity. Looking at a problem from different points of view can assist the whole team in problem solving. The method is to attack the idea not the person. This type of conflict usually benefits team functioning. The goal is to turn A–types personalities into C–types.
