Series 2, Episode 5
Firstly, at the beginning of the programme it starts off by a male and a female running
through the streets when a car skidding stops and a group of young lads come out. When
they all come to a halt, to show all their facial expressions they used close ups to show the
emotion. They use this again when they both look at each other after saying ‘what shall we
do?’. For this bit, they have shown the real friendship between the two people as the lady
tells him what he needs to do and he understood it which shows that bond. The camera
turns to all the cast at the beginning to show the audience who is there and what they are
doing whilst the two main characters still look at each other.
There were a lot of sounds within this episode such as, keys jingling, water boiling in the
pan, door knocks, shouting noises, background music in the club.
Spaced is set in Camden, London and the first episode aired 24 September 1999 and the
last episode was 13 April 2001. Also, this programme won the British Comedy Award for the
Best TV Comedy Actress and MORE. Edgar Wright, the director has also produced Hot
Fuzz (2007), The World’s End (2013), The Adventures of Tintin (2011). He has worked with
the two famous actors, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in various films and programmes which
have all been a hit. I think the target audience would be 18-20+ for both genders. There is a
lot of humour and different references in there which the younger audience may not
understand.
One of the references in this episode is Jurassic Park the guy in the leather jacket is looking
at the main drug lad and the guy in leather turns around and sees the group of lads standing
there and beat him up whilst the main druggie watches him smoking.
Secondly, to show what was going to happen throughout their night they have used flash
forwards. The first one showed it in photographs of the places they were going to go to. The
next showed little sketches. This shows a clear difference in the character’s thoughts.
Personally, I think this episode of Spaced was amusing to watch, it kept myself entertained
and laughing throughout the whole episode. There were key moments such as the dog
eating the stew at the end which had ‘grass’ in instead of oregano that the lads had and
started smoking it.
When the main character, Tim, went to the toilet in the club. His friend started speaking to a
‘mate’ of his back from the army who stole his girlfriend. However, when the camera was on
the ‘mate’ the music turned eerie as to say ‘he’s the bad guy’.
Thirdly, this episode was cyclical, the positive side of doing that is it creates interest for the
audience to see what happens at the end. The way they looked at each other and the
camera pointing at certain direction it made it seem rude, however it wasn’t which creates
more interest for the audience. It was actually a fake gun fight using their fingers and noises
from their mouth. At this point, they used a violin to show the sadness for a tragic battle.
