2. DEFINITION
• Maintaining the internal climate of buildings and structures while minimizing the
ecological footprint as well as reducing power consumption has always been a very
important part of architectural engineering.
• To achieve this goal of climate control an important technique being used
extensively, especially useful in areas with relatively large temperature difference
between days and nights
• and in relation to buildings and structures constructed of material with high specific
heat capacity such as bricks masonry and concrete, is called Night Flushing.
3. • For night flush ventilation to work,
the building should be completely
closed up during the day.
• That is, the windows and doors
should be closed and the curtains
or other window treatments
drawn.
• This stops the building from
suffering from excess solar
gains.
• Too much solar gain means that
it is harder to cool down the
building using natural means
such as night flush ventilation.
• In many cases, you are able
to direct the flow of the air
caused by night flush
ventilation, and so you should
try and ensure that the cool
air flows over the thermal
mass as much as possible.
HOW DOES NIGHT FLUSH VENTILATION WORKS?
4. circulation
• Night Flushing is an interesting
use of natural ventilation.
• By using the
natural cooling effect of
the night and the cooler air
at night.
• simply allowing the cool night air
to circulate a structure during the
night allows the loss of the heat
buildup, or heat mass gathered
by the structure during the day.
5. FLUSHING HEAT OUT
• Night flush ventilation works best in areas where there are significant differences between
day time and night time temperatures.
• This is because the cooler night time is able to remove the heat from the building.
• Because you are cooling the thermal mass of your home or building overnight, it will not
have as much retained heat, and you are in effect starting with a blank slate the next day,
so you will not have to rely anywhere near as heavily on your air conditioner.
7. OTHER WAYS OF NIGHT FLUSH
• Night flushing cannot always be done via natural ventilation, or not always
natural ventilation can guarantee the desired air change volume, because it is
strongly dependent on wind speed, temperature gradient between indoor and
outdoor temperatures and so on.
• When night flushing is done via mechanical ventilation the energy used by the
fans shall be taken into account. Furthermore, also the energy used by the fans
at daytime shall be considered for completeness.
• With night cooling, night ventilation cools the mass of the building.
