Highlights
1. Making the data warehouse to deliver
A NSW State Government entity engaged an accounting/consulting firm to develop
a data warehouse to produce monthly financial performance reports for its
managers (approx. 1,000 managers) of various divisions situated across NSW.
After 4 months of going live it was suspended as it
contained multiple errors
was late in producing the reports
When I was recruited by this entity these reports were 8 months overdue. The CFO
of the entity took me through a half day work shop to explain the source system
and what was required in the reports.
From this workshop and by analyzing the existing reports with the help of a
Business Analyst, I drew up specific requirements. These were discussed with CFO
to form a basis for phased development. Upon signoff, I developed a number of
new SSIS packages to perform the required transformations and redesigned the
data warehouse model. After 3 months of development and testing, monthly
report generation and distribution resumed in Nov 2015. Since then all managers
receive their financial performance reports within 3 days of GL closing.
This continued delivery of accurate reports has resulted in more requirements for
BI solutions. Currently I am working as Technical Lead in designing an enterprise
data warehouse to serve this NSW State Government entity.
Software products/components used: SAP ByDesign and SAP ECC as source systems, MS SQL
Server 2012 & SSIS for database and integration, SAP BusinessObjects Crystal & Web Intelligence
for reporting and universe design.
2. Financial Management Info on time, every time
Client’s finance data warehouse designed and developed by a third party suffered
the following:
Poor data quality
Unacceptable duration for daily incremental load from source systems
Frequent failure of ETL processing.

Result: Business did not have latest financial info at the start of the business day.
I was part of a two member team tasked by the client to rectify the situation. In
my role I analyzed data quality issues. I re-designed and developed a number of
transformation routines to eliminate data quality issues and incorporated error
handling routines. The project was completed in two months and went live in May
2013.
Since going live, no data quality issue has been reported and ETL processes now
complete in 6 hours compared to 14 hours before. And there has been no ETL
failure since then as all data error events are handled gracefully.
Software products/components used: PeopleSoft as source system, Oracle for database, IBM
Cognos Data Manager for ETL, Cognos Framework Manager for models and Cognos Report Studio
for reporting.
3. Data warehouse solution for Telecom Expense Management
Client’s business is to lease office space for large corporations in multiple locations
in US. Major pain point of the business was the duration it took to re-bill the
telecom expenses to the lessees. It was taking nearly 4 months to re-bill. Attempts
were made to build a solution but it could not support loading data from multiple
source systems within an acceptable time frame. I was part of a 2 member team
to investigate and propose an alternate solution. The team undertook a study of
the solution being built. My role was to review the data loading process and the
database model with the aim of improving the load performance.
The team concluded technology components used in building the solution were not
designed for loading large volumes of data. Furthermore it did not have a facility
to incorporate any logic processing in generating re-billed invoices.
A data warehouse based solution was conceptualized as an alternative and a
prototype was built from ground up within 4 weeks. This prototype solution was
demonstrated the solution to the client to initiate a project. It was initiated upon
successful review and sign off by the client to become a fully fledged solution.
Software products/components used: Various CDR databases as source, IBM DB2 as database, IBM
DataStage for ETL, IBM Cognos Dynamic Cubes Designer and Report Studio for DMR modeling and
reporting
