Theme Of Heroism In The Hunger Games
In the book The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins emphasizes the heroic qualities of the characters. The book is set in a dystopian society
where one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts are forced into an arena and need to fight for their life. In the paragraphs below I will be
discussing 6 of the many ways the author has depicted the heroic qualities of the characters Katniss, Thresh, and Peeta. These protagonist characters
demonstrate the qualities, heroism, love, strong willed, bravery, respect, affection, and, determination. The definition of ahero is someone a person
looks up to for their courage and bravery
In part two of The Hunger Games Katniss signifies her heroic qualities of love, affection, and bravery...show more content...
During the earlier part of that scene, Cato nearly kills Katniss but Thresh saves Katniss as he throws a stone a Cato's head and lets Katniss go. Thresh
is a hero as this is a sign of thanks and respect.
Katniss shows her persistence to win the game from the very start of the book to the very end. On page 205 Katniss quotes " Every step is an
effort but I refuse to stop. " this shows how pushes even though she will face obstacles. Katniss signifies Strength and dedication as she is not only
doing this for her but also for Prim and Rue. The Technique used is persistence. The reason why Katniss is a hero she strives toward her goal and
never gives up. Katniss is an inspiration to many people as she has the qualities of a hero. Katniss uses this quote to keep her determined to win and to
have a better life in District twelve.
Another heroic quality of Katniss is affection, love and determination. She shows these qualities through the quote " you're not going to die." " I
forbid it." Katniss uses the technique of dialogue and description. The effect that it has on us ( the reader ) is how she shows her love and generosity
towards Peeta. Katniss is determined to keep Peeta alive and has the urge to win.
Katniss's partner, Peeta also depicts the qualities of a hero. In the novel, Peeta Yells out Katniss "Run" he screams "Run". In this scene,

Essay On The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games – Essay By Lauren Wheeler Throughout the whole story of The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins' personal story plays a
major role in the events of the annual hunger games, and is a great influence on the personality and development of the two tributes from District 12
and their struggle to survive in the cruel, harsh arena. The story of the Hunger Games takes place in the destroyed nation of North America, which is
now Panem and contains twelve districts. These districts are ruled by the intimidating Capitol. The Hunger Games was created after the districts of
Panem had tried to rebel against the Capitol ultimately failing in the end. As punishment, each district would have to choose 2 tributes, one female and

The girl, whose name is Rue and Katniss decide to team up and work together to destroy the food stash of the stronger tributes called Careers,
which have also teamed up together. After successfully working out a plan, Katniss destroys the Careers food stash and runs to the area where
Rue and her have agreed to meet back up. On the way back, she witnesses Rue's death at the hands of a Career. In order to survive, she decides to
run even further out into the woods hoping to find a way to survive. While she's running, the Capitol then announced that both tributes from the
same district can win together. After this she finds Peeta, lying in the mud covered in leaves and sticks in an attempt to be camouflaged so none of
the tributes could find him. Katniss helps Peeta wash off and tends to a big cut on his leg which was given to him by one of the Careers. For the
next few days, the two hide in a cave allowing each other to rest and show one another love and affection, ultimately hoping to win over the Capitol.
After Peeta is knocked out by medication, Katniss makes the trek to the cornucopia where the Capitol is hosting what they call a feast, but it is
actually just a way to get all the remaining tributes to fight one another. After surviving a near death experience, Katniss makes her way back to the
cave. When she returns, Peeta is somewhat healed and they both make the long hike together to the cornucopia. Once they arrive, they see

Thematic Essay On The Hunger Games
Hunger Games– Thematic Analysis
The Hunger Games is a 2008 top selling science fiction novel by the American writer Suzanne Collins. Set in the dystopian, post–apocalyptic nation of
Panem, Suzanna Collins deals with many issues that each play vital roles in the novel, such as the inequality between the rich and poor and the
importance of appearances.
The inequality between the rich and poor is an integral theme highlighted by Suzanne Collins in the Hunger Games series. In Panem, wealth and
power are dominated by those living in the Capitol, and, as a result, there is a substantial imbalance between the lives of the affluent and that of the
poor. This disparity is between the lives of the rich and poor is apparent in countless aspects of their lifestyles, but undoubtedly the most notable isfood.
In the less wealthy districts, food is a luxury and extremely scarce, consequently, most...show more content...
In numerous crucial moments of the book, Collins hints that physical appearance and behaviour is crucial Katniss' survival in the games. Throughout
the novel, Katniss uses her physical appearance and her actions to manipulate how other citizens viewed her. For instance, during the reaping
ceremony (the place where the candidates of each district were picked for the 'games'), Katniss doesn't allow herself to cry in front of the camera
because she doesn't want to appear weak and incapable (thus a much easier target). Furthermore, at the opening ceremony of the 'games', Collins places
a lot of emphasis on Katniss ornate dress and ostentatious appearance, showing readers the significance physical appearance. Standing out from the rest
and hence trading attention has proved to be much more than just an egotistic attempt to gain recognition. Popular tributes are able to attract sponsors
who could provide items to those candidates during the games which prove to be vital to their

