Damian experienced a traumatic birth with significant brain injury.
Doctors gave a poor prognosis for Damian.
He has surprised all the medical professionals with his progress.
He continues to do things he was not expected to do.
His musical ability came out early.
Initially Dad took the lead in Damian’s care. Then Mom took the lead. Now Dad is
leading again.
Damian received services from a very early age: Babies Can’t Wait; Lekotek; CVI;
private PT, speech, and music therapy.
Damian loves computers and does very well with them.
Damian has strong church and family support networks.
What are our hopes for Damian’s inclusion in first grade?
Damian will identify with children without disabilities.
His talents will be cultivated and new ones identified.
He will be able to access things he cannot in a self contained classroom such as
friendships with children without disabilities and more of the general education
curriculum.
The general education students will develop an awareness and knowledge of
children with disabilities as well as friendships.
His placement in the general education classroom will alleviate fears about children
with disabilities and emphasize the positive.
Damian will develop more independence and interdependence.
Damian will learn many things from being in the general education classroom.

What is our plan for including Damian in first grade?
Damian will begin going to first grade on Monday, November
8.
He will go daily from 8:30-9:45 for language arts with
paraprofessional support.
He will go to lunch with first grade from 11:18-11:48 on
Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Friday with OT support.
He will go to calendar and math from 12:30-1:15 on Monday,
Tuesday, and
Wednesday with parapro support.
His teachers will plan as needed before school. Teachers will
use the Resource
Board to assist Damian to access the general education
curriculum.
Peers will also support Damian. A formal “Circle of Friends”
will be developed by the
consultant.
Appropriate integration of assistive technology will be
emphasized.
Materials the class is working on will be provided to parents so
7. they will be aware of
what Damian is doing in first grade.
Daily notes will be kept to monitor progress.
What changes need to be made in Damian’s IEP?
Amount of time in general education classroom will be changed.
Parents will approve
over phone call or personal conversation with teacher.
