EUROPEAN AIRLINE TRAFFIC IN MAY, PRELIMINARY RESULTS FOR JUNE
Air Malta
The Association of European Airlines has released traffic and capacity data for its
Alitalia
members in May 2010, along with a projection for June.
Austrian
The May figures continued to be somewhat affected by the Icelandic volcanic eruption as
bmi
localised airspace closures were imposed in the UK, Ireland and parts of Portugal, Spain,
British Airways Southern France and Northern Italy. In all, the number of flights cancelled was about
10,000 – one-tenth the figure for the extended closures in April.
brussels airlines
Cargolux Overall passenger traffic (RPK) was up 4.3% over May 2009, which at -8.2% had been
one of the most deeply-depressed periods of the 2008-9 downturn.
Croatia Airlines
Cyprus Airways Neither European nor transatlantic traffic contributed substantially to the May 2010
Czech Airlines
increase although Far Eastern volume, at plus 5.5%, grew at above the average rate.
Only Europe-Caribbean and Latin American routes significantly bucked the trend, with
DHL double-digit increases.
Finnair
The traffic increase was accommodated within a 0.2% increase in capacity, leading to
Iberia
substantially improved load factors. The overall figure, of 76.2%, was 3.1 percentage
Icelandair points up on May 2010. Longhaul load factor reached 80.3%, the first time that a May
result has exceeded 80%.
Jat Airways
KLM Airfreight volume grew by 17.3%, the highest monthly increase for more than 15 years,
although measured against the near-collapse of the airfreight market during the
LOT
recession.
Lufthansa
The outlook for June, derived from weekly data, indicates a passenger market growth of
Luxair
about 8%, driven largely by Far Eastern traffic. Should it be confirmed by the final
Malev monthly data, this would be the first sign that the sector has recovered to pre-recession
levels.

Freight traffic is measured in TFTK (Total Freight Tonne-Kms) on passenger and all-cargo services, excluding mail.
Growth rates have been adjusted for changes in membership.
Introduced in 2004, new route area Total Europe includes 'international' or Cross-border Europe services and Domestic services.
(x) Longhaul region 'Other' is not shown above, but is included in the total. 08/07/2010
