Portfolio Construction Forum 2006
1. 5th Annual PortfolioConstruction Conference
Pillars for building better quality
investor portfolios...
If your role includes designing, building or managing investment
portfolios – or you’ve a professional responsibility to understand
how others do – we invite you to the PortfolioConstruction Conference
23 – 24 August 2006 | AJC Convention Centre, Randwick, Sydney
Official Publications:
2. PortfolioConstruction Journal
The quarterly PortfolioConstruction Journal is for those who
are interested in understanding and debating research on
contemporary and emerging portfolio construction
issues. It contains thought-leading analytical papers and
opinions from a range of expert contributors. It stands
alone between the ‘newsy’ positioning of the various trade
publications, and the ‘Greek alphabet’ extreme of the
academic titles. It is not a light read – much of the material
benefits from several readings, so it’s published quarterly.
The Journal is sent on a complimentary basis to selected
portfolio construction decision-makers – Australian dealer
group principals, paraplanners, CFPs, public research house
analysts, fund-of-fund researchers, super fund trustees,
super fund execs, asset consultants and manage-the-manager
portfolio analysts/managers.
PortfolioConstruction.com.au
PortfolioConstruction.com.au is the info and tools ‘hub’
of our service, where our Members can access copies of
the PortfolioConstruction Journal, PortfolioConstruction
Conference proceedings, and specialist tools to
build quality investor portfolios. All our info
and tools are carefully researched and selected by the
PortfolioConstruction Forum team as among the best
available from the plethora in the market. Some tools are
free to members, others are available by subscription only.
Each is conveniently categorised, and complemented by our
regular Portfolio Pickings email.

About PortfolioConstruction Forum...
Presenting leading and emerging info and tools to help those who design, build and manage quality
investment portfolios, PortfolioConstruction Forum has three integrated pillars
3. “Quality and diversity of views was
outstanding.”
“No doubt, this is the best available
conference for those grappling with day-to-
day portfolio construction issues.”
“The conference is genuinely about portfolio
construction and not a guise for product
pushing.”
“This was one of the best and most useful
conferences that I have attended for quite
some time.”
“Like good wine, the Conference gets better
each year! Excellent investment of my time.”
“Best industry conference I have been to. I
didn’t expect to last through two ten-hour
days but it remained interesting throughout.”
“The best conference I have been to. It
provided a very professional overview of the
issues we need to be addressing in portfolios.”
“I found it very enlightening and many of the
speakers gave me plenty of food for thought
on a different level to the usual daily grind.”
and the PortfolioConstruction Conference
“Our independent program will
challenge your thinking about
how to design, manage and
build investor portfolios.”
In an industry awash with conferences, the annual two-day PortfolioConstruction Conference has
earned a reputation as THE investment conference of the year...