Identity and reality are both often skewed and/or compromised to meet the needs and wants of a person or platform. More often than not do people
and markets put on fronts to be perceived in a certain way to gain favor in the public eye. They adapt because they have to in order to stay afloat in
the ever changing world of fleeting beauty and immediate gratification. The world of Panem in The Hunger Games is not much different, in fact, it's
more similar than not. In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Collins uses construction and manipulation of the authenticity of the
characters to show that identity evolves to fit the demands of the prevailing reality.
Much of the Hunger Games is centered around portraying a certain image, or identity if you will. The capital manipulates the weaknesses in their
society and in their people to create an identity of unity and nationalism through the way they present the games to the districts of Panem. This idea of
appearing to be one thing but really being another is ingrained in the society of Panem. District 12, in particular, maintains this image of complacency
for the sake of survival, and Katniss is no exception to this.
To survive, Katniss practices stoicism where she manipulates her emotions to create the identity she needs. She has become accustom to this way of
living, camouflaging her actions and concealing her true emotions to protect not only herself but also the ones she loves (Prim in this instance). She is

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Essay
The Hunger Games novel written by Suzanne Collins reflects significant issues in the reality world nowadays which relate to the humanity, the poverty,
the violence,... It describes the issues through the characters and what happens in the story, and the most significant issue occurs throughout the novel
is the gap between rich and poor people. In the beginning of the novel, Suzanne Collins describes clearly the scene of the poverty, the terrible fear of the
12–district's villagers, in contrast to the wealthy of the Capitol's citizens. The inequality of social classes becomes the theme of the novel because of its
relation and the effects to the plots of the story. And the reason, which leads to that issue, is the policies of the dictatorship...show more content...
Children in District 12 have no chances for education and have to work as an adult in order to feed their family. Katniss has to hunt illegally and
even risk her life to get into the forest to find food for her family (Sparknotes, n.d.). Some other villagers are not able to hunt so that means
Katniss's family is luckier than many other families in the same district (Sparknotes, n.d.). When she is in the Capitol, the meal, which she is
having, makes her remember about the basic meal at home. "Chicken and chunks of oranges cooked in a creamy sauce laid on a bed of pearly
white grain, tiny green peas and onions, rolls shaped like flowers, and for dessert, a pudding the color of honey" (Collins, S., 2008, p.79). The
luxurious meal shows the significant different in living standard because of the various dishes in the meal in compare with a usual daily bread in
District 12. "I try to imagine assembling this meal myself back home" (Collins, S., p.79). At home, Katniss has to hunt for food, but here at the
Capitol, people just sit there, wait for the meal is ready to be served.
Besides the gap between the Capitol and District 12, the tesserae is the most recognizable system that reflects the inequality of the people in the same
district. The tributes are picked randomly but it seems like the poor children have more risk than the rich children. Poor children have to put their name
to the reaping

Argumentative Essay On The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins delineates that there are times when people believe that all hope is lost but only those who are strong
will persevere through their darkest moments. Suzanne Collins portrays the theme throughout the novel with the main protagonist, Katniss Everdeen,
as she struggles to endure her daily life and the annual Hunger Games. Collins displays the prodigious amount of persistence of Katniss Everdeen and
her comrade, Peeta Mellark, which allows them to survive throughout the Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen lives a life that is based on her ability to
survive long before she becomes a participant in the Hunger Games. The death of Katniss's father left Katniss to provide for her mother and her sister,

Katniss and Peeta were able to kill Cato. Katniss and Peeta encountered Cato on the Cornucopia as they escaped from the muttations. "Cato has
made a beeline for the Cornucopia, and without question I follow him. If he thinks it's the safest place, who am I to argue? " (Collins 327).
Katniss shot an arrow in which Peeta was able to push Cato off of the Cornucopia even though Peeta was bleeding from his leg, which resulted in
Cato being attacked by Muttations. Katniss and Peeta are not able to kill each other. The death of Cato leads Katniss and Peeta to kill each other,
however because they can not do so, they choose a double suicide in which they end up as the victors of the Hunger Games. "We both know they
have to have a victor. Yes, they have to have a victor. Without a victor, the whole thing would blow up in the Gamemakers' faces. They'd have failed
the Capitol. Might possibly even be executed, slowly and painfully while the cameras broadcast it to every screen in the country. If Peeta and I were
both to die, or they thought we were..." (Collins 339). As they were both about to die they heard "the frantic voice of Claudius Templesmith shouts
above them. "Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy–fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta
Mellark! I give you – the tributes of District Twelve!" (Collins 340). Collins showed that Katniss and Peeta were willing to kill themselves as opposed
to killing each

Theme The book, The Hunger Games, has one main theme throughout. Suffering and brutality as a form of entertainment. In Panem, a tribute's
suffering, physically and mentally, is used and prolonged as a form of entertainment for the people, mostly for those who live in the Capitol. The mind
set is that the more the tributes suffer, especially while battling one another, the more entertaining it becomes. At one time Katniss discussed what made
the Games successful and what didn't. The successes all had in common that they made it so that the tributes did not die immediately which would
limit the entertainment factor. Towards the end of the book, Cato did not die a quick death as he could have, he remained alive. Once the muttations

The movie 'The Hunger Games' directed by Gary Ross is an extraordinary fictional tale. A tale set in a futuristic dystopia society called 'Panem'. This
nation is divided into 12 districts and a capitol. Every year each district must offer two tributes a male and a female that must fight to the death until
there is one remaining tribute out of twenty–four, who later becomes a victor. An interesting character in the film is Katniss Everdene, the films
heroine. A District 12 citizen, katniss's will to survive and furious attitude is shown from the moment we first see her on screen. Throughout the games

the news has brought her. Katniss preformed well during the games, and upheld a persona leading up to the games. Together Katniss and Peeta, the
male tribute from district 12 forged a fake love for the satisfaction of the government. In a critical moment in the film after Peeta gets injured they
use their 'love' to receive medication, A single kiss helped them get the suplies they needed with a note attached reading "you call that a kiss".

