CLUTCH
A clutch is a mechanical device that engages
and disengages power transmission, especially
from a drive shaft (driving shaft) to a driven
shaft. In the simplest application, clutches
connect and disconnect two rotating shafts
(drive shafts or line shafts). In these devices,
one shaft is typically attached to an engine and
other to power unit (the driving member),
while the other shaft (the driven member)
provides output power for work. Typically the
motions involved are rotary, but linear clutches
also exist.

• Torque Rating: The maximum torque rating for the clutch should equal or
exceed the application's requirement.
• Power: The maximum power rating for the clutch.
• Speed: The maximum rotary speed rating. This specification applies only
to rotary clutches.
• Shaft Configuration: Clutch may be mounted in-line, parallel, or right
angle.
• Drive/Load Connection:
• In-line Shafts: The drive and the load have shafts that attach to a through-bore.
• Through Shaft: The drive shaft attaches to a bore and the load is driven
through the outer diameter.
• Shaft Pulley/Gear/Sprocket: The drive shaft attaches to a bore and the output
is a drive component such as a pulley, gear, or sprocket. These clutches are
often designed to accept different drive components.
• Flange: The clutch is mounted to the object in motion via a flange.

WORKING PRINCIPLE
• When two revolving friction surfaces are
brought into contact and pressed, then they
are united and start to revolve at the same
speed due to the friction force between
them.
• This is the basic principle of a clutch. The
friction between these two surfaces depends
on the area of a surface, the pressure applied
to them and the friction material between
them.
• The driving member of a clutch is the
flywheel mounted on the engine crankshaft
and the driven member is a pressure plate
mounted on the transmission shaft.
• Some friction plates, sometimes known as
clutch plates are kept between these two
members. This whole assembly is known as
the clutch.

FUNCTION
• It can be disengaged. This allows engine
cranking and permits the engine to run
without delivering power to the
transmission.
• While disengaging, it permits the driver
to shift the transmission into various
gear according to operating conditions.
• While engaging, the clutch slips
momentarily. this provides smooth
engagement and lessens the shock on
gears, shaft and other parts of an
automobile.
• While engaging, the clutch transmits
the power to the wheel without
slipping, in ideal condition.

FRICTION CLUTCH
Definition:
A friction clutch is a clutch in which the drive is transmitted by the
friction between surfaces attached to the driving and driven shafts. These
surfaces are lined with cork, asbestos, or other fibrous material.
Advantages:
• Smooth engagement and minimum shock during the engagement.
• Friction clutch can be engaged and disengaged when the machine is
running since they have no jaw or teeth.
• Easy to operate.
• They are capable of transmitting partial power.
• Friction clutch can act as a safety device. They slip when the torque
exceeds a safe value, thus safeguards the machine.
• Frequent engagement and disengagement is possible.
Applications:
Friction clutch found an application where frequent engagement and
disengagement is required. It is also used where power is needed to transfer
to the machines partially or fully loaded. Another typical application is in
automobiles.

SINGLE DISC CLUTCH
Definition:
A single plate clutch has one clutch plate. This clutch works on the
principle of friction. It is the most common type of clutch used in motor
vehicles. The clutch primarily consists of two members, one mounted on
the driving shaft and the other on the driven shaft.
Advantages:
• The working of engagement and disengagement is very smooth in a
single plate clutch.
• Power losses are very less.
• As sufficient surface area is available for heat dissipation in such
clutches, no cooling oil is required. Therefore, single plate clutches
are dry type.
• Single plate clutches have a quick operation and respond fast.
• It makes it easier to change gears than a cone type.
Applications:
Single plate clutches are used where large radial space is available.
e.g. cars, buses, and trucks.

MULTI DISC CLUTCH
Definition:
The multi plate clutch uses multiple clutch plates to make contact
with the engine flywheel to transfer power between the engine shaft and
the transmission shaft. A multi-plate clutch used in automobiles and
machinery where high torque output is required.
Advantages:
• Decrease the weight of the clutch.
• It has a very compact size.
• Increase the amount of torque transmits.
• Decrease the moment of inertia of the clutch.
Applications:
• Multi plate clutches use where compact construction is required,
e.g., scooters, motorcycles, and racing cars.
• The multi-plate clutch use in some heavy commercial vehicles to
transmit high torque.

CONE CLUTCH
Definition:
The cone clutch is a type of friction clutch that has cone-shaped frictional
areas. These types of clutches are commonly used in synchromesh and epicyclic
gearboxes.
Advantages:
• In this clutch the normal force acting on the contact surfaces is larger than the
axial force.
• It can transfer high torque when compared with the plate clutches of the same
size.
• As the mating surfaces are in the shape of a wedge less effort is required to
operate the clutch.
• It creates less noise than other clutch plates.
Applications:
• It used in various manual transmissions as synchronisers.
• They are used in various heavy machines as they can transmit high torque.
• This Clutches are generally used in low peripheral speed applications.
• It is commonly used in power racing boats.
• This clutch are used in racing and rallying vehicles.
• It is used in some automobiles and other combustion engine transmissions.

CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH
Definition:
Centrifugal clutch is a type of clutch that uses centrifugal force to
connect two concentric shafts, with the driving shaft nested inside the
driven shaft.
Advantages:
• It is low in price because of fewer components and simple
construction.
• Easy to operate.
• It doesn’t require any separate control mechanism like clutch pedal
etc.
• It requires less maintenance.
Applications:
• This clutch is used in an automatic transmission system.
• It is used in scooters, mopeds, and go-karts.
• It is used in chainsaws, lawnmowers, textile industries, etc.

  • 2. CLUTCH A clutch is a mechanical device that engages and disengages power transmission, especially from a drive shaft (driving shaft) to a driven shaft. In the simplest application, clutches connect and disconnect two rotating shafts (drive shafts or line shafts). In these devices, one shaft is typically attached to an engine and other to power unit (the driving member), while the other shaft (the driven member) provides output power for work. This specification applies only to rotary clutches. • Shaft Configuration: Clutch may be mounted in-line, parallel, or right angle. • Drive/Load Connection: • In-line Shafts: The drive and the load have shafts that attach to a through-bore. • Through Shaft: The drive shaft attaches to a bore and the load is driven through the outer diameter. • Shaft Pulley/Gear/Sprocket: The drive shaft attaches to a bore and the output is a drive component such as a pulley, gear, or sprocket. Sunday, April 17, 2022 WORKING PRINCIPLE • When two revolving friction surfaces are brought into contact and pressed, then they are united and start to revolve at the same speed due to the friction force between them. • This is the basic principle of a clutch. The friction between these two surfaces depends on the area of a surface, the pressure applied to them and the friction material between them. • The driving member of a clutch is the flywheel mounted on the engine crankshaft and the driven member is a pressure plate mounted on the transmission shaft. • Some friction plates, sometimes known as clutch plates are kept between these two members. This allows engine cranking and permits the engine to run without delivering power to the transmission. • While disengaging, it permits the driver to shift the transmission into various gear according to operating conditions. • While engaging, the clutch slips momentarily. this provides smooth engagement and lessens the shock on gears, shaft and other parts of an automobile. • While engaging, the clutch transmits the power to the wheel without slipping, in ideal condition. Sunday, April 17, 2022 Prepared by: Group 2 7 FRICTION CLUTCH Definition: A friction clutch is a clutch in which the drive is transmitted by the friction between surfaces attached to the driving and driven shafts. These surfaces are lined with cork, asbestos, or other fibrous material. Advantages: • Smooth engagement and minimum shock during the engagement. • Friction clutch can be engaged and disengaged when the machine is running since they have no jaw or teeth. • Easy to operate. • They are capable of transmitting partial power. • Friction clutch can act as a safety device. They slip when the torque exceeds a safe value, thus safeguards the machine. • Frequent engagement and disengagement is possible. Applications: Friction clutch found an application where frequent engagement and disengagement is required. It is also used where power is needed to transfer to the machines partially or fully loaded. Another typical application is in automobiles.

It is the most common type of clutch used in motor vehicles. The clutch primarily consists of two members, one mounted on the driving shaft and the other on the driven shaft. Advantages: • The working of engagement and disengagement is very smooth in a single plate clutch. • Power losses are very less. • As sufficient surface area is available for heat dissipation in such clutches, no cooling oil is required. Therefore, single plate clutches are dry type. • Single plate clutches have a quick operation and respond fast. • It makes it easier to change gears than a cone type. Applications: Single plate clutches are used where large radial space is available. e.g. cars, buses, and trucks.

A multi-plate clutch used in automobiles and machinery where high torque output is required. Advantages: • Decrease the weight of the clutch. • It has a very compact size. • Increase the amount of torque transmits. • Decrease the moment of inertia of the clutch. Applications: • Multi plate clutches use where compact construction is required, e.g., scooters, motorcycles, and racing cars. • The multi-plate clutch use in some heavy commercial vehicles to transmit high torque.

These types of clutches are commonly used in synchromesh and epicyclic gearboxes. Advantages: • In this clutch the normal force acting on the contact surfaces is larger than the axial force. • It can transfer high torque when compared with the plate clutches of the same size. • As the mating surfaces are in the shape of a wedge less effort is required to operate the clutch. • It creates less noise than other clutch plates. Applications: • It used in various manual transmissions as synchronisers. • They are used in various heavy machines as they can transmit high torque. • This Clutches are generally used in low peripheral speed applications. • It is commonly used in power racing boats. • This clutch are used in racing and rallying vehicles. • It is used in some automobiles and other combustion engine transmissions.

Advantages: • It is low in price because of fewer components and simple construction. • Easy to operate. • It doesn’t require any separate control mechanism like clutch pedal etc. • It requires less maintenance. Applications: • This clutch is used in an automatic transmission system. • It is used in scooters, mopeds, and go-karts. • It is used in chainsaws, lawnmowers, textile industries, etc.
