In an ever-growing landscape of thousands of virtualization and cloud native projects it can be hard to understand what projects reliably just work. Fortunately for the growing community at CloudStack that is precisely what we (American Cloud) found. ----------------------------------------- The CloudStack Collaboration Conference 2023 took place on 23-24th November. The conference, arranged by a group of volunteers from the Apache CloudStack Community, took place in the voco hotel, in Porte de Clichy, Paris. It hosted over 350 attendees, with 47 speakers holding technical talks, user stories, new features and integrations presentations and more.

4. Openstack & Open Nebula
A young project that is limited without their enterprise support. More
and more this project feels more like a freemium funnel than a true
open source community. Notable feature: Baked in multi-cloud
The 1000 pound gorilla in the room, that will take 10 engineers to build,
deploy and manage OR a large support contract from one of the
maintainers like Red Hat. Feature rich but impossible to manage them
all without a sizable investment and workforce. Best for if you want to
select one component, like Openstack Ironic for BMaaS.

5. Canonical MaaS & Foreman
Originally developed to live at a layer beneath IaaS.
Works great for its intended purpose (MaaS) Trying to
position itself as a “Metal Cloud”. Seems more suited
for private or edge computing.
An IaaS platform to manage metal & VM lifecycle.
Not necessarily a cloud platform but can provision
on a number of them. Aimed more at the “admin”
class of users.

6. A Clear Winner for All Around IaaS: Cloudstack
• By sticking to the core pillars of infrastructure and providing tooling
around them, Cloudstack is easier to deploy, manage, and use than
any other open source IaaS project
• Core feature rich: Compute, K8S, Networking, Storage, multi tenant
• Extensible with plugins: Ceph, Linbit, Tungsten Fabric and more
• Where we see the most room for improvement: Error messages,
user documentation, metal as a service