Social Control and The Hunger Games Essay
The Hunger Games, a film based off of a novel written by Susan Collins, was released in March of 2012. The film, and the book it was based on,
chronicles the struggles of a girl named Katniss Everdeen, a girl who lives in a poverty stricken province or "District", until untimely circumstances
forces her to play in the Hunger Games, a gladiatorial like contest where children between the ages of 12 and 18 are forced to fight to the death. A
contest that was set up by an oppressive and authoritarian government, and has thus far been sustained via the forced obedience of the rebellious
Districts, the brainwashing and conditioning of Districts 1 and 2, and the conditioning of the residents of its Capitol. The movie has a variety of

The reason why is hope. Hope is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective...a lot of hope is dangerous. A spark is fine, so long as it
is contained." (Hunger Games) With this statement, President Snow reveals the overall scheme of the government, in how they use the Hunger
Games to keep the Districts in line. They use the Games to punish the Districts, and make them fall into line, but at the same time, they use the
Games to give the people in the Districts a false sense of hope. Because the Games have a winner, each District has the faint hope that someone they
send might win, thus investing them in the contest, and giving them incentive to care about who wins and who loses. And if a District does have a
winner, that winner and the District are given the chance for many rewards and opportunity for advancements and improvements. The winner of the
Hunger Games will become a celebrity overnight, and would be able to use his or her power to help improve the conditions of their District, if they so
chose. So with the Games giving the Districts this hope, a hope of a reward or a better chance, the government of Panem is able to keep the rebellious
Districts in line, with minimum fuss. A perfect, if devious, combination of punishment and reward. However, the Capitol hasn't stopped there in its
plans to subjugate the Districts with the Games. It goes beyond that.

The film The Hunger Games Essay
The film The Hunger Games, released in 2012 and based off the first book of a literary trilogy, has become a source of entertainment and intrigue
among many Americans. Featuring a futuristic and dystopian United States, it has captured the imagination for some and kindled a intense obsession
for others. While on the surface this movie might seem to simply be a story with a riveting plot line about young love, vicious combat, and survival,
it is much more than that. As most films do, if one takes a closer look, The Hunger Games gives rise to multiple sociological patterns and themes. If
one observes with an informed and critical eye, sociological issues that are embedded in the film are revealed. From this, one can draw cultural and

Although this could be seen as a result of the context in which these characters find themselves, this proclamation by Katniss sheds light on the
possibility that she thinks there could be more to life than just having kids. However, this statement could also be enforcing social norms. Katniss,
who is presumably supposed to want kids as a woman in this story's society, might be stating that, although she wants to have kids, cannot do so.
This could be a result of the fact that she does not feel that she could properly care for them, or that her world in which she lives is not fit to be the
home of her potential offspring. Another instance in which Katniss's character challenges gender roles is when Katniss finds the wounded, suffering
Peeta and saves his life. This goes against the typical concept of a male being the stronger, more protective of the two sexes. When Peeta suggests that
Katniss needs to look out for herself, Katniss utterly dismisses the thought: "No, I'm not gonna leave you. I'm not gonna do that." Instead of Peeta
riding in on a horse in shining knight's armor, he is portrayed to be weak and vulnerable, dependent on Katniss's cunning and skill to save him. Within
this situation, female gender roles are also enforced. Along with coming to Peeta's rescue, Katniss

The book The Hunger Games, portrays a society where people are treated unfairly based on factors that they cannot control. The people are born
into one of 13 districts. There lives vary drastically based on where they are born. Someone born in the Capitol has a completely different life than
someone born in district 12. A person born in the Capitol lives a wealthy life and is always treated with respect. On the other hand someone born in
district 12 has a life of constant back breaking work. They live in poverty and struggle to survive.
In the book The Hunger Games, the social class system set up by the Capitol causes people to be treated very unfairly based on where they are born.

Katniss and Peeta have to work even harder to overcome the bias against them and win the hearts of the sponsors and the crowd. Being as poor as
they are comes with some benefits and some disadvantages. They have been under fed most of their lives which means they are skinny and weak
compared to the other tributes. Living in district 12 also gives them the natural sense of survival. Katniss spends a lot of time hunting to survive
which is basically what the hunger games are. Peeta also uses skills from his trade, like his cake decorating, to give him an upper hand in the games.
Just like in their everyday lives Katniss and Peeta are spending every waking moment during the games fighting to survive. Because of the social class
system set up by the Capitol people are treated very unfairly based on where they were born.
The time that Suzanne Collins lived in when she was writing this book had a heavy effect on the plot of the book. It was from watching tv when the
concept of the hunger games came to her. She was surfing the channels and saw a reality tv show where people were competing to stay in the game
and a footage from the invasion of Iraq. The two concepts mixed in her mind and led her to the hunger games. She published the book in 2008
which was a time when reality shows, like Survivor, were very popular. If the reader approaches this book thinking of it as a reality tv show, a lot of
the same themes arise.

