Filtration is any of various mechanical,
physical or biological operations that
separate solids from fluids (liquids
or gases) by adding a medium through
which only the fluid can pass.

The surface upon which solids are deposited
in a filter is called the “filter medium”.
Properties of ideal filter medium:-
It should-
Be capable of delivering a clear filtrate at a
suitable production rate.
Filter even negligible amount.
Be inert.
Not absorb dissolved materials.
Sterile filtration impose a special
requirement since the pore size must not
exceed the dimensions of bacteria or spores.