4. A singular focus & firm emphasis on substance
The PortfolioConstruction Conference program is focused
solely on contemporary and emerging portfolio construction
issues. It’s a cram-packed, marathon two days with 31
quality sessions and more than 40 carefully selected, local
and international portfolio experts presenting, interspersed
with interactive discussion and Q&A. Our commitment to
quality content has earned us a terrific CPD history:
2005 16.5 points 2004 14.0 points
2003 13.0 points 2002 13.0 points
Neither‘retail’nor‘wholesale’
PortfolioConstruction Conference is for anyone responsible
for designing, building or managing investment portfolios
(or understanding how others do this) – dealer group
principals and researchers, paraplanners, CFPs, investment
advisers, research house analysts and asset consultants,
MTM analysts, and super fund trustees and executives.
A totally independent plenary program
We have a core, independent 13-hour plenary program over
the two days, designed by the PortfolioConstruction Forum’s
specialist, experienced and independent team. We select our
plenary speakers based solely on their portfolio expertise
(not the size of their wallets! None of our plenary speakers
pay to speak). And, rather than accept our presenters’
views at face value, they’re challenged by other portfolio
experts – our Inquisitors – who lead the Q&A time, asking
presenters to clarify points that were not made clearly,
defend implicit assumptions, and clarify how delegates can
actually implement the ideas at hand.
Our unique Due Diligence Forum
Twice a day for 45 minutes each time, we split out into five
concurrent streams – providing a total of 20 “Due Diligence
Forum” sessions. These are designed to cover a wide range of
portfolio construction topics and each delivers on a research
paper developed specifically for Conference by our carefully
selected Conference Partners (organisations we’ve chosen for
their commitment to thought leadership, and innovative,
high quality product solutions). We vet and edit all research
papers to ensure they will genuinely add value to delegates’
portfolio construction knowledge. And then, each day we
have a 45 minute “Best of” timeslot where we repeat the five
Due Diligence Forum sessions rated most highly by delegates
from the ten sessions run that morning – giving you the
opportunity to hear another great session.
Unequalled value for money
Unlike many conferences, we keep our Practitioner Delegate
fee to a very reasonable $595+GST (Early Bird) and our
2005 delegates receive a special $495+GST rate – both rates
include your Conference dinner ticket. Plus, we include 1
year’s subscription to the PortfolioConstruction Journal, and
access to PortfolioConstruction.com.au
Why is it unique?
Neither‘retail’nor‘wholesale’, PortfolioConstruction Conference is like no other conference you’ll
have been to...
5. 10 new features in 2006...
Speaker papers (in advance!)
Our plenary speakers will focus on delivering a paper
developed for Conference (not the Greek alphabet type
– more like what you’re used to seeing in the
PortfolioConstruction Journal). Papers will be available a
week prior to Conference on PortfolioConstruction.com.au
More focus on implementation than ever
All plenary speakers’ papers and presentations will address
how Practitioner Delegates can apply the ideas discussed
in portfolios. Plus, our program includes a one-hour
Implementation Workshop to ensure Delegates take away a
clear understanding of how to apply what’s discussed.
More Q&A time than ever
Our program allows for longer Q&A than ever, to ensure our
Inquisitors and Practitioner Delegates can tease out issues
that have not been addressed adequately by speakers.
Practitioner representatives as Inquisitors
Our 2006 Inquistors’ Panel includes a large dealer group
researcher, a boutique dealer group principal/researcher, an
MTM portfolio analyst, and other types of Practitioners,
working alongside our chief Inquisitor, Tim Farrelly.
Post-Conference Workshop – a taste of BRIC China
We’re hosting a half-day Post-Conference Workshop (Friday
25 August). The focus is on China – see page 14.
Improved plenary venue
We’re back to AJC Convention Centre, but plenary sessions
are in a more comfortable facility within the Centre.
Improved Gizmos
Our interactive Gizmo feedback technology returns, with
updated functionality to provide better instant feedback
during Conference and quicker analysis post Conference.
A sound research focus
The focus of the Due Diligence Forums is on pre-approved
(by us!) and pre-published research papers written by our
Partners. Like ‘normal’ Journal papers, they’re thought-
leading, thought-provoking, research-based analytical pieces.
Papers will be available a week prior to Conference via the
Delegates-only area on PortfolioConstruction.com.au
A‘best of’Due Diligence Forum
Delegates will rate the two Due Diligence Forum sessions
they attend each morning. The five most highly rated each
day will be repeated in a ‘Best of’ timeslot that afternoon.
Conference dinner (Wednesday 23 August)
For the first time, we’re hosting a Conference Dinner. The
aim is to allow Delegates to further with our speakers. Held
at the AJC (no travel required!), it features a particularly
entertaining after-dinner speaker – see page 15.
Why change anything? Because we ask for – and listen to! – feedback from our
Practitioner Delegates as how we can improve the program...

Arguably the most immediately
important of the four BRIC
economies from the perspective
of those building an Australian investor’s portfolio is
China. We’ve asked Xisu to give an insider’s perspective
on China’s key social issues and challenges and the role,
attitudes and likely reactions of China’s leaders...

Ken comes highly recommended
from our US associate, Bob Veres.
In Bob’s words, “Ken is the CIO
of a VERY smart private client

investment challenges and opportunities that one of the
best US investment advisory firms is looking at... what

“I’ve been thinking about... the potential
of the BRIC economies and their impact on
our local economy and market”
One of the greatest influences on
portfolio construction over the
coming years will be the emergence
of the BRIC economies – Brazil, Russia, India and China.
We’ve asked Don to review the BRIC economies, their
medium- to long-term potential relative to other markets,
and impact on the Australian economy and markets.

7. DR STEPHEN WOOD
Portfolio Strategist | Russell Investment Group
“I’vebeenthinkingabout...issuesrelatedto
implementingBRICinaportfolio”
We’ve asked Steve to cover the gamet
of issues related to implementing
BRIC in a portfolio. What value
does BRIC add? Why not just leave
it to your global equity or emerging markets manager?
What allocation is appropriate? What types of portfolios is
a BRIC allocation suitable for? What are the pros and cons
of allocating to BRIC versus to individual BRIC regions?
DrStephenWood conducts research on the economy, capital markets,
portfolio strategies and investor behavior. Prior to joining Russell in 2005,
he was as a senior portfolio strategist with institutional investment clients,
gained significant experience with high net worth clients as vice president
with Fisher Investments’private client group, and was a senior equity
portfolio strategist at Alliance-Bernstein. Before entering financial services ,
he had extensive academic experience and was a professor in the 1990s.

Why it is NOT correct to take the
traditional approach of ignoring
country analysis in favour of a
sector only (thematic) or stock selection only approach,
when designing your global equities portfolios.