When children are forced to grow up fast at a young age due to traumatic events, it shapes them into fighters, when faced with life and death a person
would do almost anything to assure survival. This is greatly demonstrated in the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins when the main
character Katniss Everdeen's world is shifted upside down when her father dies and when she volunteers as tribute for the Hunger Games. After her
father's death the weight of the world was on Katniss's shoulders, as she had to learn how to provide for, and keep her family alive. Her family

Lastly, Katniss volunteered to take her sisters place in the hunger games when Prim's name was pulled at the reaping. She could not stand the
thought of her sister being thrown into such an awful situation and she did the only thing she could to save her life. Fighting for others when they
were too weak to fight for themselves was another characteristic that Katniss demonstrated throughout the novel. This was displayed in many cases.
One way in which this was portrayed was when Katniss immediately without giving a thought to the matter decided to enroll herself in the hunger
games in order to ensure Prim's safety as well as to save her the terror of the despicable games. "With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. I
volunteer! I gasped. I volunteer as tribute!"(Collins 22). This showed how Katniss stood up for her sister and fought for her when no one else
would, she saved Prim's life and she risked it all for her. Katniss also took care of and risked much for Peeta when he was injured. As soon as it was
announced that two people could win the hunger games if they were from the same district Katniss immediately made it her priority to find Peeta. She
wanted to do everything in her power to assure his survival. When Katniss did find Peeta he was badly injured and she spent much time and effort in
making him better. At one point she even risked her own life to obtain medicine that would

Throughout the novel you can see her other acts of care, such as when she takes 12 year old Rue under her wing in the middle of the games, and
also how she refuses to leave Peeta when he is injured. "I can almost hear Haymitch groaning as I team up with this wispy child. But I want her.
Because she's a survivor, and I trust her, and why not admit it? She reminds me of Prim" (pg 201). In this quote the author Suzanne Collins is showing
that Katniss is teaming up with Rue, rather than killing her, which is what would get her farther in the Games but she doesn't because she reminds her
of Prim, and wants to protect her. During the weeks over which the Games occur, Katniss' character does not essentially change. What changes are her
circumstances, and most of the novel watches her dealing with the situations she encounters. She does not begin to seek attention once she becomes a
celebrity and begins doing television interviews. Rather, she always tries to figure out how to get through the interviews so she can succeed in winning
the games and go back to her life. The games do not turn her into an unsympathetic killer, and the only times she does kill, she does only because it was
necessary. That her sense of compassion remains intact is clear through the way she treats Rue and kills Cato out of pity for his

Power In The Hunger Games Essay
Power can easily be used for negative purposes, however is difficult to utilize it in a positive nature. Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games explores
re–humanization to resist the capitol's negative power. Negative power is being explored in Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut to control the
public's abilities. Positive power is having the courage to resist something that oppresses. Doing something positive with power is hard, doing
something negative with power is easy.
In Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games the resistance is taking the form of re–humanising the people of Panem. The dehumanisation of the Panem over

With the courage to replacing her sister in a public execution, Katniss gives people the power to take back their lives. The motif of appearance in 'I

The film is set up with a sense of mystery surrounding Cinna's character, which will most likely be developed more as the book series continues.
Another difference in the novel that's significant is the Mockingjay pin that is given to Katniss by Madge, the Governor's daughter once it's known
that Katniss will be participating in the Hunger Games. Madge is described as one of the few people that Katniss is semi–friendly with; otherwise she
is described as a loner who only has time to do what she has to do to take care of her family. This comes as a surprise to Katniss, who had assumed
that Madge disliked her. This is an important piece of the book because in the movie, Katniss finds the same Mockingjay pin at the local flea
market, and it is given to her by the owner, a woman named Greasy Sae. The significance of the pin is never explained in the movie, and viewers
are left wondering if it will play an important role later on in the film. The director and author make many subtle, yet evident changes between the
novel and film, which can only be noticed if one reads the novel and views the movie. However, those that have are left questioning why the changes
were made, and what to expect next. As described in the book, each pair of Tributes is provided with a mentor who has won the Hunger Games in the

most of all, I see her in my sister, Prim." When Rue died Katniss lay flowers around her body, this could be taken as a sign of rebellion as the
tributes are not meant to mourn the dead in the games and giving Rue a funeral was not something that the Capitol wanted her to do. Later when a
new rule is introduced saying that there can be two victors from one district Katniss begins to think that maybe both she and Peeta can survive.
Katniss begins to pretend to be in love with Peeta to put on a show to please the audience although she does care for him as she risks her life to get
the bag to save his life. towards the end of the games, Katniss shoots Cato with an arrow to end his life in doing so she ended the games and denying
the people a show and cementing the fact that she is becoming a

