2. About HSBC
HSBC was born from one simple idea – a local bank serving
international needs. In March 1865, HSBC opened its doors for
business in Hong Kong. Today we serve around 38 million
customers in 67 countries and territories.

5. HSBC in India
The Mercantile Bank of India, London and China was founded in Bombay
(now Mumbai).
In 1950 it moved into its new head office building at Flora Fountain in
Mumbai.
The Mercantile Bank was bought in 1959 by The Hongkong and Shanghai
Banking Corporation Limited.
Founded in 1865 to serve the needs of the merchants of the China coast and
finance the growing trade between China, Europe and the US, HSBC has
been an international bank from its earliest days.
HSBC in India has been active in the development of the Indian banking
industry - even giving India its first ATM in 1987.
6. Corporate Social
Responsibility Policy
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd., India is committed to
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and demonstrates this by contributing to
the economic and social development of the communities and safeguarding the
environment.
The bank's community investments (CI) are focused on two core themes:
1. Promoting Education

9. Selection of beneficiary projects and organisations
The Executive Committee (EXCO) of the bank is responsible for the
development and funding of programmes/projects/activities - that
support communities in which they operate/
The bank will undertake such CSR programmes/projects/activities as
approved by the EXCO and as recommended by the CSR Committee of
the EXCO.
The EXCO should approve the following:
1.Annual budget for CSR activities
2.List of CSR activities, modalities of execution and implementation
schedules
3.Monitoring process of such CSR activities
10. Launched in 2012 with a commitment of USD100 million over five years, the
global HSBC Water Programme is a partnership with three non-
governmental organisations – WWF, WaterAid and Earthwatch. The
programme aims to improve water resource management in 10 key river
basins and to provide access to safe water and sanitation to millions of
people.
