Society and Order
Society = Living together of all human beings
System = The structure of systems, the processes, methods etc.
adopted for the fulfilment of the collective social goal
The word “society” is primarily used in the context of human-human
relationship, while the words “system” and “order” are primarily used for
the processes and methods related to social systems, social order
Society and social systems are interconnected, so they are sometimes
used interchangeably also.
Thus there are two parts of the course:
Part 1 – about human-human relationship, about society
Part 2 – about societal systems, societal order
Human society, order = A society, social order in which there is a
possibility, provision and opportunity for every human being to live with
fulfilment in continuity.

Steps for Transition and Need of Coordination of Efforts
 Need for stepwise effort in areas in which there is need for change –
need to recognise where change is required so that effort can be
made in these areas
 Collective effort is essential for the change and effective functioning of
a human society, order. Individual effort can merely initiate societal
changes
 Thus, there is a need for proper coordination amongst people who are
thinking, making effort for societal changes

What we are trying to understand through this course
1.What is the human goal? Where do we want to reach as a society, a
societal order?
2.What are the systems, dimensions required for realising the human
goal? E.g. What is essential, what needs to be done in the education
system, in production, in the justice system etc.?
3.What part is working and what is not can be identified by way of a
critical appraisal of the present state
4.What would be the steps for ensuring harmony in the parts which are
not working? It is desirable and essential to have an idea of at least the
first few steps so that at least we start the process
5.It is also essential to have proper coordination between the people who
have made, or are making effort in this direction (so that together we
can progress towards the common goal), It is necessary to keep in mind
that society and societal order are collective achievements and
collective effort is required for them