The Hunger Games Research Essay
In The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins expresses two themes. The first one is that we can't let the government use their power to treat, and use
people like they want, they are oppressing them. "At one o'clock, we head of the square. Attendance is mandatory unless you are on deaths door.
This evening, officials will come around and check to see if this is the case. If not you will be imprisoned." (Collins, 16) we can see that the Capitol
forces the people to participate in the reaping by threatening them. "When I was younger, I scared my mother to death, the things I would blurt out
about District 12, about the people who rule our country, Panem, from the far–off city called the Capitol. Eventually I understood this would only lead

During the game Katniss have to pretend that she loves Peeta, but inside she knows that her real love was Gale and that he was waiting for her. It
was hard for all of them because Gale was outside seeing how Peeta kiss his girlfriend, and for Peeta because he knows that Katniss was in love
with another boy and not of him, and to Katniss because maybe she was with Gale, but passing time with Peeta and look how he tries to saved her
life make her get confused about her feelings so she focused in what is good for her, and not of what she real want.
The author communicates the important message by using some literary devices, for example she used verbal irony when Peeta say, "Always worried
about our safety." (Collins, 81) It was sarcastic because he was talking with Katniss about what happens if they try to suicide from the top of the
building, but they can't because the Capitol want them to be alive for the game.
The Hunger Games deal with oppression by many ways. "It's time for the drawing. Effie Trinket says as she always does, "Ladies first!" and crosses to
the glass ball with the girls' names. She reaches in, digs her hand deep into the ball, and pulls out a slip of paper." (Collins, 28) The government
oppresses the people of the Seam because they were condemned to play the Hunger Games every year to get some food to live. People suffer because

