2. Family literacy event for all families in the elementary
setting
Goals:
â—Ź Promote excitement and importance on reading at home and at school
â—Ź Encourage families to read at home with students
● Strengthen student’s knowledge of cultures and languages
â—Ź Show all students that diversity makes people interesting and special
â—Ź Importance of appreciating other cultures and promote self appreciation of
student’s cultures and identities
3. All families are invited to attend this multicultural
family literacy event
Each culture represented at my school will have a booth/section of the cafeteria/gym.
Example: Our school has students who speak Swahili, find either a family or multiple families to be in
charge of the booth. Decorations, books, facts/pictures on a tri fold, a book reading (optional), small
samples of food (optional), etc.
If there are other cultures present at the school but no one can create a booth, then a classroom teacher
with their classroom can volunteer. For example, I know that there are a couple Korean students at my
school which to some doesn’t seem necessary to have a booth but this can help students learn about
different cultures and see how amazing it is to be of different cultures
4. Korean Literacy Booth
No families voluteered to be in charge of the booth so my third grade class is in charge of this booth
Tri-fold of information
A collection of Korean
children’s books also
Korean-American
books that are in
English
Food sample of Kim
Bop which is what this
book is about!
I would wear a Korean traditional dress to
show that I’m proud of my culture and that
students should be proud of theirs
5. Korean Literacy Booth Continued
I would ask my third graders to find interesting facts about South Korea
We would come together and share what we’ve found and choose what to put onto our booth
Include: Drawings representing the culture, pictures of South Korean landscapes, venn diagram of the
differences between the Korean culture and the American culture, create decorations together, read
books in class of different cultures and ask why it’s important to appreciate and learn about others’
cultures, etc.
6. Relating to the Text
In Reading Specialists and Literacy Coaches in the Real World by MaryEllen Vogt and
Brenda A. Shearer chapter 12 explains how family literacy can help develop literacy and life
skills for all family members.
On page 257 MaryEllen Vogt and Brenda A. Shearer explains how low literacy rates and
poverty are correlated and is an alarming social issue.
Families who encourage reading can help children find success academically.

7. Adult Education and Literacy Act
1) Interactive literacy activities between parent and child
2) Training in parenting activities
3) Literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency
4) Age-appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life
experiences (page 257)
Having literacy nights can encourage parents and their children to read together. Parents can learn
ways to encourage reading skills such as rereading, looking at pictures to support their learning,
comprehension, and reading aloud. As parents seeing how excited their kids are about reading can
spark them to want to read together and have more books at home around.
