Bilingualism and home language use

2. Bilinguals students have to endure:
- Judgment and prejudice from their peers.
- Have a hard time understanding a
different language.
- The student has to adjust to a new and
different culture.

3. Students should not feel pressured to feel
as if they need to fit in.
Students should be encouraged to still use
their home language and that it is still
important.
Do the parents encourage the student to
learn English and to welcome a new
culture?

4. Teachers should encourage students to
bring anything from their home culture that
will make them feel comfortable in learning
about a new culture.
Teachers can invite parents into the
classroom to make the student feel more
comfortable and for the parents to feel
more comfortable as well.

5.  Ensure that parents and the teachers
have the same goal for the student.
Effective communication between all three
parties: the teacher, parents, and the
student.
Relevant curriculum and Instruction

6. Does the teacher try to make a connection
with the student and parents?
Are parents informed and understand all
school activities?
Can the student communicate effectively in
both languages?
Does the student feel welcomed?