Theme Of Heroism In The Hunger Games

  • 1. Theme Of Heroism In The Hunger Games In the book The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins emphasizes the heroic qualities of the characters. The book is set in a dystopian society where one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts are forced into an arena and need to fight for their life. In the paragraphs below I will be discussing 6 of the many ways the author has depicted the heroic qualities of the characters Katniss, Thresh, and Peeta. These protagonist characters demonstrate the qualities, heroism, love, strong willed, bravery, respect, affection, and, determination. Thresh is a hero as this is a sign of thanks and respect. Katniss shows her persistence to win the game from the very start of the book to the very end. On page 205 Katniss quotes " Every step is an effort but I refuse to stop. " this shows how pushes even though she will face obstacles. Katniss signifies Strength and dedication as she is not only doing this for her but also for Prim and Rue. The Technique used is persistence. The reason why Katniss is a hero she strives toward her goal and never gives up. Katniss is an inspiration to many people as she has the qualities of a hero. Katniss uses this quote to keep her determined to win and to have a better life in District twelve. Another heroic quality of Katniss is affection, love and determination. She shows these qualities through the quote " you're not going to die." " I forbid it." Katniss uses the technique of dialogue and description. The effect that it has on us ( the reader ) is how she shows her love and generosity towards Peeta. Katniss is determined to keep Peeta alive and has the urge to win. • 2. Essay On The Hunger Games The Hunger Games – Essay By Lauren Wheeler Throughout the whole story of The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins' personal story plays a major role in the events of the annual hunger games, and is a great influence on the personality and development of the two tributes from District 12 and their struggle to survive in the cruel, harsh arena. The story of the Hunger Games takes place in the destroyed nation of North America, which is now Panem and contains twelve districts. These districts are ruled by the intimidating Capitol. The Hunger Games was created after the districts of Panem had tried to rebel against the Capitol ultimately failing in the end. As punishment, each district would have to choose 2 tributes, one female and ...show more content... The girl, whose name is Rue and Katniss decide to team up and work together to destroy the food stash of the stronger tributes called Careers, which have also teamed up together. After successfully working out a plan, Katniss destroys the Careers food stash and runs to the area where Rue and her have agreed to meet back up. On the way back, she witnesses Rue's death at the hands of a Career. In order to survive, she decides to run even further out into the woods hoping to find a way to survive. While she's running, the Capitol then announced that both tributes from the same district can win together. After this she finds Peeta, lying in the mud covered in leaves and sticks in an attempt to be camouflaged so none of the tributes could find him. Katniss helps Peeta wash off and tends to a big cut on his leg which was given to him by one of the Careers. For the next few days, the two hide in a cave allowing each other to rest and show one another love and affection, ultimately hoping to win over the Capitol. After Peeta is knocked out by medication, Katniss makes the trek to the cornucopia where the Capitol is hosting what they call a feast, but it is actually just a way to get all the remaining tributes to fight one another. After surviving a near death experience, Katniss makes her way back to the cave. When she returns, Peeta is somewhat healed and they both make the long hike together to the cornucopia. Once they arrive, they see Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Thematic Essay On The Hunger Games Hunger Games– Thematic Analysis The Hunger Games is a 2008 top selling science fiction novel by the American writer Suzanne Collins. Set in the dystopian, post–apocalyptic nation of Panem, Suzanna Collins deals with many issues that each play vital roles in the novel, such as the inequality between the rich and poor and the importance of appearances. The inequality between the rich and poor is an integral theme highlighted by Suzanne Collins in the Hunger Games series. In Panem, wealth and power are dominated by those living in the Capitol, and, as a result, there is a substantial imbalance between the lives of the affluent and that of the poor. Throughout the novel, Katniss uses her physical appearance and her actions to manipulate how other citizens viewed her. For instance, during the reaping ceremony (the place where the candidates of each district were picked for the 'games'), Katniss doesn't allow herself to cry in front of the camera because she doesn't want to appear weak and incapable (thus a much easier target). Furthermore, at the opening ceremony of the 'games', Collins places a lot of emphasis on Katniss ornate dress and ostentatious appearance, showing readers the significance physical appearance. Standing out from the rest and hence trading attention has proved to be much more than just an egotistic attempt to gain recognition. Popular tributes are able to attract sponsors who could provide items to those candidates during the games which prove to be vital to their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Identity and reality are both often skewed and/or compromised to meet the needs and wants of a person or platform. More often than not do people and markets put on fronts to be perceived in a certain way to gain favor in the public eye. They adapt because they have to in order to stay afloat in the ever changing world of fleeting beauty and immediate gratification. The world of Panem in The Hunger Games is not much different, in fact, it's more similar than not. In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Collins uses construction and manipulation of the authenticity of the characters to show that identity evolves to fit the demands of the prevailing reality. Much of the Hunger Games is centered around portraying a certain image, or identity if you will. The capital manipulates the weaknesses in their society and in their people to create an identity of unity and nationalism through the way they present the games to the districts of Panem. This idea of appearing to be one thing but really being another is ingrained in the society of Panem. District 12, in particular, maintains this image of complacency for the sake of survival, and Katniss is no exception to this. To survive, Katniss practices stoicism where she manipulates her emotions to create the identity she needs. She has become accustom to this way of living, camouflaging her actions and concealing her true emotions to protect not only herself but also the ones she loves (Prim in this instance). She is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Essay The Hunger Games novel written by Suzanne Collins reflects significant issues in the reality world nowadays which relate to the humanity, the poverty, the violence,... It describes the issues through the characters and what happens in the story, and the most significant issue occurs throughout the novel is the gap between rich and poor people. In the beginning of the novel, Suzanne Collins describes clearly the scene of the poverty, the terrible fear of the 12–district's villagers, in contrast to the wealthy of the Capitol's citizens. The inequality of social classes becomes the theme of the novel because of its relation and the effects to the plots of the story. And the reason, which leads to that issue, is the policies of the dictatorship...show more content... Children in District 12 have no chances for education and have to work as an adult in order to feed their family. Katniss has to hunt illegally and even risk her life to get into the forest to find food for her family (Sparknotes, n.d.). Some other villagers are not able to hunt so that means Katniss's family is luckier than many other families in the same district (Sparknotes, n.d.). When she is in the Capitol, the meal, which she is having, makes her remember about the basic meal at home. "Chicken and chunks of oranges cooked in a creamy sauce laid on a bed of pearly white grain, tiny green peas and onions, rolls shaped like flowers, and for dessert, a pudding the color of honey" (Collins, S., 2008, p.79). The luxurious meal shows the significant different in living standard because of the various dishes in the meal in compare with a usual daily bread in District 12. "I try to imagine assembling this meal myself back home" (Collins, S., p.79). At home, Katniss has to hunt for food, but here at the Capitol, people just sit there, wait for the meal is ready to be served. Besides the gap between the Capitol and District 12, the tesserae is the most recognizable system that reflects the inequality of the people in the same district. The tributes are picked randomly but it seems like the poor children have more risk than the rich children. Poor children have to put their name to the reaping Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Argumentative Essay On The Hunger Games The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins delineates that there are times when people believe that all hope is lost but only those who are strong will persevere through their darkest moments. Suzanne Collins portrays the theme throughout the novel with the main protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, as she struggles to endure her daily life and the annual Hunger Games. Collins displays the prodigious amount of persistence of Katniss Everdeen and her comrade, Peeta Mellark, which allows them to survive throughout the Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen lives a life that is based on her ability to survive long before she becomes a participant in the Hunger Games. Katniss and Peeta encountered Cato on the Cornucopia as they escaped from the muttations. "Cato has made a beeline for the Cornucopia, and without question I follow him. If he thinks it's the safest place, who am I to argue? " (Collins 327). Katniss shot an arrow in which Peeta was able to push Cato off of the Cornucopia even though Peeta was bleeding from his leg, which resulted in Cato being attacked by Muttations. Katniss and Peeta are not able to kill each other. The death of Cato leads Katniss and Peeta to kill each other, however because they can not do so, they choose a double suicide in which they end up as the victors of the Hunger Games. "We both know they have to have a victor. Yes, they have to have a victor. Without a victor, the whole thing would blow up in the Gamemakers' faces. They'd have