1. CONCEPT
site and historical analysis findings
* have been a place for different historical occassions (shows TRANSFORMATION)
**period of ethio-italian war
**after the war the school was only for richs
*the architectural evolution in different regimes
**the FLEXIBILITY of the site & TRANSFORMATION through time.
*a place where different people came out from
**shows DIVERSITY (plus how the buildings are diversified on the site but not on
a disturbing way).
*effect of the symmetry, balance calmness(also by nature), no leveled buildings, color
combination
**describes to what purpose the school was built(OVER ALL ARCHITECTURAL
STYLE.
2. we took some words from our findings to generate our concept from our findings:
*transformation
*flexibility
*diversity and
*overall architectural style
we can see the overall architectural style when it transformed in different regimes and
was still adaptable of the architectural style and function given to it. so when we finally
generalize our concept will be TRANSFORMING BY KEEPING THE NATURE. with these
concept we are going to create:
1. with roofs and columns different from the historical buildings but same
materials to create pavilions for different purposes with the same room
height as the balabat building.
2. new G+1 structure with the same architectural style but different materials.
we will describe them more in detail on the functional zoning part with more
illustrations.
3. FUNCTIONAL ZONING
• We have some findings here too
* even though the school was founded for poors and orphans to learn handcraft and give
woman an opportunity to learn; there were also boy scout trainers. so the led us to bring
back those first courses as an additional functions to the existing functions.
* as our site is very wide the students doesn’t have any gathering spaces for any reasons.
• So the programs we have are:
* two pavilions for different purposes like:
**outdoor handcraft making + gathering spaces
**exhibition area for their works
**public event
**boy scout training
* new G+1 structure with the same architectural style but different materials with functions:
**ground floor for hydroponic farming: to show the transformation and flexibility by
knowledge. in addition bringing new technologies; as it is the first school
to teach handcraft now make it the first to practice hydroponic farming.
**first floor for indoor handcraft making space
• We made the boy scout outdoor because it is practical which needs visual attraction and made one of the
handcraft developing area outdoor and one indoor is because some privacy and some need comunicating to
develop such things.
