Caroline Koekkoek is a sales advisor for telecom networks at SPIE who previously worked for a Dutch telecom company. She believes that gender diversity is important at work, with women bringing different skills like better social skills and creativity. To attract more women, SPIE's local women's network is sponsoring the Dutch women's soccer team to show managers that women enjoy sports and can do good work. Koekkoek handles PR for this initiative to promote more gender diversity at SPIE.

1. What is your role at SPIE?
Caroline Koekkoek: I am a sales advisor for telecoms networks. I previously worked
for a Dutch telecoms company. I studied Business Administration at university,
but I did a lot of technical training during my previous professional experience,
so when I sell a contract I know what I’m talking about! SPIE was one of my customers.
When they needed new salespeople last August, they offered me a post.
Does it make any difference that you are a woman?
C.K.: When I sign a big contract, my male colleagues are motivated to do even better
themselves! I believe in gender diversity at work. Women are not as driven by money
as men, so they take more risks and are more innovative. They often have better social
skills and are very creative. A balance of men and women is important. I also believe
in cultural diversity because everyone has something special to contribute.
How can SPIE attract more women?
C.K.: Business unit managers have to realise that they need to take action.
Our local So’SPIE Ladies network is sponsoring the Dutch team in the UEFA Women’s
European Cup, which takes place in Holland in July. I’m handling the PR for the operation.
We hope this will show managers that women are like men – they enjoy sport and can be
trusted to do a good job!