failed the Capitol. Might possibly even be executed, slowly and painfully while the cameras broadcast it to every screen in the country. If Peeta and I were both to die, or they thought we were..." (Collins 339). As they were both about to die they heard "the frantic voice of Claudius Templesmith shouts above them. "Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy–fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark! I give you – the tributes of District Twelve!" (Collins 340). • 7. Theme The book, The Hunger Games, has one main theme throughout. Suffering and brutality as a form of entertainment. In Panem, a tribute's suffering, physically and mentally, is used and prolonged as a form of entertainment for the people, mostly for those who live in the Capitol. The mind set is that the more the tributes suffer, especially while battling one another, the more entertaining it becomes. At one time Katniss discussed what made the Games successful and what didn't. The successes all had in common that they made it so that the tributes did not die immediately which would limit the entertainment factor. Towards the end of the book, Cato did not die a quick death as he could have, he remained alive. Once the muttations had surrounded Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Katniss portrays a sympathetic and loving emotion during the games once Hamish, her mentor gave her wise words, 'you have to make people like you'. Hamish being a past tribute, who became a victor, knows how the games must be played to win. A mid shot on Katniss's face when told this captures her emotions in a way the lets the audience know the discomfort the news has brought her. Katniss preformed well during the games, and upheld a persona leading up to the games. Together Katniss and Peeta, the male tribute from district 12 forged a fake love for the satisfaction of the government. In a critical moment in the film after Peeta gets injured they use their 'love' to receive medication, A single kiss helped them get the suplies they needed with a note attached reading "you call that a kiss". • 9. Social Control and The Hunger Games Essay The Hunger Games, a film based off of a novel written by Susan Collins, was released in March of 2012. The film, and the book it was based on, chronicles the struggles of a girl named Katniss Everdeen, a girl who lives in a poverty stricken province or "District", until untimely circumstances forces her to play in the Hunger Games, a gladiatorial like contest where children between the ages of 12 and 18 are forced to fight to the death. A contest that was set up by an oppressive and authoritarian government, and has thus far been sustained via the forced obedience of the rebellious Districts, the brainwashing and conditioning of Districts 1 and 2, and the conditioning of the residents of its Capitol. The movie has a variety of messages,...show more content... The reason why is hope. Hope is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective...a lot of hope is dangerous. A spark is fine, so long as it is contained." (Hunger Games) With this statement, President Snow reveals the overall scheme of the government, in how they use the Hunger Games to keep the Districts in line. They use the Games to punish the Districts, and make them fall into line, but at the same time, they use the Games to give the people in the Districts a false sense of hope. Because the Games have a winner, each District has the faint hope that someone they send might win, thus investing them in the contest, and giving them incentive to care about who wins and who loses. And if a District does have a winner, that winner and the District are given the chance for many rewards and opportunity for advancements and improvements. The winner of the Hunger Games will become a celebrity overnight, and would be able to use his or her power to help improve the conditions of their District, if they so chose. So with the Games giving the Districts this hope, a hope of a reward or a better chance, the government of Panem is able to keep the rebellious Districts in line, with minimum fuss. A perfect, if devious, combination of punishment and reward. However, the Capitol hasn't stopped there in its plans to subjugate the Districts with the Games. It goes beyond that. • 10. The film The Hunger Games Essay The film The Hunger Games, released in 2012 and based off the first book of a literary trilogy, has become a source of entertainment and intrigue among many Americans. Featuring a futuristic and dystopian United States, it has captured the imagination for some and kindled a intense obsession for others. While on the surface this movie might seem to simply be a story with a riveting plot line about young love, vicious combat, and survival, it is much more than that. As most films do, if one takes a closer look, The Hunger Games gives rise to multiple sociological patterns and themes. If one observes with an informed and critical eye, sociological issues that are embedded in the film are revealed. From this, one can draw cultural and ...show more content... Although this could be seen as a result of the context in which these characters find themselves, this proclamation by Katniss sheds light on the possibility that she thinks there could be more to life than just having kids. However, this statement could also be enforcing social norms. Katniss, who is presumably supposed to want kids as a woman in this story's society, might be stating that, although she wants to have kids, cannot do so. This could be a result of the fact that she does not feel that she could properly care for them, or that her world in which she lives is not fit to be the home of her potential offspring. Another instance in which Katniss's character challenges gender roles is when Katniss finds the wounded, suffering Peeta and saves his life. This goes against the typical concept of a male being the stronger, more protective of the two sexes. When Peeta suggests that Katniss needs to look out for herself, Katniss utterly dismisses the thought: "No, I'm not gonna leave you. I'm not gonna do that." Instead of Peeta riding in on a horse in shining knight's armor, he is portrayed to be weak and vulnerable, dependent on Katniss's cunning and skill to save him. Within this situation, female gender roles are also enforced. Along with coming to Peeta's rescue, Katniss Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. The Hunger Games Essay The book The Hunger Games, portrays a society where people are treated unfairly based on factors that they cannot control. The people are born into one of 13 districts. There lives vary drastically based on where they are born. Someone born in the Capitol has a completely different life than someone born in district 12. A person born in the Capitol lives a wealthy life and is always treated with respect. On the other hand someone born in district 12 has a life of constant back breaking work. They live in poverty and struggle to survive. In the book The Hunger Games, the social class system set up by the Capitol causes people to be treated very unfairly based on where they are born. The majority of the plot is based around the fact that...show more content... Katniss and Peeta have to work even harder to overcome the bias against them and win the hearts of the sponsors and the crowd. Being as poor as they are comes with some benefits and some disadvantages. They have been under fed most of their lives which means they are skinny and weak compared to the other tributes. Living in district 12 also gives them the natural sense of survival. Katniss spends a lot of time hunting to survive which is basically what the hunger games are. Peeta also uses skills from his trade, like his cake decorating, to give him an upper hand in the games. Just like in their everyday lives Katniss and Peeta are spending every waking moment during the games fighting to survive. Because of the social class system set up by the Capitol people are treated very unfairly based on where they were born. The time that Suzanne Collins lived in when she was writing this book had a heavy effect on the plot of the book. It was from watching tv when the concept of the hunger games came to her. She was surfing the channels and saw a reality tv show where people were competing to stay in the game and a footage from the invasion of Iraq. The two concepts mixed in her mind and led her to the hunger games. She published the book in 2008 which was a time when reality shows, like Survivor, were very popular. If the reader approaches this book thinking of it as a reality tv show, a lot of the same themes arise. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Hunger Games Essay When children are forced to grow up fast at a young age due to traumatic events, it shapes them into fighters, when faced with life and death a person would do almost anything to assure survival. This is greatly demonstrated in the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins when the main character Katniss Everdeen's world is shifted upside down when her father dies and when she volunteers as tribute for the Hunger Games. After her father's death the weight of the world was on Katniss's shoulders, as she had to learn how to provide for, and keep her family alive. Her family consisted of her mother, who suffered severe depression after the death of her husband, and her younger sister Prim who meant the world to her. She inherited hunting...show more content... Lastly, Katniss volunteered to take her sisters place in the hunger games when Prim's name was pulled at the reaping. She could not stand the thought of her sister being thrown into such an awful situation and she did the only thing she could to save her life. Fighting for others when they were too weak to fight for themselves was another characteristic that Katniss demonstrated throughout the novel. This was displayed in many cases. One way in which this was portrayed was when Katniss immediately without giving a thought to the matter decided to enroll herself in the hunger games in order to ensure Prim's safety as well as to save her the terror of the despicable games. "With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. I volunteer! I gasped. I volunteer as tribute!"(Collins 22). This showed how Katniss stood up for her sister and fought for her when no one else would, she saved Prim's life and she risked it all for her. Katniss also took care of and risked much for Peeta when he was injured. As soon as it was announced that two people could win the hunger games if they were from the same district Katniss immediately made it her priority to find Peeta. She wanted to do everything in her power to assure his survival. When Katniss did find Peeta he was badly injured and she spent much time and effort in making him better. At one point she even risked her own life to obtain medicine that would Get more content on HelpWriting.net

"I can almost hear Haymitch groaning as I team up with this wispy child. But I want her. Because she's a survivor, and I trust her, and why not admit it? She reminds me of Prim" (pg 201). In this quote the author Suzanne Collins is showing that Katniss is teaming up with Rue, rather than killing her, which is what would get her farther in the Games but she doesn't because she reminds her of Prim, and wants to protect her. During the weeks over which the Games occur, Katniss' character does not essentially change. What changes are her circumstances, and most of the novel watches her dealing with the situations she encounters. She does not begin to seek attention once she becomes a celebrity and begins doing television interviews. Rather, she always tries to figure out how to get through the interviews so she can succeed in winning the games and go back to her life. The games do not turn her into an unsympathetic killer, and the only times she does kill, she does only because it was necessary. Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games explores re–humanization to resist the capitol's negative power. Negative power is being explored in Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut to control the public's abilities. Positive power is having the courage to resist something that oppresses. Doing something positive with power is hard, doing something negative with power is easy. In Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games the resistance is taking the form of re–humanising the people of Panem. The dehumanisation of the Panem over 74 years has been a direct result of negative power. The emotive language used in "twelve to eighteen year olds are herded into roped...show more content... She is shaken to the core with sacrifice, adversity and danger when she finds herself forced to compete in a televised series of games where there is only one survivor. Not only does she want to live, but she has an incredible sense of responsibility to her family that she's left behind. The film is set up with a sense of mystery surrounding Cinna's character, which will most likely be developed more as the book series continues. Another difference in the novel that's significant is the Mockingjay pin that is given to Katniss by Madge, the Governor's daughter once it's known that Katniss will be participating in the Hunger Games. Madge is described as one of the few people that Katniss is semi–friendly with; otherwise she is described as a loner who only has time to do what she has to do to take care of her family. This comes as a surprise to Katniss, who had assumed that Madge disliked her. This is an important piece of the book because in the movie, Katniss finds the same Mockingjay pin at the local flea market, and it is given to her by the owner, a woman named Greasy Sae. The significance of the pin is never explained in the movie, and viewers are left wondering if it will play an important role later on in the film. The director and author make many subtle, yet evident changes between the novel and film, which can only be noticed if one reads the novel and views the movie. However, those that have are left questioning why the changes were made, and what to expect next. • 19. The Hunger Games Research Essay In The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins expresses two themes. The first one is that we can't let the government use their power to treat, and use people like they want, they are oppressing them. "At one o'clock, we head of the square. Attendance is mandatory unless you are on deaths door. This evening, officials will come around and check to see if this is the case. If not you will be imprisoned." (Collins, 16) we can see that the Capitol forces the people to participate in the reaping by threatening them. The author communicates the important message by using some literary devices, for example she used verbal irony when Peeta say, "Always worried about our safety." (Collins, 81) It was sarcastic because he was talking with Katniss about what happens if they try to suicide from the top of the building, but they can't because the Capitol want them to be alive for the game.
